This set definitely did not have a peel. I could be mistaken, but I believe Topps Finest and Finest inserts in various other Topps products were the only cards that came with a peel. Generally, I don't recall any Topps Chrome ever having a peel.

I peeled a 96 Kobe Gold Heirs a few years ago. Pretty sure I used tweezers once I got the edge separated a tad. I didnt think it was that bad to do. Maybe I was lucky. It got a 9.5 x3 with 9 centering

Welp, it was only a $15.00 card so I decided to experiment. They definitely have some type of thin peel on them. I got it off in pieces with gorilla tape. Card looks way shinier now and feels like a chrome card on the surface.

Thankfully this one peeled way easier than the Pippen. I might be addicted to peeling now. The cards look so much better.

^^^

Not sure what's going on here but these chrome cards most certainly don't have optional peel. Either you have found a glitch in the matrix or you just peeled off a layer of card you shouldn't have. You seem pleased so that's all that matters.

Should be an interesting experiment in the acceleration/or not of the discoloration process.

By the way, that Scottie Pipp Chrome Topps 40 might just be the best looking pic I've seen of that insert!?

Wow. I'm shocked. I ripped a half dozen boxes of those I'd found at a Sam's Club back when they first came out and had no idea. Some of them are on the cloudy side now so I'll have to take a closer look.

Those two do look great though. You suppose that's on all from those insert sets, or just the refractors?

I think you might be on to something, although to RustyWest's point, I'm not sure it was intended to be removed. But that cloudiness I mentioned sure looks like it could be bubbles under a peel.

I found this duplicate Mutombo I had that I'll try the same thing with the tape. Sorry Deke.

Did you start with a corner or an edge??

I just pulled a Detlef refractor from same set. Has the same cloudy look mentioned above. Will inspect closer later today.

Start with a corner and go slow, if you can't get it all go to the next corner and rinse and repeat. It did come off in pieces for me on the Pippen, not near as easy as peeling the Finest Payton. The Pippen did still have some cloudiness after I got the peel off. I took a microfiber cloth to it and after some wiping it was gone.

Hmmmm.... That it came off in pieces would seem to suggest it wasn't intended to be removed. Not that it won't look a whole lot better, but it sort of begs the question, if you remove a coating that wasn't supposed to be removed, then get it Graded, might it be considered Altered??

Not trying to over-think it, but the rules seem so arbitrary, ya never know.....

Messed around with Detlef. There was definitely a noticeable thin film on the card at the start. Tiny bubbles in a few spots.

Temptation got best of me and carefully tried the duck tape on one corner. The film lifted but ripped apart easily.

So a similar experience to above with needing to perform the peeling in many steps (maybe a dozen). It’s noticeably shinier now but probably minor surface damage from the peeling process. Shine improvement may not come through clear on photos.

I collect GP, but you should be able to find one relatively easy. I think I paid $10.00 on ebay for it recently.

More fun with peeling. I probably won't be peeling anymore of the cards that don't have the protective peel with text on it, but I am glad I found a way to do it safely and easily on these.

Even the non-refractors look so much better with the peel off.

When I was going through my cards I noticed these have a protective peel with text on them too. The card looks way cleaner with it off.
