Maybe the shop owner interpreted your conversation as "Sir, you and others like you are about to get shut down. Cut me a deal on a box of cards and I will bless you with my business before it's too late."

It makes sense because I had a similar experience. I was at my LCS about a year ago looking at the Optic basketball boxes. While doing so we were just talking shop when I mentioned that earlier that same day I was trying to land some Optic basketball from Panini Direct. I mentioned that Panini always sold some product at MSRP but they sell out very quick and it's super hard to get.

She immediately became defensive and snapped "it wasn't MSRP!" I'm like "umm yea it was. They always do that on a new release." My blood was boiling because she just became argumentative for no reason when the conversation was just casual up until that time. Plus she tried to argue with me on Panini Direct when it was pretty obvious she had no idea what it was. How could a shop owner not know anything about Panini Direct?

It dawned on me as I was driving home that she probably thought I was trying to lay the foundation to haggle her down on boxes. It's the only reason I can think of she would get moody so quickly.

You'll recover but you did come across as the pr*ck in this one......also the box that you didn't spend $20 more on probably had a superfractor in it.

What is Panini Direct? Is that the dutch auction thing or the boxes the sell on their site that is normally equal to market price?

Yea, Panini is a bit ridiculous now. Last year though they did offer regular hobby boxes at closer to MSRP than anyone else. That's why they sold out so quick. This year they have become scalpers like everyone else.

I went to a local LCS a few weeks ago and couldn't believe how expensive everything was. Some kids were in there and wnated a box and one of the cheapest ones guy recommended was like $215.

So I think your experience is something we are all experiencing right now. Wax prices are artificially high, and should come down as companies overprint. It isn't the owners fault, being $25 off blowout is actually pretty close.

Same guys upset at this guy wanting a deal only buy cards at “75% of eBay comps”

Don’t let them get to you OP, you can take your business where you please just as they can sell at the price they want

So you started a call out thread on one of the Hobbies most popular sites because you begged for a discount and got turned down?

HAHA.

You don't go into this store a lot. You aren't a regular and a high volume guy.

You start talking to the owner about Fanatics taking over and essentially leading to the shutdown of a bunch of LCS and ruining his current method of making a living. This is like the equivalent of somebody you've never met coming up to you and asking about your mother with cancer and if you think she'll live another 5 years.

How would you like it if a stranger came up to you and said oh I heard your company is going through a round of layoffs and outsourcings right now? How do you feel about that?

You're pretty much new to him. You've already offended him.

Then your next move is to ask for a deal on a box of cards. Naturally he says no, but you're pissed about it even though it's $20.

And you're trying to convince me that HE'S the #@#@#@#@#@#@#@?

Your head is so far up your ass that you're brushing your hair with your ribs.

I agree with most on here. If I don’t like a price I move on. I don’t go into a market and haggle the price of a mango because the guy sells them on the corner cheaper. All stores are different and have different costs associated with running their business.

Entitlement. I don’t like the LCS prices but they can price product as they want.

I think this is what drove the new deal between the Player Associations and Fanatics. Fanatics probably offered to eliminate more middle men so they could then give the players that same slice instead.

Wrong thread for that though. This one is an entry in the boomerang olympics but I don’t think it will quite medal.

A**hole would rather not make a sale on a product he paid $240 for and would’ve still profited over $100 on a single box with a discount than give someone a ‘deal’. Proceeded to go to the other store and talk them down to $350 and got my five rookie pitcher autos haha. For the good store owners that are out there for the collectors, I wish you all the best but I’m not gonna be sad at all if fanatics runs turds like this out of business.

Tl:dr Hobby store owner greedy, fine with going out of business due to fanatics cause he’s well off from recent years, didn’t budge on a $400 box of topps chrome jumbo.
I never understand people who argue with someone who doesn’t want to move on their price. It’s their prerogative to charge what they want and it’s your prerogative to buy or walk away.

I would like to go to this card shop. They price things fairly and they know it. No huge prices and wasting time on negotiations. This is why I will only buy a car from Tesla in the future. They price the car and there is no negotiations, trying to sell extended warranties, etc... I don't like to negotiate and find it a PITA. Wish this grumpy guy was around me!

Why didin't you just go to the other store first and get it for $375? That said. Prices near me ar 425-500 for a jumbo chrome. So I would have been happy to pay that $400.
