Support little leagues, local school athletics, and spend quality time with your watching your favorite teams and going to stadiums/arenas.

Trying to get kids to love the hobby before they love the sport is putting the cart before the horse.

I watched sports with my dad and several other relatives. I played lots of sports. I absolutely love collecting.

My dad died when my two younger brothers were little. I’ve been able to do some sports things with the older one and he’s collected some. The younger brother never had anyone to watch or play sports with and he doesn’t give a crap about the hobby.

Simple rule for Noobs: Dont take advice from anyone that wasn't in the game prior to 2018. There is no substitute for experience. I know of a few exceptional people that have built impressive hobby knowledge in a short span, but it's a short list. If you're going to follow influencers, prioritize hobby experience.

I blame GaryV more that anybody. His whole schtick is basically pushing people to become influencers. When he got into cards, droves of wannabe influencers followed.

Most new folks would be best served learning how to pick a dollar box and putting in long hours on sites like COMC, checklist sites, good old blowoutforums, etc. Instead they watch SashaT and thought they could do that. Never mind the incredibly fortunate timing Sasha had and the unique access he had to Burbank and PSA. Now every show you see the pelican boys get rejected by dealer after dealer.

Do stock experts use the prices of PSA 10 Jordan rookies to show recovery of the stock market? Glad I got an economic lesson from a sports card "collector."

100%

Guys like Gooff the investor have little to no knowledge of the hobby itself and spend the majority of their time coming up with content for their next video. I guess they figure they can skip the part where you learn to pronounce players names correctly, or have knowledge of a particular set besides what the top valued cards are selling for. It's all just so sad.

I definitely recommend watching the two videos below that Duron linked to. I posted a link to his first video on IG last night and got a ton of people thanking me in DMs. Way more than I thought i'd see. That's the platform where these guys prey on people the most and yet there's still a solid number of real collectors there who see through the BS. It's was actually quite nice to see.

I like this post. It is sad but even this forum has become a place where bad information can be spread easily. You really do need to learn to weed out the noise and the people who have an agenda.

There is nothing that replaces hard work. And it seems like these days everybody wants to get rich quickly.

When I was really flipping on COMC I spent more time reading and watching sports than I did looking for deals. That is what it takes. You have to eat and breath sports. You need to love sports and love cards. And as we have seen most new entrants into the card world don't the patience for that. There is always a good deal to be had. You just need to know where to look.

Most people never put that piece of SashaTs model together. He lived down the street from both. A bunch of us have our local Mom & Pop shops, but none of us have Burbank. The ability to walk in daily and make deals, move cards and cash at that level (DAILY!)...is impossible for 99.9% of the hobby. Sasha worked it hard, but he had 2 pieces of his formula that nearly nobody else has/had.

You're talking the real long game here, and I like it!

I'll add this: Make friends who enjoy sports and cards too.

I text daily with a friend I've made through sports cards, and a lot of the stuff we end up collecting is because we talk about it with each other and help each other through collecting ideas.

And pertaining to your comment above: Watch sports!

One of the guys I got in the ground floor on is Darius Garland. When the flippers had given up on him was the time I got in on him. How did I know? I watched all season and saw his progression. I also reached out to Asujbl, who I know is a Cavs fan, and asked him if he was seeing what I was seeing. Now I have an amazing PC collection of a player I enjoy watching and collecting.

You pretty much explained my brandon Ingram story.. If his card value falls off the face of the earth, I will still be a fan and collect.. He is the most underrated hobby and talent wise

This guy made some good points, but man, the nonstop hand rubbing/hand movements were distracting.

That’s 14 minutes of my life that I will never get back. I’ve never seen someone try to be very informative, while at the same time, being very uninformative.

Brandon Ingram's card values have fallen off the face of the earth

He went from most improved during the Covid boom to least talked about/most irrelevant "star" player during a year when prices have tanked.

I don't even have to look at any charts or comps but I'm certain his prices have halved from late 2020/early 2021. Probably most are selling for 20-33% of where they were

Ironic enough, all the know it alls on here always said the crypto market was correlated to the sports card market and thus so much pumping when crypto was up.

When crypto doubles again cards won't be pumped again. Crypto can go back to peak potentially.
Cards won't overall.

This isnt at any specific influencer specifically....but why ppl actually care? I get "stock tips" and stuff...but ppl making videos "telling their stories" well just seems dumb and not a part of the hobby to me.

Thoughts?

It popped up on my feed and just for kicks I watched it up until she started pulling out the graphs and talking about cards like stocks. That was it for me. Am not saying you cannot get good advice from some of the “influencers” but if you are buying what they are pushing usually you have already missed the boat.

Do your own research. Make friends in the hobby who you talk sports and cards with. The media has an agenda when it comes to sports, so be careful what you read and believe. Hobby first mindset will have you buying what you like and not what “they” say. I have seen far less content from influencers since the National. They say things were popping, but I had friends there who told me the real deal. The Pelican case guys were not having a good show at all. Dealers had the upper hand and many were willing to take down to 60% of comps because some bigger cards were under water and they don’t understand how markets work.

I knew she was full of crap when she was telling people it was a “good time” to get into Luka Prizm PSA 10 when they “fell” to $1400 lol

…concerning Burbank, does anyone remember when they used to sell wax boxes at their shop? I bought 1995-96 Ultra boxes all day for $35. Did someone buy out all their wax inventory at some point?

If I was an influencer, here would be my plan:

QUIETLY buy up certain cards/players for a few months on the cheap. THEN make a video saying how great investment these players/cards are. When the sheep start making moves, you unload and make a huge profit. Rinse and repeat.

I'm sure some of those great influencers do that now, that is one way I would capitalize on this if I were them.

Bottom line, use your own brain. Make decisions because you did your research, etc. Not, because some "influencer" said it's a good buy!

What do you mean "Im sure some of those..."? Thats exactly how they do it. They've been doing it for years. Cards, VHS Tapes, Tickets, Toys, Magazines, etc. The more passionate they are, the bigger their stack is. Its been proven time and time again...over countless influencers.

Unopened “expert” Steve Hart from BBCE bought their inventory.
