Everything about the story is ridiculous, including that anyone would pay that much for a prospect card of anyone given the super long odds of success (much less prolonged success) in baseball.

Reading ESPN for Pre-rookie Prospecting advice is like reading Motor Trend for oatmeal cookie recipes

Unfortunately, politics in some form or fashion will find a way to interfere with sports. For example, not even the world's most popular sport, soccer, is immune. There has been a steady increase of cities around the world (Paris being the latest) boycotting the upcoming World Cup because of, you guessed it, politics.

I like politics in sports so long as I agree with it

Which is generally not the case

So lame. I really wish people would stop letting silly human rights violations get in the way of having fun.

"About four years ago, Allen invested money he made from private equity into cards. ("That's something I really don't want to get into," Allen says when asked about his background. "A lot of people want to know the story.") "I parlayed my profits into my passion," he says now, wielding a sports card collection, by his own estimate, worth more than $100 million."

Hmmm, doesn't want to say how he got his money - not a red flag at all. I'm sure it was all legit.

This Shyne/Pitbull d-bag looks super trustworthy - wasn't he involved with the infamous Pokemon/G.I. Joe BBCE debacle?

"We all got duped, agreed?"

-derka derka, I was good at cookn' the blue stuff
-derka derka, I was just a different version of Jeffrey Dahmer, just got rich doing it

What a scummy POS quote.

Yeah, there was a period of time ESPN tried to be more like CNN -- it didn't work out.

Now even CNN is trying not to be like CNN.

Wow -- I didn't realize that. At least there's a Topps Now rookie lol.

Steven Kwan -- likely the 3rd best rookie in the AL this season, but last in Topps' heart. Asian discrimination is real, people.

This guy has bought MANY of the $1m+ modern cards that have been sold in the last few years. I think without him in the industry, that ultra high end market takes a massive hit.

This ^

The whole high end modern market has been getting pumped by this guys answer and Mr “ I have 5 acres on a golf course and a 9 figure bank account.” Some people in life equate success with their net worth, and surprisingly many people like that also get caught doing illegal or immoral things to get there. I would not be buying anything modern that these two are involved in, and once he gets bored what if he runs into potential troubles and dumps his cards. That market goes right with it.

And lost $1 million plus buying a fake Pokemon case to flip to his buddy.

It's pretty much impossible to separate sports from politics....after all, most stadiums/arenas were built using either taxpayer dollars, public land, or both.

Any time a public university fires a football coach, taxpayer dollars are wasted (ask Wisconsin & Nebraska taxpayers) paying the buyout clauses.

And believe it or not, athletes are allowed to have political opinions just like the rest of us....

Pretty clear how some of y’all would have felt about Muhammad Ali in his day.

Funny how one product just sticks in some people's craw. You guys probably think about these cards even more than anyone who bought them

I still would’ve hated him. He fathered a child with a 16 year old when he was 34 and also allegedly had a sexual relationship with a 12 year old. I bet you didn’t know that but you do you and keep idolizing the man.

I'd love to tune into ESPN and listen to reporting on public money being waisted on sports. You won't ever get that type of politics on ESPN, though.

Heck, you won't even get a serious and open discussion on social issues on ESPN, like trans athlete rights. HBO Sports had a report on it a few years ago that was pulled from airing.

Sports is big business and the only type of political coverage you'll get on ESPN or other mainstream sports outlets is the politically correct kind or the kind that won't upset league partners.
