HRs are for showboaters who take the easy route out and don’t know how to play the game the way it was intended

I’m not sure if I’m being made fun of or not. I’m sorry if I made a mistake or something

You quoted oWAR about a guy whose award came in 1944. Advanced stats weren’t exactly a thing back then.

That being said, Marion’s MVP wasn’t that outrageous at the time. He was pretty highly regarded as a leader and being a shortstop, offensive numbers really weren’t as important. He barely won the MVP that season and Musial had just won it the previous year. Some writers were still of the old mindset that players get an MVP and then it’s someone else’s turn. Of course Musial was back to winning the MVP when he returned from the war.

war.
Ok - thanks Skip!

I understand that advanced stats weren’t around back in the 40s… I just thought I had seen others refer to the advanced stats of past players in retrospective fashion without the “world freaking ending” reaction. I didn’t realize it was bothersome to some. All good - won’t make that mistake again.

It's all good and you're absolutely right. Everyone does it around here and I think yours just happened to be the post Jon grabbed. His was probably more a statement on the over-reliance on all things WAR even to a point where we are pointing out a player's WAR from 80 years ago. But it doesn't change the fact that Marion wasn't on the same level as Stan the Man that season it's just one of those quirky things.

Marion was actually very highly regarded because of his association with the very successful Cardinals, his leadership, and his defense. He is one of only a couple of players to get 40% of the BBWAA HOF vote and not eventually make the Hall.

No award in baseball can match the randomness of a place kicker winning the MVP in the NFL.

Why does that seem weird? Literally anyone on a hot-streak between 4-7 games could win a World Series MVP.

Pearce went 4-for-12 with 3 HRs.

He just got hot at the absolute perfect time.

You don't think Steve Pearce is random? A guy who never had over 400 plate appearances in a season?

Did you even read the title of the thread? Weird reason to seem irritated.

That past performance means nothing though. Just go look at the past winners of this award...

2021 Jorge Soler
2011 David Freese
2005 Jermaine Dye
etc.

Winning the award has nothing to do with career statistics and everything to do with who got the hottest over a VERY small stretch.

Pearce's hot stretch just happened to occur in the World Series and not some road trip in the middle of June.

This thread is suppose to be fun, not sure again why you seem so irritated. Steve Pearce super fan or something? Hater?

I'm not irritated, just somewhat confused why anyone winning a WS MVP (or LCS, or DS) would be considered "random".

At the start of any WS, there are literally like 25 people who have a legitimate shot of winning it.

Mark Lemke approves this message (although no MVPs)

George Bell had 9 straight seasons of 80+ RBIs, including 4 seasons over 100. He had 47 HR, 134 RBIs, and a 308 BA in 1987. How’s that random?
