The ever-escalating Nolan Ryan candid photo boosting a base card was out of control - 3D 1989 UD: $15!, throwing a football high #: $15!, Tuxedo card: $40!

This is an incredible thread...

As a 1989/1990 super collecting 13 year old: The Bo FB/BB 1990 Score eclipsed the Griffey UD for a brief period.

Then I remember the first spring training pump of my life: 1990 Joey Belle - the 1990 Leaf went to $10, then $20, then even higher with his first 8 or 9 HR that spring. Then he'd hit two more the next day and it was up another $10.

(and we wonder why this stuff was printed to the moon!)

I'm not sure exactly how high the card went, but when Cecil Fielder hit 51 home runs in 1990 his 1986 Topps RC was pretty expensive.

I think every RC in 1987 had a moment or two (Magadan! Greenwell! Joyner! Burks!)

I actually think it was helped by having Beckett as a monthly price guide with arrows guiding the market up with all those arrows. Didn't want to miss that rocket ship!

I definitely remember this card specifically. There was a store called Paper-Rama which had a small selection of baseball cards and supplies. We would ride our bikes and always go to check out what they had. They always had ready available 1986 topps rack packs back in 1990/91 and a few would always have Cecil Fielder on top. The local card store was paying $6 for each one! What a flip back then without even knowing it as a kid…

I actually find this thread super interesting as somebody who wasn't around back in the 80s

Seems like the card world has operated on hype since the 80s

The 1990 Leaf Thomas and any player from the Elite pulled from the early Donruss years was like hitting gold. I stopped collecting as a kid right around 1993 so missed out on the rekindling of the hobby after the lockout. Seeing these threads I really wish I hung in as I definitely missed out growing a nice collection of stars that have come onto the scene within and before that missed period…

Back to the original question… Is this trivia? As in, there is a specific answer that the OP is seeking?

Because I don’t recall an ‘80s card peaking higher than the McGwire USA card in 1998.

The Sosa ‘90 Leaf was a popular card at the time (but not ‘80s). Griffey’s UD got pretty high at some point. The ‘84 Fleer Update Clemens is the only card I can imagine getting close. But even then, I don’t know if that would’ve happened in ‘98.

They were in the $275 each range. Some of you old-timers may remember Big Bob's Baseball Cards in Milford, CT. He was literally and figuratively huge before he went to prison for being an all-around scumbag. Well, 14-year-old me worked there (unloading 60 lb. cases of 1987 Topps from the back of trucks) and I remember a guy walking in with a briefcase that had an 800 ct. box full of 86 Donruss Cansecos. He left with a lot of money.

I don’t remember them getting that high. Not even in the city of Oakland.

1981 Topps Joe Charboneau, ROY. You could get a 1968 Nolan Ryan RC for a couple of Super Joe’s RC. He had a great baseball digest story of pulling a tooth himself with whisky because he couldn’t afford a dentist.

Another for me would be 1999 ultimate victory Rick Ankiel. Sold the foil version for $1000 at the height of Ankiel mania.

The 1963 Topps Pete Rose RC jumped from $300 to $600 the moment he passed Cobb.

The 84 Topps Traded set and the 84 Fleer Update set sold for $17 when they came out. The Topps set took off when Gooden did and left the Fleer set in the dust passing $100. Then Clemens won the Cy Young and MVP in 86 and Puckett became Puckett and suddenly the 1984 Fleer Update was selling for $300 while the Topps stayed around $100. I bought the Topps back then and didn’t get around to getting the Fleer until the last few years.

As someone who recently purchased that card, I wish $600 was the peak.

Nice try, the only people trying to defend the vultures back then are vultures themselves.

Bringing up the players themselves here is irrelevant, everyone selling cards then obviously knew newbies were being gouged. Furthermore, Sosa and McGwire RCs are back to $5 adjusted for inflation.

I remember looking up in Beckette magazine each month and tallying my cards (or the ones I could find in the monthly magazine) to see how much my collection was worth. At the time I didn't have a ton of cards either.

I remember buying (at a target or walmart) a hobby box of Topps in the late 90s and it was under $20 (probably an older set) and thought I was so cool opening a box vs a few packs.

My LCS at the time, would buy and sell cards at half beckette value and I remember it because I wanted to trade some cards in for other cards but honestly couldn't tell you who I wanted. I mainly just enjoyed opening packs and looking/reading all the card information.

Great post

I sold a psa 8 (OC) 85 Mcgwire for $300. Henderson was at $200 raw. The 82 TT ripken is one of the few cards of that era to hold its value pretty well.

You sound like someone who was on the wrong end of many a transaction. Vulture? Supply and demand. You should have stuck to collecting base cards if the problem was the values of cards being out of reach for you.

Such a strange thing to be in a hobby and be as miserable as you seem to be. Maybe kite flying or something less triggering might be wise for you.

Back to the topic, I remember around 1996 or 1997, the 1987 Donruss Greg Maddux RC kicking off the grading craze as high grade copies of his card went bananas once PSA started slabbing them.
