RIP. I figured he wasn't in good health when they said he wasn't going to the negro league tribute.

He has not been for years like 10 plus. He was practically blind and wheelchair bound

For those people who put their willie mays cards up for sale for a quick buck, DON'T. This is equivalent to Kobe passing. At least wait a year.

Geez. I honestly think 3 of my Top 10 favorite cards in my collection are of Mays. Just coincidence, but dang. RIP Say Hey Kid.

Knew this day was coming, but it still sucks. Rest in peace to arguably the best all-around player of all-time.

There are now only 2 players left from the retired half of the 2001 heritage autograph set. Bobby Shantz, who is 98 and Vern Law.

Jerry West, Bill Walton, and now Willie Mays just sad we've lost these all time greats in such a short span. Growing up as a kid, Mays, Mantle, Aaron, Ted Williams, Koufax were just some of those names where they larger than life untouchable icons in my eyes. I wasn't of course alive to see them play, but reading up on them, hearing stories about them, just had me in awe. Grateful that Willie had a long fulfilling life. Just hate when we lose these historic legends in the sports we all love

Koufax is now the only star who started his career in the 50's still living

The 'ole saying; "They don't make 'em like they used to" is never more befitting, than it is toward this particular ball player,...and more importantly,...this MAN!
RIP, Mr. Mays. |

A lot of FB groups prohibit selling of a player's cards for a few days after they pass. And I absolutely love that idea. I think it's classless to post a player's cards for sale right after they pass.

Around 1988, I got Willie’s autograph at a card show in San Jose. I actually got four cards signed, but the one that stands out in my collection is the Sportflics Decades Greats. It would be a ridiculous choice for a signing now, but at the time it represented the marriage of my favorite cards to collect and what remains my ultimate brush with greatness. (And who knows, maybe I’m the only idiot to ever get Mr. Mays to sign a Sportflics card…?)
