I definitely hung around bargain boxes and stuff you don't see in peoples eBay stores. But I did try to work a few large deals with cash in hand only to put 90% of it back when the dealers wouldn't budge. O well.

I find eBay to be very inconvenient

I found it was much easier to work out great prices on sealed product, but that was about it last year. I was ready to overpay for stuff I needed for sets. Didn't find a single thing and that's why I'll only go to the show if it's in Cleveland. I'm not paying to stay somewhere when there's a 99% chance I can't even get what I want. I can't even imagine how much money walks out of that show every year if even a small percentage of attendees (as evidenced by some posts) have this same outcome.

I would suggest collecting both new and vintage so you never have a bad show

Ideally I would love to, but being only 23 its hard for me to "appreciate" a lot o the people that the "older crowd" grew up idolizing. Plus, I am on a college budget, so along with having to learn an entirely different market, the prices are pretty crazy compared to most modern stuff.

Mostly vintage sounds like my kind of show. Maybe I'll go next year.

Wheezing the juice.

So, was today just more vintage or were there any 90's gems?

You shouldn't unless you don't like money or have to have the card right then and there.

The idea, at least in my mind is to use the "junk" to try to offset cost. They dont want to take the time to list those on Ebay so you set them up at a show to sell because its easier and will help pay for the trip. This is why people that organize them do better. They have to know there is literally 0 reason to buy in person aside from impatience if they are overpricing. In person is more money and no protection. Or they can get it cheaper on Ebay with protection, its an easy choice. The only things I have grabbed are things I dont see or havent seen online because I refuse to pay $100 or $50 for a card that I can buy for $80 or $40 right in front of their face. Overpricing those cards is just going to make them eat more cost of the trip seeing as more people know this and will not buy at their ridiculous prices. I would think that selling a card for $10 less than their Ebay price is better than not selling it at all, but who knows.
What kind of protection do you need if you are buying in person. You can look at the card and see if anything is wrong with it. The eBay protection is mainly for non-shippers damaged cards etc.

Some people may find out a fake patch, or a fake card, etc. i dont know if you went but there were a lot of kids there. They may not know specifics about a card. Only to find out its fake later. Or even just missing dinges corners, creases etc. not everyone at a show stays the whole time and are rushed. So they dont neccessarily check the card out well enough, not that it applies to me bc for Pc i dont care usually. But that doesnt mean it doesnt happen.

But I was just more or less saying you have it, not that you 100% have to have it or use it. For $20 less on Ebay you get the card and "insurance". The card without insurance shouldnt cost more, it doesnt make sense with literally anything.

I went in yesterday really WANTING to spend money, prepared to spend into the 4 digits for sure if I found the right stuff. Left very disappointed. Lots of cool memorabilia to see, but the amount of vintage & graded stuff left very little show for me to actually search for cards. I don't collect anything really pre 1975, and I don't like graded cards, never cared for their bulky slabs.

I did find a couple cards I had on my wantlist, and multiple copies of each. Card A routinely sells $400-$425 on ebay, yet the "best" price I could get was $575. The other seller wouldn't budge from $650. Card B routinely sells $250-$275. Again, "best price" was well over that, at $400. Other 2 guys that had the card wanted north of $450. I expect to pay a LITTLE more at an in person show versus ebay, but with these prices, there are a lot of guys who are going to be making the trip home with a lot of inventory. And if you are a seller at a show like this, I really hope you take note that times have changed, and when you ask prices at 1.5x high ebay, that is why the cards in your display cases have dust on them. You might get one sucker, maybe two, but most of the attendees are going to go straight to ebay for comps on multiple hundred dollar cards.
In the end, I spent less than $100, I found ONE guy who had nice 90's football stuff (he was buried in a back corner), and these were the three "big" cards I purchased (pretty sad, I know)...

Man, I'm almost glad I didn't get a chance to go to the Nationsl with all this talk about the show being mostly vintage. Is it the norm for so little post-vintage to be at the National?

I went last year to Cleveland and I enjoyed the whole thing I took 10 grand and only spent maybe 1,000. If you are a tight wad and need to account for every penny you spend and are all about making mojo money and can never have a good time, probably not a good idea to go. How ever if you want to have a good time and see stuff that you will probably not get a chance to see again as far as important historical stuff, building vintage sets, or just buying random cards, I would HIGHLY recommend going.
