With guys like Judge, Betts, and Ohtani absolutely crushing it early on, and BWJ being.... just fine.... I wonder how long it takes for there to start being cracks in the overheated market, knowing that:

A. Its a long season and the first week or few weeks in a significantly small period of time, but also,
B. People are compulsive and impatient.

Interested to see how this plays out.

We’re on day 4 of the season…

If anyone wants to panic-sell any 2022 Bowman’s Best blues or golds, please contact me.

The baseball market is different from the basketball market in that people don’t panic over performance after the first few games of a 162-game season.

Some reasons, but not just limited to these, may include:

There’s way more (player and/or team) collectors in baseball than basketball. Baseball singles/wax buy-in is much lower (aka less risky) so there’s less panic selling (aka less volatile). Some players are known to start slow (e.g., JRod) whereas others start hot.

162 regular season games is a lot of time and players will eventually regress towards their mean, but where that “mean” happens to be (same, higher or lower than past seasons) is important (just like basketball).

Not saying there’s never corrections though, but basketball corrections are a different beast IMO. $0 to $100 or $100 to $0 movements after a couple of games (slightly exaggerated).

That’s an investment mentality. Most of the dudes here are ‘clecters.

This is all good feedback....

Which I'm why I'm interested in seeing what happens here.

Just to give some back story... I've been following BWJ's game for over a year (I know, not much by comparison to a lot of you), and I've been seriously narrowing down his card market and trying to buy what's right for several months. For context, the only 3 cards I've attempted to buy have graded populations of 3 or less, all 4 or 5 figure cards.

What I've noticed is that right at the moment, he probably has the hottest 'non-Ohtani' market in the baseball hobby, and it's totally a seller's market right now. I'm pretty confident that an MVP is baked into his prices at the moment. None of his recent performance (all 2.5 games) impacts my view of him, but like I said, people get distracted easily shiny things.

My thesis at the moment (subject to change as new info comes in): His market is currently overheated (short term) and being in Kansas city, he really needs to a top 3 performing guy to the attention he needs for prices to maintain where they are at. I'm rooting it.

It’s naive to think “collectors” won’t flip their cards given the right opportunity, hell they might not even mention it to protect the value of this thread. The true collector is a rare breed, usually its people with enough money that do not necessarily have to sell their collection even when there is a peak or dip.

I used the word most.

There are a lot of flippers, consolidators, opportunists in other players threads, and that’s fine, but this threads seems different in that their isn’t nearly as much price indexing that happens.

Good point. We should start a thread and ask if people think he’s legit or not.

Collector and investor aren’t mutually exclusive. It is far more common to have degrees. Most people collect specific things and sell off what they don’t want to then buy stuff they do want. And most investors (even flippers) have some items they keep for their personal collection even if it’s just a card or two. And collectors want their cards to increase in value just like investors.

Personally, I identify with collector a lot more than investor but I have way too many cards and have been selling/trading off whatever doesn’t fit into my PC so I can grow my PC. But I still want my PC to have more value than just sentimental value.

This thread vs what's going on in the market right now could be two different things.

All the money that's been driving up BWJ stuff the last isnt just coming from 'collectors'. A year and a half ago his 2020 BC Red sold for $33k. This weekend it sold for $113k.

Really for any market it's hard for someone to spend in the high 5 or 6 digits and have it be 100% collectable. Maybe some whales in the Jordan, Mantle, Ruth markets feel different, but for playing day guys, I think you have to have faith that kind of investment is going to pay off.

I think BWJ will be fine, but I also don't think his cards are overheated, they're priced appropriately if you compare their bowman 1st autos to each other (along with their associated pedigrees)

The tricky thing will be unlocking another level to his game beyond contact hitting that lets him get out in front of Judge, be it adding more power so he can compete in slugging or using his speed to add on more SBs
