I have these Griffey Jr.'s... The 1989 Upper Deck is BGS 9 Old Label with subgrades of 8.5 centering, 9.5 corners, 9.5 edges, 9 surface. The 2nd and 3rd cards pictured are both Tiffany versions. I love the 2000 SPX Signature cards especially Griff's sig.

That barrel is clean! Nice pickup. Did you see the laundry tag up? Too bad it's a Chicago one

Thank you!! The Reds (same patch) was listed at the same time. I opted for the barrel much more what I wanted right now. The white sox one is a joke lol and I've talked to the seller, out of his mind on value. The mariners hasn't been pulled yet. I'm always ok with Reds cards but I'm glad the barrel is M's that's why I snatched it in seconds. Lol. Thanks again.

Wait, a pristine is nearly 10 times the cost of a gem mint?

In that case is it almost worth it to Crack open 10 gem mint cards resubmit and hope 1 comes back pristine or now black label pristine?

I've never understood that premium btw. there is no difference in my opiniom between gem mint and pristine. Just a marketing ploy, but hey who am I to be the ruler on that subject.

The reason for the big price gap is the scarcity, just like everything else. A BGS 10 can only have one subgrade at 9.5 to get a 10. All the rest may be 10's. A 9.5 is the same, with a low of one 9 subgrade.

There are almost 24 times as many 9.5's, as opposed to 10's. There are almost 2,000 9.5's, but only 84 10's, out of over 32,000 that have been graded:

Oh I totally understand the differences between a 10 and 9.5 and why there is a premium. My argument is that there is no difference between a card with 3 10 subs and 9.5 versus a card with 2 10 subs and 2 9.5s. Also, I feel Beckett just randomly picks cards to give 10s versus 9.5s and if that if you resubmitted the same 10 cards, all gem mint that one out of the 10 would come back pristine.

To each his own but BGS really altered the standard grading process and built an artificial scarcity that I personally would not pay for. That is just me.

I definitely hear you. It really is the luck of the draw, if you'll get the higher grades, as they have to keep those percentages where they are to "create" scarcity.

I always laugh when I see the high graded cards that are sold by Beckett, on their website. You know, that for each one of those, so, SO many honest collectors are stuck with a card that is 0.5 away from the next highest grade. Basically, they sell the stocks, then price point the market. If only the SEC had a look at that practice!

Man all these Jr's are awesome! Brought me back to being a kid in Washington and watching the Mariners. Love this tribute to JR during his Mariners Hall of Fame induction

That's a great video! I grew up and live in New Hampshire, and became a Griffey fan in the early 90's. He looked like me playing baseball, just having fun! I pulled his card or of a pack of '92 Pinnacle, and was hooked from that moment.

I remember being in high school, back in the late 90's, listening to Mariner games over dial-up Internet. I remember the Mariner's radio guy saying "Fly away! Junior's got his double nickel!" when Griffey got his 55th home run in '9'97 or ''98. Another greatmemory waswhen hescored thewinning rubin the '95 playoffs vs. the Yankees. Edgar hit a double (as always!) to bring Griffey in. The wholeteam pig-pulledon him, at homeplays. Good times!

I posted some pictures of my Griffey collection earliest in this thread. Check my'em out!
