On the bright side, there's a hard deadline in 5 years of when I can stop wasting time on this hobby

Maybe they even hire a lot of Topps employees.

I just cant see the Topps and Bowman brands dying as it relates to baseball cards.
If there truly are no Topps or Bowman baseball cards in the future, then I predict alot of baseball collectors will be forever lost.

Too many collectors will want to buy Topps cards.
Why wouldn't Fanatics just buy Topps?

So isn't this what everyone wanted?

No distributors. No breakers. Online sales to the masses. Get rid of Topps, their service sucks. Get rid of Panini, they suck too.

New models. New products. New company.

Be careful what you wish for.

MLB has partnered with Topps for 70 years.

CRAZINESS!!!

That's exactly what everyone on these forums wanted.

Topps and Bowman will be to Fanatics what Donruss is to Panini.

For those who can't read beyond the WSJ paywall:

"Topps paid the MLBPA $20.4 million last year, the most of any MLBPA licensee, according to the union’s annual report to the U.S. Department of Labor. The NFLPA earned $24.2 million from Panini, according to its latest filing.

Clark wrote in his memo that the undisclosed total value of the MLBPA deal is more than 10 times bigger than any deal the union has ever struck. He added that it is part of a series of recent deals that will generate nearly $2 billion through 2045.

All three unions—the MLBPA, NBPA and NFLPA—will have stakes in the entity that will now have control of the most lucrative sports trading card assets in the country. MLB and the NBA have also struck deals with the new business and will also have a stake."

Gonna still be breakers, this actually benefits more smaller breakers.

It's gotta be that way now or the hobby is dead. Fanatics needs to own the rights to "Prizm" and "Chrome" and "Bowman" and "National Treasures" and everything else instead of inventing all new names.

With no distributors, how will they get product?

LCS's will be the next to go.

Fanatics has everything in place to be the one stop shop. They have retail stores, they have online distribution models.

Its going to be the Walmart of trading cards.

Here is another angle.

If Topps, foolishly IMO, continues with their plan to go public Fanatics could always go the merger route or even hostile take over.

I still think that they most likely scenario is Topps leasing their brand name and getting yearly revenue for doing nothing.

This kills
  • League- and Union-licensed card companies
  • Distributors
  • Wax-reliant LCSes
  • Distributor-reliant breakers

This may harm
  • Autograph authenticators
  • Autograph-reliant show operators
  • Athlete-licensed card companies (SAGE, Leaf, etc.)

This does not kill
  • Singles dealers
  • Auction houses
  • Third party graders
  • Major retailers
  • Card-reliant show operators
  • Bot operators

Basketball is different.

No one cares about topps football/hockey now.

As a fanatics employee- I can’t disclose what dept or my position - but this is exciting and great designs/ideas are already in the works for the boomers that will refuse to buy because they blindly follow a company that ran out of ideas a decade+ ago

That National is gonna look pretty good with no wax sellers, no Topps booth, no Panini booth....just a big ol Fanatics shop in the center of the room with a bunch of vintage sellers around the outside.

They just order cases from Fanatics.

LCS will be fine as well.

Pretty sure most breakers aren't getting products from distributors unless they are attached to a store already
