I have a psa 8.5 whose corners are 9.5 compared to that one... that top left corner does not look mint 9.... no offense to the card, owner, seller, and or poster but this is why the PSA graded versions go for more grade for grade.

Experts on Contenders Autos needed

I am making some moves to potentially pick up a contenders auto. After a number of years of watching from the sidelines I feel its time...

Anyways need some real insight on the autographs. Please if any of the cards I link are yours dont take offense I am only sharing for comparison sake.

How certain are we that the thin marker scribbles, that dont really look anything like any other brady auto on any other release, are indeed legit?

What concerns me the most is the way the d and y end. I have never seen Tom finis the y on an upstroke on any other card in any other issue. It always without question just finishes on a downstroke.

The contenders cards with what I am sure are genuine signature appear to have been signed with thicker marker. The scribble signatures with the y upswing are all signed with a thin black marker.

Before I put $8k plus into a card I want to be damn well certain I am not buying into a long term accepted fake auto issue.

Perhaps its been discussed before but do we have a good explanation for this?

I suggest the Playoff Round Numbers. It is actually a sharper looking card. Anyone that owns one would contest to that. Lower in price but increasing lately. No known counterfeits.

OP didnt ask you for your opinion on another card.


All the above links are graded copies, and IMO look good.

Your auto concerns are well founded, but Brady actually changed his auto after signing his 2000 rc cards to what I think is a much cleaner, and more legible autograph.

There was also more than 1 marker used during the signing, and over time (if you follow these cards) you will notice several legitimate cards having been signed with the thicker and thinner markers.

I have 2 copies of this card and 1 has the thinner, while the other has the thicker. They are both real though, which is the most important thing.

Below are mine

This was graded in 2004, when the card was only worth 300 bucks.



This one I bought raw and had graded in 2016, before counterfeits had surfaced, and were known about (at least to me)



As you can see.. two different markers.

Several other members here with copies, and like mine, some have thin and some have thicker autos.

Both Beckett and PSA really scrutinize these cards because good counterfeits exist, with the most well-known one being the "raised R" version.
The "R" in contenders wasnt set properly when it was printed, and isnt in line with the rest of the word. Once you see it, you cant unsee it, so it sticks out like a sore thumb if youre looking for it.
They also exhibit other abnormalities with the printing. Some of the examples that were noticed were on the back of the card with some of the microprint,, the way the print dots lined up, and the little nfl and players logos in the bottom left/right of the card. Its pretty difficult to print a perfect counterfeit when it comes to the actual print dots that make up the image of the card/graphics.

There is a counterfeit Brady thread that might be worth a read, but be advised, its about 30 pages long, and there is a ton of information and images that you need to weed through, as well as trolls, grandstanding, and arguments..

One or more members here basically started looking at cards under high end jewelers loupes in order to pick out some of the differences with the microprint.
In addition, the counterfeits that I have seen have a very sloppy auto with regards to the marker. I mean very sloppy. Like the sharpie was worn out, and someone mashed the tip before using it. Another thing that sort of sticks out to you if youre looking at it.
Last November, the large show in my area that BGS/PSA attend had a dealer with a counterfeit Brady. Another member made me aware of it, and informed me where he was.
He made a stink about the card, and the dealer freaked out before I got there.
He was able to take pics, and you could clearly see the raised R and the sloppy autograph.

The 8.5 was graded: Wednesday, July 13, 2016

The 9 for 14k was graded: Thursday, March 20, 2014

The 9 w/ the authenticated AU for 25k was graded a couple weeks ago: Sunday, April 15, 2018

I dont know off the top of my head when counterfeits first began surfacing, but I believe it was AFTER this card began flipping out in price, so sometime in mid-late 2016?
Ill let one of the other subject matter experts weigh in on that one.

I think the ones youre looking at appear ok. That said, make sure the one you buy has a nice clean slab. If I was spending this kind of money, I wouldnt want a single scratch on the slab.

Even the one on the bottom that is dark and thick ink. it just looks like the sigs you see on the Round Numbers version. In all likelihood, he had to sign so many Contenders, there had to be at least a few pens used, and he certainly tired at some point. It is normal. I think the best way to tell is to examine the actual card itself, much more closely.

once again, cannot reiterate enough how much I hate when these consignment companies do this. Guarantee all of those go for less than the current market... same thing happened the last round... literally every card went for less than it should have, affecting the sale values on anyone trying to move brady stuff on here or at shows.

He would need to get to the superbowl for that to happen... they are creeping back up toward 1600 right now... I think 1700-1800 is best case scenario during the season unless he gets back to the super bowl

That one is /300 and has the same pop as the base /3000. Guess people protect the rarer cards a little better when they open them.

Yea, I do not think it is anything more than that. 300 is pretty limited for a Brady RC, in Pats gear, not game gear, but still. Under priced IMO.
