How does an average Joe, like myself, get a shot at buying one of those? Or are they all pre-sold? Last edited by kpete42; 08-07-2018 at 07:57 AM. |

I will add my thoughts on the discussion about the National and related Now values - We were set up all five days with about three rows of mostly 2018 Now cards in the showcase, every RTOD set starting at $25 per set and a row of singles in a box of better cards at $5 each. Sales for the entire weekend - one Reds RTOD set at $30. No matter what we think here, people don't know what they are and I'm not sure they care. And it's too hard to explain when people are two and three deep at the table wanting to buy Ginter and Bowman and Heritage. They also can't make sense of why a Franklin Barreto card would be $25 when it's not numbered. You can't use more space or make big signs when people just don't care. Any I'm not sure that Topps really cares that much about promoting this as they told me there was not one person there from the Now division at the show when I asked some questions.

From the Beckett article about the National
“We are extremely pleased with the crowds who attended the recently completed 2018 Cleveland National. Our dealers all reported strong sales and heavy traffic all week. Corporate exhibitors indicated that their promotions were well received and that they were please with the attendance,” said John Broggi, National Sports Collectors Convention Executive Director. “Being in Cleveland once every four years is something we hope to continue.” Broggi noted that attendance was likely the highest the show has had since Mike Berkus took over in 2006. The VIP sellout was a first. Broggi also said that online ticket sales were up 35 percent higher than the previous high. Looking to Chicago in 2019, the National is already working with card companies and TRISTAR to offer a larger number of VIP passes. But that requires more autographs and exclusive cards. Another sign of a strong show came with booth sales for the 2019 National Sports Collectors Convention. They sold out in two days. According to Broggi, they’re usually at 70 to 75 percent at this point. |

Anyone know or heard if they are planning to do Players Weekend sets and jersey relics again this year?

I don't get how Matt Davidson didn't get a card. With all of the random stats that Topps pulls out of its hat and make cards for they don't do one for a feat only accomplished by The Babe.

this is a heck of card. Did Dale Murphy or Upoin win the ROY? Bob Horner was a rookie phenom as well. 2018 #roy on this ATL Braves card #128?

Not my video, happened to sit next to the person who recorded it.
Here's the 2018 NSCC Topps Q&A if interested. https://youtu.be/4502SjvqS6A?t=33m43s |

![]() Some people can get the autographed and relic cards sooner...and that is what the guy was asking about. The app they are working on Jeeves had mentioned it hopefully it lists all older cards, print runs etc, as that will for sure help the product along but I have the feeling it’s just going to be an app that sells stuff. ![]() Perhaps it’s just fatigue but when Arenado prints under 200 “Again” and reports about little to no Now love at the National, even I get concerned. So I would like to know what you all think should be added to the app to help the long term viability and collectibility of Now? I would think a registry/checklist that keeps track of (self reported) inventory along with a price tracker and hot links to eBay sales and auctions for all cards would hands down take Now to a totally different level. Thoughts???

- Sellers would have to increase their eBay sales prices or lose money. - Print runs would likely be less on the hot star and rookie cards. In my opinion, if you want a collectible product to succeed long-term, you need to cater to collectors more than rip and flippers. Do not turn your back on the rip and flippers, mind you. Just try to care more for the collectors than the sellers. Just my 2 cents. |

They are going to have to be very careful with this. When Panini launched their app it basically allowed 1 click ordering and for any of the "hot" cards they offered you had ZERO chance to get them if you are at a computer. If Topps follows the same path the autographed/relic cards will be gone instantly. |

Yeah, I sat there with an uncomfortable feeling why they would answer that way. Jeeves was not in attendance yet figured all Topps higher-ups knew the details of the Plat program. Hoping that was just a small oversight, not really sure what they gain by not being transparent on such a topic like that if not a mistake.

The Baseball Card Day at the ballpark on Sunday I picked up a few packs of the cards at Progressive field. I didn’t open them, but there is a card on the back that should have been a reference to Topps NOW instead of just the baseball card day promo. They only pushed Topps in general, which people know. They should have tied in the day’s games and said look at Topps NOW website tomorrow for a card with a moment from today’s game, and had the biggest regular season single day of TN cards with 15 total to represent one from each game to cover all the teams. Maybe people would look to buy one for the game they attended, maybe not. But their pushing cards which people already know they do was a waste. They needed to tie in niche more, and that’s yet again frustrating.

One thing that I think hurts the value is being able to redeem rewards points only on Topps Now cards. People not interested in the product redeem the points for Now cards of the bigger rookies or stars and then dump them for less than the individual bulk purchase price. It's nearly all profit to them even at that reduced price.

I think it was just a mistake and he thought the guy was talking about the base cards not autographs and such. I should have went but had a retirement ceremony to attend...I would have set them straight if not right then but afterwards. Regardless of what any of the haters say the autographs are in pretty high demand. I exchanged a few e-mails with Jeeves this morning and Now is not (as Living Devotees might say) dying. It's expanding and is actually the future of where the company is going. I imagine there are higher profit margins in on demand then in regular issues...
Some things coming include the App: If you have the app on your phone you will get push messages about card issues for your team in near real time. I mean as soon as a walk off or big event happens Topps sends out a message a card will be issued. The web site: It's getting a revamp to make the cards more easy to search and filter. Commitment: Just because Now is not big at the National doesn't mean Topps isn't committed to Now...the investment is huge. "Topps NOW is the present and future of the company." that says a lot to me...basically Topps has found a way to bypass the middle men and case sellers/breakers you mostly find at the National and go straight to the fans, why wouldn't they cut out the middle man and get the most for the autographs and high end cards they sell? Not saying packs are going away...it wasn't mentioned but I think they see this as the future of selling collectibles. Less meat on the bone for guys in the card business. On Demand is perhaps the future of breaks...maybe not now but long term. Also when I say Now, I think we are basically talking the entire line of on-line products. Read this release...how many times does it mention Now? More then any other product line... https://www.prnewswire.com/news-rele...300679882.html One thing mentioned is how people bash now and say it's dying or that Topps is putting more effort into Living. It's simply not the case...People on Blowout gravitate to Living because it is tailor made for collectors. Just 3 cards per week that always come out on Wednesday. It's easy...Topps NOW appeals to the broader MLB audience and fans who are only interested in cards when it affects their teams and not concerned with completing sets. Okay kind of rambling today and I have gotten nothing done. I need to sort and count several 1000 2016's (yes I buy them my the truck loads if I can get them). Pat Neshak printed 12736 Cards in Living and has a total of 465 Topps Now cards and most likely won't have anywhere near 12K Now cards made in his career so think about that when you want a Neshek collectible card.

Likely most complainers don't like TN because they are guaranteed their hit at a fixed price (albeit high) and no chance to get a fix for gambling addiction by ripping a $100 pack from a $400 box from a $3200 case praying to get the Ohtani Superfractor.
If someone wants a hit for the compulsion, buy RTOD sets and see what serial numbered autos or players you get! Or OnDemand, of course. |
