I know you mean well, but that's not how Goodwills, most thrift stores, and yardsales work. They instead turn their inventory into quick cash to fund thier endeavors.

Well its that attitude that some have that allow us to do this, as these type will never shop in a thrift store, but will buy quality items used online.. They do not understand that thrift stores to a point encourage resellers. Ebay and resllers has caused their revenue to increase many times over in recent years. They also cannot comprehend that many rich shop at thrift stores for things like clothes. Aside from underwear I don't think I personally have worn a new piece of clothing in 10 years.

That's an idiotic thing to say.

If you are so worried about kids donate some of that money you spend on the whiskey you talk about in every other post and maybe they can buy something nice.

Lol, what does what I drink have anything to do with what I donate? It can be separate. I just think it's in poor taste to buy things for resale when the discounted stuff should be for underprivileged people. It's greedy. When people donate their stuff to these places, do you think their intentions are for someone to buy it and flip it? When I donate things, I like to think it's going to someone less fortunate. You all are right, I don't share the same opinion so I won't post in this thread anymore, sorry for being offensive.

A lot of thrift shops operate to turn money into job programs, yes they discount clothes for those that need them, but main mission is job programs. A worse situation is the hundreds of thousands based to the heads of local thrift shops. That is something I think would distress those that donate more.

"Goodwills meet the needs of all job seekers, including programs for youth, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities, criminal backgrounds and other specialized needs. Last year, Goodwill helped more than 26.4 million people train for careers in industries such as banking, IT and health care, to name a few — and get the supporting services they needed to be successful — such as English language training, additional education, or access to transportation and child care."

Notice that it doesn't say anything about providing low-cost clothing. The sales they make fund their programs.

Also, yes we buy clothes that are cheaper and flip them, but we leave 97% of clothing on the shelves. Its not like we are purchasing every shirt that is hanging on the rack. I leave big name brand stuff on the shelves more often then I purchase them, honestly. So there is more then enough clothing on the shelves for those who want name brand stuff at a cheaper rate. Plus, a lot of the items I purchade, I keep for myself to wear. I have purchased at least 30 items that are hanging in my closet right now that I wear. I'm guessing there is something wrong with that too?

Goodwill actually encourages re-sellers, so do many other thrift stores. In the past decade the revenue of these stores has grown by leaps and bounds mainly due to re-sellers. They turn donations into CASH that they use for other programs, they need cash to operate not clothes.

Like I said earlier aside from underwear, I don't think I have bought new clothes in over 10 years. I am looking at a closet full of clothes like Ralph Lauren, Levis and a few other brands that I wear on a daily basis.

Besides who is buying kids clothes anyway? I rarely even look at it, unless something just jumps out at me.

I guess this statement is sort of accurate as most of the stores around by us have raised prices 50 to 100%. They even split up clothes sets so the top will be one price and the bottoms will be another price on different racks in the store. A couple stores have made a area behind a counter now for “special” items such as new or higher end clothes, collectibles and other items deemed higher value and prices to match.

They told people that it was due to “regulars” and management thought raising prices would increase profits for them as well. From what I understood that even drivers where being approached and paid to keep some items to the side and when the trucks came to the shop to unload those items where no longer present as they were sold by the drivers to the “regulars” before they headed back in.

So would not not be surprised as more people go there to flip stuff a lot more shops will be adjusting prices.

I know more and more shops are now taking part in the goodwill auctions.

We used to do a lot of clothes shopping there especially for the kids but we don’t bring a much clothes home as before as more and more of the clothes is about the same price as they would be new in retail.

I actually just want to say the 90% of the time I'm in the thrift store, the people shopping aren't underprivileged.

Many of the stores around me keep separate spaces full of the clothing they donate to the homeless and people who can't afford anything.

Maybe that's me being judgemental, but I see more people who are just practical and realize they can get stuff cheaper.

I mean I can afford to go buy new stuff, not underprivileged by any means, but why should I pass up on saving money?

How does one go about washing a hat without ruining it? I've tried to wash a couple of my hats before and the fabric got all wavy... reason I'm asking is because I found a Charlotte Hornets Starter cap and I want to clean the tags up. The only one like this one on ebay sold for $38 used and I'm trying to get every penny from it

Could you just lightly use one of those Mr. Clean Magic Erasers to clean it up?

Can we squash this once and for all? Straight from the goodwill.org website FAQs:

"If I shop at a Goodwill store, will I be depriving disadvantaged people of stuff they need?
No. Goodwill serves disadvantaged people by educating, training and placing them into jobs. By becoming gainfully employed, these individuals gain resources to buy the things they need. Many disadvantaged people who are in training or are employed by Goodwill Industries are offered vouchers or discounts at Goodwill retail stores."

That dude just came here to troll. Boredom, jealousy, stupidity. Not sure the reason but I've never felt the need to defend myself from people that whine about flipping goods.

On an actual note.

My Salvation Army had all long-sleeved items for 49 cents. I swear all of the nice stuff had to be completely ruined by staples.

I lost out on about $150-$200 in profit because the tags would have left noticeable holes

Just got my newest shipment in from Ruvilla. I check their clearance items about once per month. This time they had a bunch of Nike/Lebron shirts for $5 each. Easy and quick profit on the local buy sell trade Facebook groups. Might want to check them out!

I could not agree more. That and the fact that they use those sensors and are not careful at all when they pull them off.

Got a srixon golf flat bill hat for .50 cents and sold it for $25. Was able to ship it first class, so profited about $20. It was the first hat I've bought or sold, so will definitely be looking at those every time now.
