a 70-28 Trump county, I would imagine almost all the elected officials in that county are Republicans at that rate?

I'm not claiming fraud, I'm claiming incompetence. The alarming thing is that this county already certified their results; meaning they counted the vote, checked their records, canvassed and signed off. Only because of a hand recount were the votes found.

Every county and precinct certifies votes w/ both Dems and Reps present. Tag team effort here.

Just awful.

Where do you draw the line on your empathy?
I can think of many examples of young people making dumb decisions that ended up costing them through the nose. Do we let everyone of them just right off their incurred debts as well?
The bigger problem in my opinion wasn't that they stupidly incurred college debt, but instead lies in some of the stupid courses they chose.
I have a nephew that's in this exact situation. Went to college many years taking religious studies. Guess what? There aren't a whole lot of jobs that require a degree in religious studies.
For every young person in debt up to their eyeballs, there's a crap ton more that didn't pursue a college education because they knew they couldn't receive loans, or knew better than to bury themselves in debt at a young age. How fair is it to them?
Nothing is free.

There are no issues in the voting process.

Time for some personal facts!

I had COVID. It was bound to happen. Got exposed to someone at work, then church. Very flu like symptoms. Everything from the neck up hurt. 102.5 fever for 24 hours. I have since recovered fully and don't have it. It was what I thought it would be. My father-in-law also had it, he's 67, no symptoms. He's healthy, I could use some work haha.

Number 2. My grandma died in Michigan about 2 weeks ago. She was 90. She died from COVID. Since the lockdowns, she became pretty depressed with not being able to see people. Her kidneys failed her and she passed away. But wait, she died from COVID? Yes, the doctor recommended putting COVID restrictions on her death certificate. Whether that will happen, can happen, I don't know. I don't even know how they can really judge it. However, knowing that she went from being able to seeing family and friends virtually every day, to virtually zero, had to take a toll on her. Now, she will have a funeral in 2 weeks, and only 25 people can go. What a world we live in.

Go have Thanksgiving with the people you always do. Go enjoy life. If you're fearful still, that's okay, a vaccine will hopefully come soon. But there's ZERO shot I'm listening to any "government recommendation" based on virtually zero science.

I'm not saying things can't be changed to help these people get out of their debt, but forgiving the loans is a big no from me.

Never had a chance. Ironically, with just six days to go in his presidency, Bush said his greatest achievement (sad really) was getting the debate started about SS reform.
I really wish he would have got this done. Even if it could only be directed into index funds. The DJIA was 10k back then. I remember those against it telling everyone that Bush wanted to invest our SS funds in Enron stock. It's a shame.

I thought only democratic counties found votes :/

It was a good idea and it is a good idea but in 2005 and then by 2007, George Bush had little to no political capital left. He was the wrong messenger IMHO to try and get this done and it came at a cost. We are 15 years beyond that day, now more sunk into the program than ever before and with each passing day, the odds of reform are less and less.

Sometimes, as so many things teach us in this life, the only way to fix a problem is when it hits you square in the face and it forces you to fix it. I suspect when seniors do not get their scheduled SS checks (whenever that is), that is the day we'll tackle the issue head on.

All this talk about cancelling current student loan debt, but what about the kids signing for loans today that will be in the exact same spot down the road? I assume they will also not want to pay their bills when the time comes as well.

I'm pretty sure the idea is not to just cancel student debt for the masses but also make college free for the masses. So essentially, this admin's eyes are to set up an educational system so that any student who wants a free four year education will get it.

The EO that is being discussed would be done immediately; as in one of Biden's first action items as President. When I look to the Republican constitutionalists of the world (Cruz, Sasse, Lee, Cotton), none of them rebuke the idea that it can be done, only that it shouldn't be done. So I have little doubt that Biden could actually do it if he wanted to (the loan forgiveness side of things). I do not know how feasible the free college idea is but you can believe that the debt forgiveness is not simply a "this generation" kind of idea.

What is the argument for it being constitutional? Doesn't Congress have to appropriate the $? Or would this be a reshuffling of previously appropriated money, a la Trump and his wall?

Pennsylvania Supreme Court refused to take up the absentee ballot case. Hope that wasn't the big one Trump was talking about.

I cannot even begin to imagine how expensive a college education will be if it is given out for free.

I really don't know. Considering we're talking about almost 70x the amount Trump wanted for the wall; it seems crazy to me to be honest. But how both sides are talking about it would suggest to me it's possible.

I think the more that this becomes real, the more will be written and the more it will become clear what can and cannot be done.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother.

My Grandpa has struggled with the reduced visitations and he actually tested positive a week ago. Asymptomatic or possibly a false positive. He turned 97 today and got his most recent test back as negative. They test him weekly in his facility. He loves Dairy Queen cones and I plan on bringing him in one as soon as they allow it.

We have to be pretty close to 1/3 of the population having gotten this thing already. At 150k+ per day testing positive, the vaccines will need to hurry up because there may not be many left uninfected to vaccinate.

I think it's cancelling debt that is on the government's books so they'd in essence be paying themselves. When a bank charges off a loan, it's a hit against their allowance which was built up through the P&L. Long story short, it wouldn't cause the government to issue money. Now if it's private and government loans, then that's another story. The vast majority of student loans are held by the government though.

Thanks, hope you can quickly recover!

I think my sense of taste is a little off. I had fajitas and it wasn't the same. Could be the lingering head cold/fever.

This, sort of.

Canceling student debt is absolutely something Biden can do on day one. It's debt owned by the executive branch. All he has to do is sign the order. No Congressional approval is necessary.

Moreover, it's not money the government has to borrow or print. It's money they already did borrow or print.
