Acceptable? Sure.
Accurate? Maybe not?

People regularly throw around the terms iconic, SP, rare, and holy grail.

The one rule that follows through is the bowman/bowman draft "rule", and the collectors have spoken with their pride and wallet which is the most preferred "rookie" card.

Very true - collectors do spend much much more $$ on rookies that fit to the traditional definition than they do on first MiLB cards. That was a fun bit of math we did back in the BB21 thread

Yeah, by sheer volume and marketing, I think that’s right.

The first bowman game isn’t for everyone.

The general public needs guidelines on what to buy - that’s what maintains stability for the populace.

It will be interesting to see if this changes significantly in a generation or so. The first wave of Fanatics-influenced releases might have a retroactive impact on previous releases, especially if player-curated releases become the norm. My guess is a dual scale of scarcity and commonality, with parallels and autographs creating more distinct collector buckets.

I've been thinking about this as a concept and the guidelines you mention are definitely based around fandom and souvenir mentality. As collectibles and physical items like Aaron's 62nd or JRod's RC Rose Gold Logofractor make current waves, more people will probably jump closer to the collector/influencer bandwagon. Gary V and others might not sway significantly today but there's a dogpile potential in the future.

Gary V was a joke, is a joke, and will be even more of a joke in the future. Somehow, against all odds, he found a way to make people respect him even less with his Vee Friends release. He created the perfect example of why people shouldn’t listen to “influencers” like him. Bravo.

From MLB:

Rookie Eligibility
Definition

A player shall be considered a rookie unless he has exceeded any of the following thresholds in a previous season (or seasons):

• 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues.
• 45 total days on an active Major League roster during the Championship Season (excluding time on the Injured List).

Since a player on a 1st Bowman does not meet these requirements since they have not been on a MLB team roster, why would they be considered as Rookie Cards? For me, they do not.
I PC Bowman firsts for my Tigers PC, but I don't consider them Rookie cards. (Pre Rookie and first professional card...yes)....fun to collect and can be profitable, but again, not Rookie cards.

Topps could fix this by mandating Bowman cards to be in minor league uniforms, but they will not because of $$$ (same thing as indicating Topps uses the RC shield for $$....goes both ways and I am sure Topps is happy making $$ both ways)

To each his own...have fun with your collections.

Yes, the only way Topps can fix everything is to keep the bowman players in their minor league or international unis.

However, it would obviously kill their entire bowman line.

I fully agree with you! And you're right about creating the perfect example of cautiously and blindly following the advice of others when investing time, money, and energy into collectibles (fungible and non-fungible).

I think the "dogpile" aspect is around something a little more evenly distributed. Topps NOW and endless print runs of base cards means collectors can dictate demand. But I'm not sure if there's anything changing regarding scarcity when the bigger, more sought after names are likely to command a premium like we saw for Judg's autograph parallel.

Relating it back to Chrome and these silver packs, many believe the debacle involving failure to insert SSP's were a bamboozling to a hyperactive degree. Others still believe the upward slant for MSRP and low/no ROI on the primary market is going to cannibalize demand and create still more divisiveness amongst fans of the hobby, perhaps fans of the game. Did SpongeBob get a price bump because of the series clinching homer? You bet. But the next product and the first product also gets a nice spotlight as well.

I find secondary influence a smidge gimmicky, but I'm not susceptible to it, at least not unreasonably. I'll still gladly buy and open what I like. But the window and sphere of influence is narrow for me, and I bet for many others as well.

Yep! And the JRod SPs are showing up on eBay and it’s not the same pose as the Logofractor.

The plot thickens….

Not weird. Plenty of stuff flies under the radar but if you get the attention of a triangle masher, it's jail for you at least for a while.

1st bowman and 1st bowman autos typically always sell for more than any topps chrome rc of that player. Unless it’s a ssp, I myself like the bowman 1st...
