How long are people going to use the excuse "2021 doesn't count" for poor to middling performance?

But one of the funnier takes in this thread is “2020 doesn’t count, but he did alot better in the second half”. So the 2nd half counts, but the whole season doesn’t

So, is this debate just going flare up every few weeks until the next season starts?

Vlad played 60 games as a 21-year-old. Why would anyone write him off after that? We might as well write off Tatis for his .714 OPS in September—he was a bum for half the season.

While it wasn’t smooth sailing the whole time, Vlad had some very impressive stretches—including the last couple weeks of the season. Two weeks isn’t that long, you say? Neither are the couple weeks when he struggled. All numbers, slumps, hot streaks, etc., are magnified by the season’s truncation. Had it been a 162-game season, Christian Yelich could’ve ended up an MVP candidate. We’ll never know, because the normal course wasn’t allowed to play out.

We all know that players have slow or fast starts, and slow or fast finishes; that they have slumps and one or two standout months over the course of a six-month, 162-game season. And we all should know that, just because Juan Soto is showing otherwise, that most 21-year-olds aren’t anywhere near their peak capabilities. (Yelich, for example.)

And did you know that Vlad is younger than his legendary dad was before he had his first major league plate appearance?

And have you thought about why the Blue Jays kept Vlad in the middle of the lineup for most of the season? I’m going to speculate that the professional talent evaluators in Toronto know what kind of talent they have on their hands, and that they’re allowing him to grow into the kind of player who can carry the team with his bat.

I get the weight issue. But he’s working on it, having noticeably lost weight in September, and he’s now in a conditioning program in the DR. It wouldn’t be surprising if a college-aged kid had a grow-up moment. (As a Giants fan who watched the very talented Pablo Sandoval eat away his stardom, I’m sensitive to the issue. Vlad isn’t in Panda territory.)

Chances are that he’s going to be a major headache for opposing pitchers for a long time. And if his reign as a dominant hitter starts in 2021, nobody is going to care in 2026 or 2031 that he didn’t fully establish himself in the shortened 2020 season.

Give the kid a second to develop.

I dont ask these questions, lol. But the top left corner isnt perfect. Ive bought several cards off of this guy previously (FB group). Its amazing what pops up on there every once in a blue moon.

None of the top left corners are perfect. That’s baked into the $250-$300 that these usually go for.

It’s not as much of a steal as the Update black that went for $80 last winter. But it’s still a heckuva pickup.

This is my second dip into the sagging Vlad market this offseason. (Offseason for the Jays, at least.) I got an Update gold (raw, in great shape) for $30, and this for less than half its peak from a few months ago.

Hah. I got that Vlad black for $80. I even let the guy know it was worth more then that. He let me know I was incorrect as book price was only $50 or $60.

This came in today. Absolutely delighted with the grade. I’m surprised the pop report on 10’s for this card is so high given how hard fouls are to grade, but I’m not complaining!

High pop report or not, they’re a great buy right now. I bought one a couple months ago for $170, because at the time it was a deal. And now that’s looking pretty steep.
