Is this a better route than selling on your own?

Fairest solution.. offer her what you truly believe is 50% value in cash.. and to show that you believe it's fair, offer her the chance to buy them off of you at that price as well

Easy solution

Pre-nup

That said if I was in this position I'd be heartbroken. Sounds like she is probably thinking 30k if basing her evaluation on 50k for the bgs 9.

I tried with $10K. She said no. Based on what Ive seen on here, it seems like I gotta go $15K or even $20K.

Auction them and split half (if you're unattached to the cards)

And I don't understand why people are bashing your ex-wife. Based on what you shared, she's doing you a HUGE favor when she DOESN'T HAVE TO.

Best of luck. Hope it works out.

I'm not telling you what to do. But as for me, I would tell her to have the cards. If that's what it takes to make her feel like she won, then so be it. I don't know why you got divorced, but she seems like somebody to forget about. Forget about her and the cards. I know it hurts. I had a breakup many years ago. To get over it, I threw away everything she ever bought me. All I had left was a high school picture of her; I gave the picture to my daughter. Good riddance.

The biggest thing to take away from this is never use one attorney in a divorce.

C'mon guys...criticizing marriage just makes you seem like a bitter person.

For those mentioning pre-nups, a pre-nup would not protect cards acquired while married. But I do agree with rcmb...always get your own attorney.

If auctioning them off, wait until the playoffs. If kd has a big finals and back to back finals mvps....

I would guess that the 3 color is 20k, the 1 color is 10k, bosh is probably 500. I think 15k is fair. If she doesn't go for that send them into probstein and split the profits.

I’m confused. You call her honest here. She wants to split them 50/50 which seems like the right thing to do unless you got them before being married. If you did get them while married, 50/50 split on the value seems fair. You offered her $10,000 cash which is below 50/50 from what it seems.

Let’s pretend that this does go to a court room. I can imagine them using the eBay sales as the fair value, regardless of whether they were paid for or not or they were sold as part of some “buyer’s group.” I don’t know. I feel like we are missing so much of the story that it’s impossible to give any advice on what to do. Seems like she holds all the cards, no pun intended. You’re almost lucky she hasn’t gotten her lawyer involved here since I’m sure they’d love to know why this property wasn’t declared to her side.

Anyone saying this is why you don’t get married, well, maybe you shouldn’t be married then. Marriage isn’t the problem, never has been. It’s the people who get married that are the problem.

Can you argue value be retro based when divorce happened? If this was before Durant went to the Warriors then that would make a huge difference

Just have her and her brother list the cards for sale on Ebay and give you half of whatever they get for them. That way they won't think that you're trying to pull a fast one by listing them yourself. At this point whatever you get is better than nothing, and then use that money to buy one nice card to get you started back up with an investment piece.

It's hard to judge the value based on sold listings or forum member.
Send those cards for consignment on ebay will be the best way to do a real fair 50/50 split.
If the OP want to keep the cards, try to win them all when listing.

Sharon Stone in Casino...brutal. This totally blows, but in the fog of war, er divorce, things can get overlooked. You just wanted it done and over with right? Like others have said send them to someone like Prostein, sell them, and then divide the sale in half...after you have an attorney write up an agreement.
When people divorce both are at fault, she may be a total bitch, the OP maybe a dick, whatever, it doesn’t matter. It just didn’t work out. Good luck, I hope things work out for you.

If I’m consigning cards like this I go PWCC all the way over Probstein. These are super high end cards and I would trust PWCC to get maximum value for them. As a few others have already stated, I think selling and splitting 50/50 is your best bet. It sucks if what you want is to keep the cards, but if that’s the case you may have to accept the fact that you will have to overpay to keep them.
