Also wanted to add that the SP situation this year is going to be messed up, like it usually is because the Variation of a player may be an SP, but the Base is regular print run.

Primarily a baseball collector, how long does it take for Contenders prices to cool down? Hoping to pick up a Mullens auto closer to the $40-50 range. Just no way this is a $100+ card.

It doesnt look like an SP. I searched earlier and quite a few were listed. If in no hurry. I'd wait 2 weeks... let the crazy prices settle and pick one up towards the end of the month.

Anyone explain to me why Kerryon Johnson is a redemption but 2 live Playoff Tickets were/are listed. They redeemed them that fast? Just bought a Variation RPS and my luck I will get them when he retires. His Donruss Optic is a redemption to which tells me his Optic Contenders and NT will be to

I don't know, maybe they packed a couple out? His ROY auto and double & triple auto's are live. I lost a Playoff Ticket redemption earlier.

Probably didnt return all the cards back in time or some were damaged. We pulled a Zeke redemption and live auto in same case his rookie year.

Although it doesn’t really matter the same way it used to before all the variations and parallels meant that some scrub player who was SSP could be a $500-$1000 cars because people used to collect the set.
A few years back I made my mind up that I was going to figure out the SSP. I had just retired so I had a lot of time on my hand. First I made a spreadsheet of all the rookie autographs and then just started checking current and completed auctions.

If I found more than five autographs of any player, then I dropped them off the list. After a week I had the list down to 10 players, I made alerts on eBay for their names. I did multiple alerts for first set and last names, plus auto or contenders. I wanted to make sure I covered all possible outcomes.

The card that I thought was an SSP finally hit and I did a BIN for $200 I think. It was Aaron Kelly and it turned out to be SSP to 22. Once they announced the list I listed it for a BIN of $1100 and it sold in a few minutes.

I never tried it again because they started doing retail only and it was just too much time. The money was cool but I was more happy that I figured out the SSP.

Not sure I understand why that will make it messed up. There’s been plenty of variations in past years that were SP or SSP while the base were not.

That is pretty cool, nice work figuring that out. I believe Aaron Kelly is the shortest printed Rookie Ticket to date.

So the ones with the front logo in color and the players hometown on the back are the variations? Seems odd that those would be the variation and not the base. Not a big fan of how many variations there are this year. Every player has a base, a base variation, a stub variation, an acetate, a 20th anniversary variation, then to top it off you have Playoff, Cracked Ice, and Championship parallels of both base variations. Then with the playoff parallels some are #/99, #/49, #/15, #/10 and the same with the Championship tickets. Just WAY too many variations IMO, I know that Panini did this so they can create more product to box and sell becasue of the strong RC class this year but man!

Just from the looks of active listings, I am guessing that Ronald Jones RPS is going to be a SP.

The massive amounts of variations have

A. killed the SP market

and

B. made it much, much much harder to figure out what is SP and what is not.

Back before there were 1000s of parallels, the guy either had lots of base autos....or he didn't. Now, the guy might have 100 parallels on eBay but 1 or no base. Sure, a few people will chase the base SP...but if you just want a Contenders auto of your guy...you can buy the variation...or one of the 1000s of other parallels of that guy.

Shame what they have done to this brand.

It's not limited to this brand. The companies are doing it almost every product. Even Bowman Baseball has buttloads of new refractors, making you think you're pulling value, but you're pulling a Blue Wave, which is a pale imitation of a Blue Refractor auto.. doubling/tripling the output of hits, but devaluing the product the same time.

Just pulled the trigger on a Lauletta Base Contenders - may regret it if he flies out of retail at some point, but at least I am a Giants fan.

I hope you are right - I pulled the regular version on Friday and I'm holding it for now.

From the breaks I’ve watched, I’m guessing Jones and Lindsay are SP. Does anyone complete the set these days? Maybe just a base auto of everyone, beyond that seems far too difficult.

How many cards are sp, ssp?
Like 10 players get sp and 10 get ssp cards?

Ediy- not the # of cards made per player, the number of players who get the treatmemt.
