No fans and televise the games. Skip straight to the playoffs. Could be done but who knows if they'll actually do it. Seems like it's getting pretty late in the year unless they do something soon. They could skip any summer ball activiities and even have most of the starters sit out preseason next year if they wanted to.

My guess is we will see a few regular season games/playoffs early august through mid October. Shortened 2020-21 season starts mid to late December.

Good thing is, if it comes to a vote between team owners

16 playoff teams
vs
14 non-playoff teams

I don't see them shortening next season but I guess anything is possible. Why affect 2 seasons instead of just 1?

After this is all done and over with I don't think they want to look back in the history of the sport and see it effecting 2 seasons.

Makes zero sense for them to restart the year this late and run the risk of ruining next season.

- players still need to get into playing shape which is miles different than workout shape from home drills with the fam

- you're already cutting into what would hypothetically be next season's offseason used to rejuvenate/prep the body for another grueling 82 game season that starts in October

You're basically putting out a rushed/slopped truncated product just for the sake of doing it. Further increasing the chance of injury to your biggest names while simultaneously running the risk of destroying 2 seasons instead of 1 due to the scheduling.

I get everyone misses it. But people shouldn't be so nearsighted. This situation is nothing like baseball, football, or UFC.

Seems like even if they do cancel this year, next year is gonna be affected regardless.

The problem is that next season is not guaranteed to start on time either. If they start back up and fail, at least they can work on those things before next season starts. If they don't come back and then start next season and have the problems that could have been worked out, they could lose two seasons.

Ha! I like the way you’re thinking, but I believe all votes taken to the BOG requires 20 of the 30 for approval.

Who said they would shorten next season? It would be a reset of the calendar. Finals would end in Late July or early August.

Yea, LeBron is the only player in the NBA who wants to play again what an incredibly moronic post

Pingbling suggested it as a possibility above.

At this point who knows what they'll do. It would be great if they were able to finish this season. I don't have my hopes up too high though. Every week that goes by we just keep getting closer to next season. And the easiest thing for them to do would be just cancel the rest of this year instead of screwing everything up for the future seasons. You could push next year back but then that affects the summer rest period of the year after and now you've affected 3 seasons.

Because Lebron wants to get a ring in LA...he's not getting any younger.

Exactly. This will be all about that $$$. Maybe China can offer them a couple billion to put them up in a city to play out the playoffs. LeBron would love that.

Yet another brilliant Bron boyz contribution to this thread!

Bron has been pretty vocal about getting the season completed, but we all know his obvious motivation to do so.

He should think about safety and human lives before serving his personal self interests.

Most other nba players who have been vocal about restarting also have their own personal financial reasons to resume play.

We as fans would love it as well, but having any single individual contracting covid -19 as a result of hastening play would be disastrous to the league.

I know it is difficult to demonstrate patience as bron fan boyz, but displaying some discipline would help improve your public image in the long term and garner you some sympathy.

That's still practicing greater risk aversion regardless whether or not next season gets delayed by government regulations.

We have to think about this:

- players have only now been cleared for 'social distancing' training at local facilities only where local state regulations permit

- absolute best case scenario...truncate the season to just the playoffs...you'll still have to wait until all 16 teams are allowed to practice in full without social distancing implications

- once the above is cleared...there's still at least several weeks involved to get players remotely close to playing shape/conditioning again

Figure in a tentative timeline of about 2 months from now if the stars align, that will place the postseason starting in mid-July.

Traditional playoff format lasts approximately 2 months. Even if you truncated that a bit, you'd still be looking at around a month and a half of games played. Which would place the crowning of a champion at around early September...at the earliest.

Preseason games begin in October. That would leave an approximate 1 month interim between seasons...not even factoring in the new draft class would not even have had time to acclimate to their new teams or the offense.

Essentially by playing the remainder of this year out, you're already saying you're willing to sacrifice the integrity of next year JUST so you can crown a champion (which will already have an astrisk next to it regardless the outcome). That does not seem like a good risk to reward ratio to me.

There's simply too many bads to outweigh the possible goods.

NBA just had the unfortunate privilege of nearing a conclusion just as the virus' 2020 season tipped off.

What he said. End this season and try to salvage a full season in 2020-2021.
