If that isn’t the truth. One of the most infuriating things about working in the mortgage industry (I’ve been in it since the early 2000s) is the huge gap between those getting rich and the behind-the-scenes employees—pencil pushers, clerks, processors, etc.—who receive little recognition and poor compensation. It’s a widespread problem in the industry and a major reason so many mortgage companies lay off low- to mid-level employees. To them, as long as the big earners are raking it in, everyone else is expendable and easily replaced.

The best jobs to me, are the entrepreneurs who work for themselves, or own a franchise business (like a Subway, Domino's, etc), or who work in the public sector (government job)

Tons of incentive with those

For the poll, I answered #3. The mortgage industry is cyclical. Outside of the all-too-uncommon interest rate drop, you can almost set your watch by when it will be busy and when it won't be busy. (i.e., when I will be working hard vs. when I will be on auto-pilot/not working too hard)

Government (Public-Sector)

Case in point: Both of my parents worked state or county government jobs for years and retired by age 58. (This was back in the early 2000s, but in my opinion, once you land a government job, it's incredibly hard to get fired or laid off, and the benefits and pensions are unmatched.)

In the 90s when I was 18, my wife and I both worked at Target. I worked in the backroom and basically did the bare minimum. I wasn't trying to slack off but I also wasn't trying to work hard either. After a 90 day probationary period you would get a $0.25 raise. They called me to the office after 90 days and I went in there confidently to get my raise. Instead I got fired which completely blind sided me. Between writing them a nice letter, them admitting they never warned me, and my wife hinting at quitting...they gave me my job back. It kind of lit a fire under my a$$ and I tried very hard. I found that working hard gave you a sense of self worth, the tasks/jobs were getting done which made every day work easier as you weren't behind, everyone's attitude changed as they would be very happy to see you and show respect, you got more hours, you got mentioned when promotions were available, and you could use the job as a 8 hour exercise routine.

I carried that attitude/ethic through my life and have had nothing but fond work memories anywhere I went.

Seriously. I was in the best shape of my life when I was working as a grocery clerk overnights during college breaks.

As a public-sector employee myself, I can confirm all of this and it remains relevant/true to this day.

The only thing that may be different depending on the hire date for employees in my state is that the retirement age has been extended over time. Thankfully, I started early enough where I'll be able to fully retire at 55. Current retirement tiers in NYS government for newer hires can't retire until 63.

Pumpkin coffee is a once a week thing, while it lasts. Otherwise, I get my coffee black.

Bacon, egg, and cheeses are gross, unless I need some quick, greasy food for a hangover.

Alcohol is worse for you than the snacks you don’t eat.

Yep. Feel like I’ve propped up coworkers my entire life, finally opened my own small business and work alone now, still work hard but I reap all the rewards, and couldn’t be happier.
