I played with the numbers and I think I'm going to leave things where they fell. It's my first test at this school, so I'll let students know that they better study or I'll have no problem failing half my class. I might soften up with time, but they need to know I'm serious about studying.

Plus it will give them motivation not to dick around with the project I've assigned.

Our principal is randomly sitting in on classes for the next few weeks. My gut tells me he'll be in my class tomorrow. I'll post an update later.

Was just grading some projects...two kids handed in identical posters. Well this will be a "fun" conversation Monday after break...This is definitely a difficult part of the job. Hate having to be the bad guy sometimes.

Yay for plagiarism!!! I also coach the debate team - pretty sure most of the stuff I got this week from them was copied off of debate.org.

Side note: If anyone has coached debate and can give me any pointers...IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!

4 more days until summer break starts. Just found out that we got the grant I did, $400,000 for the school and community.

Still have three full weeks until our spring break.

Broke my ankle ten days ago so my first full week in the classroom without being able to move around much was AWFUL. I'm always on the move so being forced to stay seated with my leg up is really testing my patience.

standardized testing (to measure students but really to measure how "effective" a teacher is) is the bane of education right now. Ohio already paid for all this testing even though there's a huge backlash right now (and it's pretty much proven that too much standardized testing not only stresses students and teachers out but it also takes away from actual learning). however, since Ohio already paid, they aren't not going to get what they paid for, so here's my schedule:

beginning of the quarter 1/21- students took a course pre-test to set baseline measures on what they know.

2/21- I had to finish a project to get a 5 year license and out of the "resident educator" license (basically trying to make teaching like being a doctor...)

2/23 through 2/27- Students in grades 3-12 take performance-based assessments (most just have reading, math, and history for the 10-12th grades). Though, i'm not sure how much use these results are going to be. The history test that I looked over were 17 or fewer questions and verrrry specific. If you knew jack #@#@#@#@ about the Industrial Revolution or any other important American history but knew everything about WWII, congratulations you passed.

3/16 through 3/20 - current 10th through 12th grade students must take the previous required tests that are being phased out for graduation (basically they start in 10th grade and just have to pass a test in each subject area before they can graduate). THese tests will only be required and administered to current 10th graders and any 11th and 12th graders still needing to pass a few subjects for graduation. current 9th graders and below are on the new testing track, so the number of kids taking these tests will dwindle.

also from 3/23 through 3/27 students have to take their end of course test that they took in the beginning to show if they grew or not. this one is strictly to measure teachers effectiveness (but does a poor job).

sometime either later in march or early april the students have end of course exams that took the performance based exams. These are somehow different than the tests i listed above.

thanks NCLB. Your heart was in the right place, but damn did you really screw up the educational system. I know all of this testing was brought about so people could look at results and point at the lousy teachers to get rid of them, but damn, you can already tell who is a shitty teacher from who isn't without all this testing taking time away from actual learning.

Anyone else enjoying summer? I'm loving this prep time. They say it takes 3 years to really get the whole teaching thing under your belt. Gotta say I agree.

Year 1: Just trying to survive.
Year 2: I actually know what I'm doing and can experiment with what I want to do.
Year 3: I can fine-tune my ideal classroom structure.
Year 4: Material is mastered and classroom structure is firmly tuned.

Years 5-15 Have a student-teacher assigned to your room and have them do all the lesson planning, grading, progress reports, bulletin boards...and also get holiday gifts from them

Year 1 is pretty much the same as any other year when knew standards, district mandates, etc come into play. It seems that every 5 or 6 years the whole system is overhauled around these here parts. And you are always fine tuning because what is ideal with one class is not so with another one. I think year to year about the groups of students I have had the joy (don't see that word very often when it comes to education) of teaching and what worked with one group didn't with the very next one. Don't even get me started on mastery. I can't tell you how many folks claim to be masters, but they are really quite weak due to neglecting the fact that changes come around faster than ever, especially when new technology becomes part of the curriculum. In the end, as long as you enjoy what you are doing and are confident in what you know, you will be a much more effective teacher. The moment you don't like the job, it is time to step away from it for a bit. For some that is year three. For others, it is year twenty three.

I recently graduated in December with a degree in secondary ed social studies. I am in PA and the jobs are tough to get. Recently branched the job search to NC and VA. Have put about 30 apps out in the last week, how long does it usually take the schools to get in touch? I am headed down to NC for a big educators job fair in the 25th.

Any teachers get hired in the summer and have some insight into the process?
