Imagine having a "Mehh" season according to some thus far with a .300 average and 19 Home Runs.

The idea that he'd have hobby standing compared to Ohtani (last three years, MVP, 2nd, MVP, plus favorite this year) is a joke. The reason his BCA is priced like it is is his age and performance. If I compare him to players +/- one year he's third behind Acuna (duh) and Adley (barely). If I go another year younger you add Soto (duh), Tatis, and Vlad. The age and team adjustment puts Vlad behind by a solid 25%, which is reasonable, IMO. That leaves Tatis. Given the rest of the players prices I would say Tatis is overvalued more than Yordan is undervalued, although Yordan is still a solid play. Yordan is never going to reach the heights of guys like Gavin Lux, Andrew Vaughn, or Ke'Bryan Hayes...but that is entirely due to market. His start was legitimately slow in the face of a falling market. At one point I had put him at the very top top of my target list, but he bounced back pretty quickly.

I just took a quick look at his Savant page and the thing that jumped out to me is his chase rate is up, but so is his contact rate. That's a pretty good explanation for the slightly lesser quality of contact.

Here’s another theory as to why Yordan cards haven’t ascended into that realm of the hobby elite…
Yeah, he’s an Astro and a part-time left fielder. But there’s something else we really need to consider: he hasn’t had a signature season yet. He has some nice stats, for sure. But he’s been around for a few years now, and he has just one 100-RBI season, one 1.000 OPS season, and no 40-HR seasons. And he has never played 150 games. As such, he hasn’t produced any numbers that hobbyists can attach to (except his .971 career OPS is mighty nice), and he’s never really been a threat to win the MVP. When he finished third in ‘22, he was beat out by Judge’s historic season and dual-threat Ohtani—not exactly an opportunity for him to stand out. Now, he’s on fire these days and has been healthy (stay healthy, doggonit!) all season, so he may very well be on the verge of authoring that signature season. Which sure would be nice, because I think the hobby needs to see him bat .300, hit 45 HR and drive in 110-120, with an OPS comfortably north of 1.000. If that doesn’t do the trick, then I don’t know… I’ll blame BGeezy for hogging all the superfractors and draining the hobby of its will to collect Yordan. Name the only player in the league that has appeared in 5 straight ALCS, 3 WS, won an ALCS MVP, has 12 HR in the postseason including a walk off in a critical and momentum shifting game, all in their first five seasons:
Yordan Alvarez Not Harper, Judge, Ohtani, Trout. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I feel like the story on Yordan is completely different if he doesn't miss all but two games in 2020. That was peak boom, and he gets overlooked in favor of Tatis, Luis Robert etc. If he picks up where he left off in 2019, the view on him changes. His cards lost momentum.

This is a good point. He definitely lost momentum, and at the least opportune time to do so. But that ties into the overarching issue that the injury bug has affected him just enough to prevent him from having a full, memorable season. If he keeps doing what he’s done the past month—an OPS above 1.200–his time may very well be coming. Of course, a hobby craze these days is not as explosive as it once was. If Gunnar Henderson was having this huge second season three years ago (heck, even a year ago), his Sapphire rookies would be $400. Instead, raws and PSA 9’s are barely pushing $80. Yordan’s market won’t be reminding us of peak Soto anytime soon, but it should at least reach the upper echelon of the hobby as it is today (hopefully). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
