This man is out for blood. So many people hated on him end of last season. I’m loving this.

Oh and once again he gets the better of Tatum head to head.

38 and 12 assists in the W against the Knicks last night, after a 41 point game in the win over Boston Friday night. 5 out of 6 games with over 30 points to start the season.

Don, Love, and Dean Wade combined for 22 3’s made last night which is the most ever by 3 players in a single game.. crazy to think about. Mitchell and Love each with 8.

PKIPP,

Obviously I wasn't a watcher of much Utah for Mitchell's run there but was he ever playing this well?

Seems like the pressure is off and he's been fully unlocked

How does his optic holo sell for $50...not even that high pop.

Guess this Cleveland run hasn't done much to his cards yet.

Mitchell had often played this good, but it often felt like there was no confidence for the rest of the Jazz team and Mitchell seemed like he was usually carrying the load.

While former Jazz coach Quin Snyder was good I always felt there was something flawed with his system. The main thing Quin Snyder wasn't good at making adjustments, so Jazz would often blow 15, 20+ point leads and give many players, even scrub players on opposing teams new career highs. Jazz new coach Will Hardy is good at making adjustments.

Now Donovan Mitchell is with a team that overall look like have confidence (even without Darius Garland out for injury) and a coach who makes adjustments. This Cavs team with confidence seems to feed off in itself and gives Donovan even more confidence to play even better; as you say less pressure for him.

Right now Mitchell is leading the NBA in minutes per game.

That's great but it can't be kept up once Garland is back.

What's encouraging is how well he is shooting the ball: 49% from the field, 46% from 3. Hopefully he'll be able to get even more selective with his shots once the team is healthy.

Yes, but he's been a streaky player. Cleveland is the most balanced team he's played on, especially once Garland comes back. They have front court players who can finish inside and out as well. He never had that in Utah. Gobert had terrible hands and couldn't take advantage of smaller players down low.

Mitch won't keep averaging 32/7/5 but his efficiency should be the best of his career and he's just about to enter his prime.

He’s had his stretches. The bubble obviously. 2021 playoffs. Last year he was player of the month in December. There was a point in late 2021 season where he had 30 in 4 straight games including 40 back to back. And more that I’m definitely forgetting, those ones just off top.

But this just feels kinda different. He’s defending what seems to be a little better than the last few years, and playmaking wise he’s getting the chance to show off more. With Conley and Ingles in Utah it limited his chances in that regard, and having Clarkson who was a ball hog and has to dribble every time he touches the ball definitely hurt his assist #’s also.

Obviously the scoring should come as no surprise but even this feels different too. He’s not just settling, attacking the rim, dunking every game and not shying from contact, getting to the line.

Not having a big man that’s a non factor on offense clogging the paint is helping him big time.

As good as he's playing now, he's still a notch or two below that 2020 Bubble Series against the Nuggets. He and Jamal Murray both going supernova is one of the few good sports memories I have from that period.

It almost seems like it didn't happen because everything was so surreal back then but take a peek here:

Game 1: Mitchell 57/9/7 on 58% shooting- Murray went for 36/5/9 on 65%
Game 2: Mitchell 30/8 on 71% (86% from 3) in a blowout win
Game 4: Mitchell 51/4/7 on 56% (57%) - Murray 50/11/7 on 58% (60%)
Game 5: Mitchell 30/2/5 on 48% (50%) - Murray 42/8/8 on 65% (50%)
Game 6: Mitchell 44/5/6 on 56% (69%) - Murray 50/5/6 on 71% (75%)

USA Today MVP Ladder has Donovan Mitchell at #3

I'm sure once Garland gets back Mitchell's production and numbers may drop, but it will be a blessing in disguise that Mitchell won't be overworked, less stress on body, and lower risk of injury while saving energy throughout season for playoffs.

Hopefully this inspires JB to tinker with the rotation a bit so that Mitchell/Garland aren't sharing the court for the majority of their minutes. I know it goes against conventional thinking to not have your two best players on the court together at all times, but Garland can get just as hot as Mitchell and having at least one of them partially running with the 2's could be really good.

Obviously they would both start and be on the court for closeout time but I'm thinking staggering the rest periods. Maybe Mitchell comes out at 6 minutes left in the 1st. Garland comes out at 2 minutes left in the first. Mitchell comes back at 10 minutes in the 2nd followed by Garland at 6 minutes in the 2nd. If you can have even those 8 minutes with 1 of 2 on the floor per half, it allows both to be the alpha for parts of the game. That's still 16 minutes per half for each player, 32 per game (minimum) with 25% of those minutes being one or the other. If it's a close game in the 4th you go all out to close obviously but until you need it, is it necessary?

From the gitgo the plan has been to keep 1 of them on the court at all times, which means probably about 14-16 minutes a game where they don't overlap.

What'll really get interesting is when Rubio gets back. Options galore for JB.

100%

Glad Garland is back. I was frustrated with the way the offense was running throughout the game but when the game mattered the best player on the team, mr Mitchell took over. And he played amazing defense too. MVP convo.

IDK if I can say that based on tonight...

Mitchell and Garland each got 1 chance to ice the game (Regulation and OT), and the offense ran move through Garland when they shared the floor (as evidence by more points and 2x the assists). Plus minus trends this way too. And on defense, Allen sets the tone.

Regardless, I'm happy with what I'm seeing. I think we'll continue to see both of these guys get fed, with Garland running the show the majority of the time, and Mitchell getting the first call of the big shot. 6-1

Got my cheap Silhouette a few weeks ago. I’m happy. Plus, I’ve always liked the guy. Hope he continues to do what he’s doing.
