True facts. It’s nice seeing cards like that in the home of a collector.

Are you satisfied with your collection as-is or do you have plans to continue adding to it?

The journey is never over for a PC player collection. I think at this point, it would be tough for anyone to compete with my stuff in depth. That said, guys like pcptrade have me beat when it comes to individual high-end cards - which is totally fine. I may end up consolidating some cards upward later if Ohtani keeps doing what he does, just for the sake of completion.

Since it was PC, I just collected a lot of what I like. Back in 2019, it was a hilarious and lonely feeling to look up various pop report and see 80% of the cards in my slabcase. But hey, you're not a legit PC collector if you're not prepared to go down with the ship imo

I’m more of a football/hockey collector, but I do collect the White Sox. So I happened to be watching the game last night to see if Luis Robert is going to figure out this whole laying off bad pitches thing and I really liked what I saw from Ohtani.

Anyway, what’s a good Ohtani RC to own? I like auto’s, so is it pretty much the 2018 Topps Chrome auto? I’m looking to spend $1-$2k.

Here's where I have them:

#1 - Bowman Pitching
#2 - Heritage Low Real One (holding ball)
#3 - Bowman Batting
#4 - Heritage High Real One (with bat)
#5 - Topps Chrome (with bat)
#6 - Bowman Sterling
#7 - Brooklyn Collection
#8 - Topps Finest
#9 - Bowman's Best
...everything else

There is a substantial gap after #2, imo. Those cards were attached to some ridiculous hype. #1, #2, #4, #5 base, #8 were very tough to grade high on. Hope that helps.

Edit: here's a pic to shop from. Added in the finest mystery as well. I'd slot that between 7/8.

Thank you for such a complete list. Of those, I’ve seen #3 and thought that was the better looking card vs #5 which is what I was about to buy. I seem to want to default to Topps Chrome for MLB RC’s and Bowman for prospects only.

I’ll update with a mail day when I finish my buying spree!

Normally, it would be, but Ohtani did not have a 1st Bowman insignia since he entered as a MLB-ready rookie. I feel the order may be different if the pitching auto had a 1st bowman logo and the batting didn't. Topps chrome is a fine choice and was much more condition sensitive with the surface dimples/scratches. Bowman batting was 100% redemption so a gem isn't exactly a war story.

But in the NL he would automatically be a 2 way player - & an even more valuable one. (& the Chicago option would have paired him with Maddon, though I doubt that factored in.

My memory is that it was known that he would prefer a west coast team. Maybe there just weren’t close offers from the NL West.

Not that big a deal, just look forward to someone asking Ohtani about the final decision many years from now.

Was wondering if anyone knows the 2018 panini donruss optic print runs or relative scarcity of the holo, bronze, pink, purple, red/yellow and shock prizm parallels. (I don't normally buy non-licensed cards, but I seem to really like the Ohtani prizm parallels).

I found the following below from cardboard connection....
PARALLEL CARDS: Holo, Bronze, Pink, Purple, Red/Yellow, Shock, White Sparkles, Aqua #/299, Orange #/199, Blue #/149, Red #/99, Carolina Blue #/50, Black #/25, Gold #/10, Cracked Ice #/7 (FOTL), Green #/5, Gold Vinyl 1/1.
I know panini does not list odds or print runs, so I was hoping someone that opened a lot of product in 2018 could help me out.

Absolutely beautiful!

Any love for the Ginter auto RCs?
Or the Gypsy Queen auto, which is his 1st autographed RC?

Thanks guys.

For Ginter, I feel like the mini auto hurts the collectible value unless you're a big Ginter fan. They also forgot the RC logo which is another hit in the nuts that makes it drop out of the top options.

I actually like the GQ auto and would not have a problem if you wanted to swap it with rank #9 or 10. That said, GQ just doesn't have the same pedigree or exclusivity that the other sets have. That said, it's a nice looking card!

I didn't include transcendent (not really pack pulled) or sticker autos (cause they're yucky stickers).

One last note is that the quality of Ohtani's autograph has deteriorated greatly since his first release. His auto is meant to look like the Japanese kanji "夢" or "Dream." It really does look like it in the bowman pitching, heritage low and Topps Chrome, but it quickly devolves to a squiggly pattern after he had his TJS and then it turns to complete crap in 2019 (Sorry if you own any of these). If you have his early auto, I'd hold onto it - it will never be the same.

I'm a big fan of 1-4, dont like the chrome card at all, and like the sterling, finest and best autos from 2018 as well. Unfortunately I have none of them. I did however pick this guy up from ebay a month or 2 ago, 2018 Archives Fan Favorites. Yes it's Archives, but I love the 71 design, love Shohei's expression in the shot, and love the signature on this card. Unfortunately there are some white touches on some corners and I think the great majority of these have the same condition issues. What do yall think of my single 2018 Rookie Shohei auto? Think I paid about $225, and it was more of a PC decision than an investment one.

I like it! I have not seen one of those in a while. I am not a huge fan of the Fan Favorites in general, but this one works. I don’t think I’ve seen that picture used on any of his other cards which gives it an extra bump.

I like the '72 design and I'm right there in appreciating a unique image, but I have never seen Ohtani that happy on the field, lol. Maybe with a healthy year.

Out of all the mass amounts of product I ripped in 2018, this is the only Sho-auto I was lucky enough to pull(redemption). Not exactly a top tier product line, but I really like the look of the blue parallel with silver ink.

That's a great silver ink sig, many of them are too thick or smudged and the blue works! Cool image of Shohei as well.

Shohei was the guy I held back in 2018, sold off all my Soto and Acuna. Ripped a ton that year, lots of bowman, over 10 cases of topps update, stacks and stacks of topps chrome update megas.

Family life got rough and I made the decision to sell off my whole collection, including all the precious Ohtanis.

Fast forward to a couple months ago, I got back in. Started picking up some Shohei and very quickly his prices starting rising. I've got some more on the way but this is the majority of what I've been able to stash before this huge runup. I keep telling myself I just need to be happy with what I got and not mourn what I dont have now that prices have started to reflect his skill level and hobby potential.

^^ Nice Silver Ink Auto, Shohei was the one 2018 auto I never pulled myself

A little "through the years" shiny mail day:

That long stare down he gave Smith after getting hit in the thigh was pretty awesome, though. That's an attitude he wouldn't have displayed in the past - it's really good to see that confidence. Also helps he scored the winning run.

Is his 2018 Prizm rookie from Chronicles SP? I know most don't enjoy the non-logo stuff but was checking out different options and it seems like eBay doesn't have many listed.

I think they just didn't produce that much of Chronicles baseball in 2018.
