Defense matters in the long run.

We can all rip our undies with homer boners for the next five or six years but if the player is an anchor around the team's neck when it comes to defense then people are going to start looking at the player's career as a whole and attempt to project WAR out and the HOF-possibility talk starts.

If they're crap on defense then it starts to look kind of meh-ish. If they're Mookie Betts then it's looking really, really good. The first time that conversation happens and people gain that perspective the player's cards usually take a bump.

So for now, yeah, no big deal. But it'd be a lot cooler if he became great at defense.

His manager and teammates probably do. They look at the bigger picture. They are all in and added quite a bit in the off-season to speed up the process. If a player is getting one error a game... That's not good.

I understand card hypers tend to overlook certain things....but management sees everything. Hopefully he turns it around...but just saying nobody cares isn't correct. The people that matter do. Extra defense practice likely to come soon. Gotta get those stopped.

Agree. I mean we are on a baseball card forum. Of course the coach and GM care. Im saying nobody in the hobby cares today that he didn't throw the ball properly last night. Long term it will matter, but it's literally one game.

Yeah... 7 errors in 6 games played.

The 2 errors last night led to 4 runs being scored by the Dodgers.

It's a concern.

Yea, last year the defense was great with very few errors. He’s clearly pressing right now and he’s in his head after signing that huge deal. I give it two weeks before he just settles in.

Anyone hyperfocusing on the errors right now, knowing he started the year with a shoulder injury and had a great year defensively last season, is probably missing the bigger picture. He's pretty clearly trying to force the play right now as well. He's 22... once he settles down and if his shoulder maintains he should be fine.

No one with half a brain should be worried about his defense longer term.

You keep aligning yourself with a franchise that has won like 1 playoff series in the last 20 years, like they are smart, or proven they are good at what they do... good luck with that defense.

What im saying is taking a shot/chance on a guy is fine. But to do it cause “the padres like the guy he must be good and will pan out long term” is confirmation bias.

Totally different organization than what you are comparing to. Owners are building a winning team and a lot of people like it, especially if you are a baseball fan. Go Padres!

The bat will be fine. His first 150 games have a 297avg, 41HR, 100RBI, 27SB.

The glove is still a little streaky, but I’m still convinced you can’t get uptight about the start knowing he was playing hurt for the first 5-6 games
