The Vides cards come with raised surfaces on the lines he added. I guess that makes his cards unique?

When I'm not working, I'll post why the title of this thread was justified at the time I wrote it.

Since then, a plethora of attractive cards have come out to where, clearly, the cards are not as ugly as 1991 Fleer. For example, today's Jackie is a really nice card by Blake.

However, some remain stupid AF. . . the first Gwynn and Frank Thomas... the Koufax. . . the puffy paint cards. . . (today's Rivera) ... the Ugly as Sin $400 Trout card. . .

Just 'cause it's valuable doesn't mean it's not ugly.
Except everyone was trying, and maybe are still trying, to point out that art is subjective. Your opinion does not equal fact (something stay at home protesters seem to not know, but I digress). Even if you thought that many cards are ugly, that was and still is, just your opinion.

For example, the ugly as sin card you're referring to is top 3 best so far in my opinion and has nothing to do with value. Had it been about value I would have bought all 4 the seller had for $30, rather than just 1 for myself.

I imagine many people love Matt Taylor's Jeter, meanwhile I think it's meh and did not and will not get one, that's how subjective things work.

Kind of a fun stat, I posted on FB group that I received a shipping notification on my 100 card order and the weight was 21.4 lbs. Someone responded that the whole 400 card set will weigh approx. 85 lbs. This made me chuckle

I'm not going to debate it again, but my opinion is that it's not raised, but rather a 'stamped in' effect. Check the highlights in the Rickey - white on both sides like it's burrs on a divot.

Vides is playing with finish -- the black is matte, where the finish on the rest of the card is glossy.

Topps just tweeted it's "printed in matte-black foil, stamped on top of the cardstock"

I don't think we were debating it; it may be a reading comprehension issue. Topps said the ink was on top of the card.

Maybe it'll be recessed into the card, but . . . my money's on puffy.

Of course it's my opinion! This entire thread is about ART! Everyone is going to have a different opinion regarding ART!

For example, I watched a bit of Blake on youtube last night. Personally, I don't think spray painting baseball cards takes talent and/or is art. What Blake does with his other products certainly does take talent. But that's me. That's my opinion. I'm not going to pay gobs of money for a banana taped to a wall. But others differ with my opinion. And that's the beautiful thing about this country is that we can differ.

But this thread was created as a joke because I saw Topps hawking the stupidest looking baseball cards and calling them masterpieces.

I still hold true to the belief that if the set continued down that pathway, the value would not have come. But artists like Blake and others with talent showed that this set is not a joke and caused people to want to collect it. So, what happened? The first week of cards that were SPed became in demand... hence what you have now.

This is the undisputable proof (which nobody really needed at this point) that this thread is awesome.

And I'm reading this as I'm savoring an excellent Belgian beer : my world is in perfect harmony right now. I know it won't last, but I'm enjoying the present.

You nailed it! The cards you didn’t like, sucked and the cards you do like are now bringing up all the value of the cards you didn’t like!! That is totally what’s happening dude!

Blake, I was just thinking about and looking forward to your Frank Thomas card and have a suggestion. I'm not sure if you are aware, but there was an error version of the card that was missing his name on the front. That card is extremely sought after and iconic. Think it would be really cool for you to use the no name version for your art. Just a thought.

Nice! Wasn't sure if he actually knows about baseball cards or just somehow randomly got involved in the project.

I collected a ton as a kid - got everything from 85-95. Then fell out of the hobby for a long time, and my love of collecting was re-ignited when I brought in for Project 2020.

Anyhow, I did research on all the cards in the set, and trying to work in some fun easter eggs. The no-name Frank is one of those examples (though much more overt than other easter eggs).

I appreciate you mentioning it though. It's certainly a fun idea!

The first version was a no name card.

Yes, technically it doesn't have his name. But based on, well everything about that card, it is impossible to tell if it is consciously no name or just a coincidence with the style. Blake's style can actually do the concept service.

I suggested that Don C and Mister Cartoon are both not currently working on this project over the weekend a member told me both had cards dropping this week. Seeing tomorrow are Brett and Thomas and neither appear to be those two, are we sure they haven't dropped out? Perhaps Topps is struggling to figure out how to get those two to respond, or just do not want to release that neither are still in? Still scratching my head on why they would ask those two guys to do this project when both are clearly way to involved in other projects. Mister Cartoon hopefully has another card coming, could care less about Don C as he is a fashion designer...
