topps chrome rookies and refractors
prizm silvers
upper deck nba autos, not the college. other than prizm i dont see panini holding value and by then i think another company will come along and we will see the end of them.

Kaboom! Kids like them, Stephen and Lebron are always included, and once upon a time you could pull these out of blasters from Target and Walmart. I love Kabooms especially 2015-16 and have a decent collection of them so this might be a little wishful thinking on my part.

I’ll be interested to see where these go. I don’t really like them, but I think the Downtown insert is super cool, and they’re another love it/hate it type insert. I do think having a combination of rarity and uniqueness are what will stick long term, as other posters have mentioned, and the Kabooms fit the bill.

I wonder what kind of oddball inserts that don’t get much attention might become popular later on, something like a License to Dominate.

PMGs shot up because they were really the first "hard to pull" serial #d card in basketball. Find something else with a unique aspect to it (maybe Gala RCs, maybe Optic velocity parallels, etc) and hope you threw the dart on the right one.

If average people are priced out of an NT RPA, but can afford a Prizm silver, that's where the most room for growth is. If it's Optic vs Prizm, there's the room for growth. Flawless vs NT/Immac. Gala vs Revolution galactics. Nobody has the magic answer, but it's almost certainly going to be something that nobody cares all that much about today.

This is a good take. I tend to feel the same about Optic, there’s just too much room for growth in my opinion, and looking at the mocks for this season’s product it at least checks the box for good design.

I totally agree with you on the Optic. They are currently so overlooked.

I'll chime in with my two cents. I agree with many of the other thoughtful responses in this thread.

- The flawless diamond set is nice because of a low print run and manageable checklist with HOFs mixed in. The difficult thing for me with any set with parallels is that I always want the next rung up. For example, if I collected 2012-13 flawless /20 set, then I would immediately want the emerald /5 and/or the diamond /1 (which is obviously unattainable). I really like theeminence base set, but can't settle on whether to chase the /10 or the /5 golds.

- Prizm obviously has a strong following, but it feels too ubiquitous and the endless parallels are tough for me to get excited about. It also has too much of a retail flavor, which detracts from the exclusivity / "thrill of the chase" factor. One of the neat things about a PMGs / rubies is that they are so difficult to pull.

- Revolution galactics have a nice look to them and small print run. I would prefer a serial numbered run, but it's not a dealbreaker for me. The downside for me is that the galactic notation is applied to both the base set and the inserts. It's all a bit overwhelming. I also wish the galactic's were a bit easier to distinguish from the base set and the other parallels.

- From Downtown has an appealing and distinctive design. I'm not sure what the print run is, but they do feel very easy to find on eBay. If there was a serial number (maybe /50 or /150), I would probably be more enthusiastic.

- RPAs are obviously the gold standard of rookie cards, but there doesn't seem to be a strong demand to collect RPA sets (vs. the obviously incredible demand for singles of the best players and hot rookies).

At the end of the day, I think it's going to be something that ticks all of the following boxes: (i) exclusivity (a serial print run is helpful vs. an SSP perception), (ii) distinctive design (needs to look different from the endless Panini products produced each year) and (iii) strong checklist (as noted above, I like the Eminence, but I feel like any checklist without LeBron is lacking - for the same reason, I can't get behind any set Panini set with autos).

This leads me to the Gala base set. Obviously people love the Gala rookies and I have picked up a handful of my favorite Nuggets players, but long term I can't see anyone getting jazzed up about a Trey Lyles /8 unless you are PCing him or love the Nuggets. However, I do think the Gala base set for both 2014-15 and 2015-16 have a lot of potential. For me they check a lot of the boxes:
1) Each year has a distinctive design (I personally love the b/w pictures, refractor finish and the prominence of the jersey number). I acknowledge that they have a polarizing design, but I think that is true of many of the highly sought after 90s cards.
2) Both sets lack parallels which makes things a bit more manageable in my opinion.
3) Limited print / exclusivity - only /79 for 2014-15 and /99 for 2015-16 (the football 2016 set is only /49!)
4) Strong but manageable checklist (including LeBron and HOFs in the 15-16 version). If I were Panini, I would have actually cut 5-10 players from the 2014-15 set and 10-15 from the 2015-16 set

I'm not an expert like others on here, so I expect some strong (and in many instances valid) disagreement.

Happy new year!

Disclaimer: I am putting together both the 2014-15 and 2015-16 base sets, so I am not an entirely unbiased observer.

Curious what you guys think of the long term value of this set and card in particular. On card auto and seem to be sp(been told the print run is /25). Think these will hold up/be sought after in the future?

That was part of 14-15 SP Authentic which was UDs last basketball release. The college uniforms hurt the value of these a bit but I think they are pretty intriguing long-term. Stephen Curry is a pretty good player to own in the long-term, also.

Thanks for the insight. Did not know that was UDs final b-ball release. Hate they didn’t have the nba liscense that year. Are you buy chance able to confirm the print run on the gold autos? Can’t find anything concrete anywhere.

Can't find anything on print run sorry. Looks like there have been around 15 completed sales of the card so /25ish might be a good guess though.
