Eduardo with another monster start. Please get a nice return for him before the deadline.

Closing in on .500 - are they exceeding expectations? Meeting them? Falling short?

I thought they'd lose 110 games so gotta say they are exceeding somehow despite Tork being a zero and Manning/Skubal/Mize all out. Doesn't feel stable or make a lot of sense.

They're overachieving like crazy. Their expected W/L is 16-28. Team has two regulars with an OPS over .700 and two good starting pitchers.

This is basically a re-run of Hinch's first season.

Agreed - overachieving. Still better than the alternative.

I guess at times its better to be lucky than good. In this case the Tigers are fortunate to be in the worst division within baseball and have a chance at division contention come the trade deadline. So, what’s the maximum games back where you’re sellers vice buyers?

Sellers no matter what. This is not a real playoff team even if they hang around because the division is a joke.

8-4 in the division now.

But the question made me finally get around to looking up Lorenzen’s contract - a one year deal.

It took me a few weeks, earlier, to notice that Edwin Rodriguez has an opt-out this year. He has been back down to Earth a little his last couple starts, but maybe both could still go.

Eduardo's not going anywhere if they actually have a chance to win the division (lol). Unfortunately that seems to be the case and they can't give him the QO since he's already received it so they're gonna get nothing for him.

For me it all depends on the offers for Eduardo even if we are still somewhat in the division race at the deadline. If there is a controllable hitter offered that Harris likes we should make that deal.

I'm not arguing if they should or not, but they're 2 games out of 1st and it's almost June. This is a poverty division this team could actually win it.

Our luck they’ll be first in the division and not sell at the deadline then still end up in 3rd place at the end of the year.

I was mentally prepared for this to be nothing more than Miggys fairwell tour. Really didn’t expect them to compete in the (awful) division.

Like, I dunno, Zach McKinstry? Quite the pick-up there.

I wouldn’t have bet a penny at any odds that the two Zachs on the 40 man would be leading the team in OPS.

It would be incredibly foolish to hold onto Eduardo if they get legit offers for him. A 30 year old pitcher having BY FAR his best year who also happens to have an opt-out after the season is exactly the kind of guy they should be trading.

That idiot Avila held onto Matt Boyd beyond his expiration date. Don't do the same with Rodriguez.

Only one game below .500 and a game back of 1st. This could get interesting!

Third worst run differential in all of baseball and only two losses back of first!

Personally, I don’t think being a .500 team is overachieving. AJ Hinch is proving to be a heck of a motivator and is maximizing the talent on this team.

Now if they finish several games over .500 and in playoff contention or make a wild card, then yeah overachievement for sure.

With that said though, the tigers should definitely look to sell at the deadline. Scott Harris can’t make the same mistakes as Al Avila and miss out on chances to maximize the return on assets.

Let’s build for multiple years of contention and not just this one.

You don't think being .500 when you were expected to lose 100+ games is overachieving?!?!

No, because personally I wasn’t expecting them to lose 100 games.

2022 was expected to play out similarly to how 2023 is playing out. Contributions from free agent signings (Rodriguez and Baez) and breakouts from prospects were supposed to elevate the team to at least a .500 record. Unfortunately injuries and poor play sank the 2022 season.

A good chunk of the roster that was expected to get to .500 last year is back this year so why should the preseason predictions be any different? If Skubal and Manning comeback and contribute middle of the rotation stuff the rest of the season this should be a .500 team minimum in baseballs weakest division.
