Is there any purpose for battling at a gym that is your same team? I joined a gym and then I battled the same gym. I don't think I was supposed to do that....lol. Ended up defeating my own creature and then won the last 2 battles, but my creature had 2 HP left. Then I had to revive it or whatever.

Went on a pretty short walk with mom and our dog, turned out to be a pretty good one! Caught a 231 oddish plus a couple other decent non-pidgeys I will use for candy, and my 2k egg turned into a 214 zubat. Not what I would have picked, but it seems like a high cp out of a 2k

Think I'm finally going to bite the bullet and spend some money on the game. At level 22, I won't get a free incubator until level 25 and I only have one at the moment. Really want to be able to buy a couple and hatch eggs faster.

Now I'm just wondering which bundle to get

I caught 3 magikarps today and hatched 1. Thats the best day I've had. Right up there with catching a Dratini and Kabuto in the same day. Otherwise just drowzees all day long

I haven't paid out yet, but I feel like I will be at some point. I think the $20 bundle seems like the best value unless you're devoting hours per day to the game. 2500 Pokecoins can get you 8 Lucky Eggs for exp gaining, 3 Egg Incubators, 2 Bag Upgrades, 2 Pokemon Storage upgrades for 1350, which leaves you 1150 to spend however else you choose. Personally I'd do another Storage upgrade or two, and upgrade the 8 Lucky Eggs to 25 Lucky Eggs which would cost you 1150 and you still have 200 pokecoins left for an emergency.

Doesn't sound like a bad plan at all actually

Right now I'm discovering how everyone is cheating, and how pretty much there is little to no consequence

Yeah one dude is controlling seven gyms by himself, and each of his Pokemon are 1500cp and up. Not thrilled about that haha my highest is like 560cp and I've had the game about four days

HP matters. Hit points is the amount of health you have. So the more HP you have the better. A way to raise them is powering up, although I wouldn't suggest powering up. But you can play your game the way you want to

Lol I know what hp is I have all the games bud, I just wasn't sure if it actually mattered in this game. I feel like my Pokemon are fainting very easily even at gyms where the match ups are relatively close

There is a whole bunch of factors in determining how good a pokemon is beyond just CP. Like the two attacks they have. More complex stuff is apparently out there (IV?) that I'm not even really sure about

Pretty sure there is a Squirtle nest. Also I think I found a Clefairy spawn point, but not 100% sure (I did find 2 Clefairys). Lots of Nidorinas. Drowzes. I'd definitely go back there.

Yeah I got frustrated trying to take one of the gyms today and my cp was pretty close the whole way, but I just got slaughtered. The moves have to be the reason or something I just don't get it lol

When you're taking on Gyms, are you paying attention to what types of Pokemon you're facing in what order, what what type of moves you're using.

For instance, if the first Pokemon you fight in a gym is a Pidgeot, it's a flying type so you'll want to start with a Pokemon that does 2X damage to Flying Pokemon. That means you'll want to choose one of your Pokemon with a move that does Ice, Electricity, or Rock damage.

Here's the chart I always reference before taking a Gym

Yeah man, gyms are tough. I beat a gym today with a 1400 CP pokemon, held it for like 2 hours than lost it. Even if you happen to capture a gym, chances are it won't last very long. At least that's been my experience anyways

Powering up uses stardust. Most save stardust for much higher levels in the game.

As you gain higher and higher levels, you will keep finding stronger and stronger pokemon in the wild. If I had power upped my pokemon before, I pretty much wasted all that stardust because every pokemon I find now at my current level is much, much stronger than previous found pokemon.

For example, I power upped a voltorb a couple of times at a low level. I powered him up enough to max out the CP for that current level. But I essentially wasted that stardust in powering up that voltorb because I find 3x stronger voltorbs now compared to the one I had power upped at my lower level

Makes sense. Is the Stardust used for anything else other than powering up?

What level are you now?

As of now, it is just used to power up. Each time you power up, I believe it costs more stardust to do so, so it can really add up quickly.

I am level 22 right now with 138k Stardust. Planning on using that stardust on a rare, strong pokemon whenever that time comes.

Yes, you can level up your own team's gym by battling it. Leveling up, allows your team to place more pokemon at that gym.

Gyms 101.

All Gyms start from neutral (gray). When a team claims it (by placing one of their pokemon there, it turns the color of that team and becomes a level 1 gym (although I've noticed a lot of time, they start at level 2 for some reason).

Gym level = number of pokemon that can be stationed there defending it.

When battling an opposing team's gym, you get to choose 6 of your pokemon to take into battle. Choose them based on what you are fighting (or just choose your 6 highest CP). Due to this "pick 6" nature of attacking, its very hard to defend a gym. essentially it's a 6 vs X fight where X = the number of defending pokemon. At least in my area, I've only seen a gym higher than level 6 once and I've never seen a gym stay one color for more than about 6hrs. For example, there is one guy in my town (its a pretty small town) who usually owns about 6 gyms in town. He has multiple lvl 26 accounts on multiple teams and battles them against each other to level up. Last night, I was able to take out several of his gyms that were defended by 2-3 1500-2000CP guys with my meager 6 all less than 1150. Granted he just came and took them right back but I was surprised how easy it was to take over.

To fight just repeatedly tap the screen to do a normal attack. Once your blue "power bar" (no idea what it's really called) fills, you can tap and hold to do your secondary (usually more powerful) attack. Note that the powerful attack takes a second or two to execute so sometimes its not really worth it. At any time during a battle (including when you see your opponent start his secondary attack), you can choose to switch pokemon using the arrows button. It's not like baseball, you can constantly switch back and forth if you want to. The only time they can't be chosen is if they die (don't worry, they aren't permanently dead).

If you win or lose the battle, as long as you defeated at least one of the pokemon there, you will get some XP and the gym will lose XP (usually there is a 10:1 ratio of personal XP vs Gym XP won/lost). The more you beat, the more you win (and it loses).

In order to take over a gym, you have to repeatedly battle it until it has zero XP left. The battles get somewhat easier each time since as it is losing XP, it is also losing levels and defending pokemon get sent home (weakest first). Also, you gain knowledge of which pokemon to choose to fight which defenders. Once it's at zero XP, it becomes neutral again and can be captured by whomever places a pokemon there first (no "tagging" system for whomever beat it).

In between pokemon battles, you can use your potions to heal. If a pokemon died in the battle, you have to revive (using a revive item) it before you can heal or you have to wait a period of time for it to revive on it's own. Seems to be a couple hours I think.

When battling your own team's gym, you only get to pick 1 pokemon to fight instead of 6 and based on the number of pokemon defenders you manage to beat, both you and the gym gain XP. Once it gains a new level, it will open up a spot where you (or someone else closeby) can put another defender at the gym.

The advantage to holding a gym is that you get some meager bonus coins (10 per ~22hrs per defender but its the only way to earn coins in game) plus some stardust.
-edit- figured out a bit more about how this works today.
every 22hrs you are allowed to collect rewards and it doesn't matter at all how long your pokemon have been at a gym, only that they are there when you collect the award. So, drive around town taking over and/or placing your pokemon at friendly gyms all at once, then go into the shop and click the reward icon to collect. Do that once a day. It doesn't matter which pokemon you put into gyms, only the number of them you have in gyms. Of course if you do this late at night (or once school starts back up, during the school day), it will be easier to keep guys in gyms long enough to make it all the way around town.

I just hit level 20 tonight and had about 65K saved up. I hatched an Aerodactyl (sp?) last weekend and although he wasn't all that great (799cp), I decided to waste 20K leveling him up tonight (he came with 25candies) so he is now just shy of 1200. I figured I probably won't ever find another one and I was itching to spend some stardust since I haven't spent any since about level 6 (powering up wheedles no less).
