Well I'm excited because Sho has officially cracked the BWAR all-time top 1000. Will be fun to watch him work his way up the list. Currently at 983.

Can anyone explain to me why rookie debut cards are not popular in general? What year did the RD cards first appear? I didn't start collecting again until covid. Seems strange that collectors wouldn't like cards with a photo from the player when they actually debut. I actually really like Ohtani RD cards.

agree, and it's a nice hitting image too.

Because starting in ‘14(?) Topps decided to issue a redundant 2nd flagship card with the top guys noting the rookie debut date. If they were “the” only RC and had the RD date it wouldn’t be an issue. As it stands it’s considered a 2nd flagship RC(whether issued in the same series or subsequent series) and carries significant disdain compared to the original. Like an otherwise attractive human with a large growth on their face.
The hitting image of Ohtani is the first time I can recall an RD card garnering any noticeable interest on its own.

So I get the disdain for a 2nd RC (even thought the RC logo is on every topps card once their RC designated year including inserts). But I would think getting a card with a genuine photo from their rookie debut (not a photoshoped RC card) would actually be a desirable thing. That was my biggest point. You know the photo is from the players actual debut.

it all started in 2012 when the pumpers pushed the 2012 Update RD Harper as his Rookie Card (IGNORING his ASG Card in the same set because for some reason Topps forgot to put the RC Logo on it)

his Rookie Card is in 2012 Series 2 packs.

eta: RD's started in 2012. They are more of a subset card than anything else.

I personally don't want 2018 Topps Update Ohtani that much at all (pitching or RD) because he was in series 2.

totally understandable as his Rookie Card and parallels are in S2

his Update stuff is a nice consolation prize in the Juan Soto release

Ah yes, 2012. Thanks for the correction E. I was out from 2009-2016

Not surprising it originated in BH's RC year. Much like the RC logo on inserts did in Soto/Acuna/Ohtani's. More chances to hit a "rookie card" of the game's most promising young players.

In general, the hobby doesn’t view them as a true rookie card. Rookie debut cards are seen as more of an insert. Under certain circumstances, they sometimes become semi valuable (Ohtani’s RD is actually more valuable than most because he’s batting vs pitching in S2/Update). Another example was the 2019 Tatis rookie debut (before the PED suspension). It was sought after because his base flagship rookie was horizontal and fielding and his rookie debut card was batting and vertical.

Which is weird because in theory it's an image from their first game. If anything the rd should be the one true rc.
