Yeah, I just read about the deferred salary, which it says was his idea so we could remain competitive in FA, but the deal still makes me uncomfortable.

Yes. And with his worldwide popularity and marketability, the Dodgers will earn more than the $70M/year they are paying Shohei - Shohei will pay for his own contract, and maybe for Yoshinobu Yamamoto's contract too.

**From ESPN:

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/...year-700m-deal

The deal does not include any opt-outs, a source told ESPN. Another source said "the majority" of Ohtani's salary will be deferred in order to mitigate what the Dodgers are charged toward their competitive balance tax payroll on a yearly basis, giving them more freedom to add to their payroll over the life of Ohtani's contract. The deferrals, according to the source, were Ohtani's idea.

"This is a unique, historic contract for a unique, historic player," Nez Balelo, Ohtani's agent at CAA, said in a statement, adding: "Shohei is thrilled to be a part of the Dodgers organization. He is excited to begin this partnership, and he structured his contract to reflect a true commitment from both sides to long-term success."

Wow, my favorite team has fairly quickly gone from almost never getting the big free agents to regularly landing players from the highest echelon.

Sure, it'll be $100 parking, $20 hot dogs, and $30 beers at Dodger Stadium, but that's OK. Dodgers are good about letting you bring food in when you go, and if not, most of us have pretty nice TVs by now.

Exciting times!

Anyone remember last year when one of the clown players on the Angels scoffed that the Dodgers have a vegan as their leadoff hitter (referring to Mookie Betts) and the Angels have Babe Ruth.

Now I guess the Dodgers have a vegan and Babe Ruth.

Jeff Passan
I’m goin to explain why Shohei Ohtani's $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers will not equal $700 million in terms of MLB accounting or the present-day value of the deal.
When money in a contract is deferred, the competitive-balance tax number
- the luxury tax — is discounted. With a source saying a "majority" of Ohtani's contract is deferred, the discount could be significant. Typically, a CBT number is the average annual value of a deal — in this case $70 million. But depending on the size and length of the deferrals, Ohtani's CBT number is likelier to wind up in the $40-50 million-a-year range, an enormous benefit for the Dodgers.
The deferrals also affect the net present value of the deal. There's a rule

His career numbers in interleague games.... he'll be playing these teams WAY more often starting in 2024.

16 Home Runs in 126 games. .848 OPS

He's played in a bunch of meaningless games the last 6 years. He's only gonna hit 20 HRs next year. Dodgers fans will be looking to trade him by mid 2025

It looks like it was from Fax Sports - fake quote.

Damn, I really liked Vivas. I was really hoping he wouldn’t be part of this deal. Sweeney won’t amount to anything.

Dodgers probably include Sweeney in a trade. Dodgers still need pitching and an outfielder. Lux and Rojas in the infield.

I have long wondered how much a team like the Dodgers could just ignore whatever penalties come from the tax...losing draft picks, paying overage penalties, etc and still field a good team and have a strong farm system. They have picked pretty late in the draft for a long time now and still seem to be able to find enough talent.

Question Is Walker Buehler going to start the season in the rotation or on DL?
He had his surgery in September 2022. How long does it take to recover typically?
It’s crazy how the Dodgers rotation has imploded. One suspended Sex offender whom the Dodgers still paid and lost a part of their starting rotation. One Domestic Violence offender who obviously was affected by what he was doing. Kershaw now unable to pitch until midseason and he’s a free agent. May and Gonsolin injured. Buehler with TJ surgery.
What is up with the pitching coach/trainer

Buehler should be ready barring a set back. He was trying to ramp up for September/October but shut down when I think they realized he wouldn't get there. Pitching is a question mark but if they say sign Yamamoto and then move Busch and some prospects for Burnes or Glasnow, it starts looking pretty strong.

Glasnow please

I also have quite a bit of faith in their young pitchers going forward. Miller looks to have #1 potential, Pepiot was spectacular the last 6 weeks or so and then there’s Sheehan, Stone, Grove and a few others. If they add 2 strong guys through FA/ trades I think they will be in a great position. If not, they could still win the division by 10-15 games with a middling rotation.

Yeah that’s the heavy rumor.

We have a lot of strong prospects basically blocked. Time we made use of them. Getting a strong glove and decent bat in Arozarena plugs an outfield hole and Glassnow…I’m not sure. Isn’t he perpetually injured?

I gotta get my Glasnow Autos to PSA stat. Arozarena would be just a ridiculous add-on. The man alone has a huge fan base, like an entire country and performs on another level under the lights.

I don't like the Glasnow (glass arm) trade at all. We should not be looking to dump young arms like Pepiot, but building around them.
