You're right it doesn't. But there were 2 recent legit sales of $12,000 also. I know it doesn't set the market but what got me riled up is I'm being accused of lying when I have written proof and I just don't want to out a good buyer from a high end negotiation. I've offered to have a 3rd party look at it to verify but I'm not serving up someone's id on here just to prove a point. That is not what is happening. VCP doesn't even track star cards. The fact is there are plenty of people that like and want the cards and then there are members here who are butt hurt because of something completely unrelated (90s inserts) when people were shilling Natsturner and others that think it's happening again. It's not the same thing. But noone wants to listen to reason or logic. As it's been said many times, if there were so many out there and the presses were running wide open then why isn't there more cards graded in the pop report of a set where nobody wants raw cards? I mean you have to grade them to sell them for decent money. And yet, Jordan the most popular player, has around 500 cards graded. There are more gem mint fleer rookies than there are total graded 101's. And yet, people act like star is just so plentiful and easy to find and they made so many of them over and over. It's ludicrous.

I don't think anyone is specifically pointing out skepticism on Star 101 Jordans. The drama starts when you see this quick pop up posts trying to pimp a card selling for record prices then suddenly get a bunch of attention from guys looking to buy and sell. Seriously? How else would you treat a topic like this beside a hype and sell?

YOu seriously think as a smart buyer you wouldn't want such type of attention that would warrant any extra activity for the card you are looking to buy at what you consider decent prices. Yet its the opposite. Here we are in a thread talking about insane record breaking prices and the same few guys asking to put in buys. Does that seem logical to you? put in request to buy after record breaking prices and claim the card is not done moving yet? Who in their right mind goes out pimping a card to pay more by hyping it even more? Unless of course there is another agenda behind it.

If youre in the market to sell one, kudos to you. If youre in the market to buy one, good luck to you. But if youre in the market to buy them at steal prices, I question why any of you are here trying to hype crazy sale prices? Doesn't that work against your logic to pick them up quietly and low prices?

Celtics showed us his 8.5 that had the best sub-grades of any XRC that I've personally seen. That 10 surface grade for the 1st card in the team bag is just insane.
The paranoia on these threads are comical to say the least, but please do keep it up, it is great entertainment.

6Celtics33, you know the Jordan isn't the Star rookie I want that you own though, your Sir Charles needs a new home.
Haha, sorry man, can't do it

Not sure how that insinuates "their own gain"??

I think you are reaching on all these. Two collectors can have a conversation and one can offer his opinion on where prices are headed without it being some plot to manipulate the market.

To each their own. If you are naive to think there is no agenda to hyping cards, that is your call!. When was the last time 2 sales cemented the market value of anything?

Yeah fair enough on JPayne saying he wanted one "someday" and the same Jpayne offering to trade for one now. But me telling a guy who already bought one he made a wise choice is a far reach on me pumping the market. What I'm basing that on is the steady increase of prices over the past few years and the fact that it's just the most popular athlete ever's most rare and valuable rookie card. Hardly a giant leap.

I do agree that is happening and there are shady people in the hobby. I'm just telling you that's not the case here. I'm not naive at all. 2 sales don't cement the market of anything but a few months ago this same conversation and argument was taking place when a few sales in the 7500-9000 price range took place, everyone freaked out and accused others of pumping the market and yet here we are, new high prices. You'd think eventually everyone would wise up and only pay what blowout thinks the cards are worth which apparently is what $4,000 for an 8.5? Because that was the 2011 price?

It's sick to me that most every single card we collect, rip from wax, keep from our childhood, etc has lost value and everyone laughs and talks and jokes about that. Hey remember when the beckett said my donruss canseco rookie was $100? Those were good times. But then something actually increases for once and it's like the world is ending. What are we doing in this hobby?

This site needs more Star threads, good job Starman101. I'll take discussions over 80's era basketball cards/ or style of game for that matter over anything produced today.

JasonM32, so I guess it is safe to assume all of the threads about Panini products are phony boom markets pumped up for the wax gamblers to try to make something for their own gain-----that is until the next 10k pack comes out. Then the process starts all over again. A product that is over 30 years old doesn't need a "phony market boom" to help people "gain" something from these cards. I don't remember the price of Star team sets/packs from the 80's but I know they were less than a buck a pack....and the people you are accusing of doing the pumping have owned unopened packs for years.

To go inside the mind of a millennial would make for an interesting trippy day.

First off
i have two star 101 - both are 6.5
One subs total to 32 - one raised corner kills it

Here is a link to an auction from yesterday for a BGS 7 that sold for 3675
Yes 3675 for a BGS 7
1984 85 Star Basketball 101 Michael Jordan RARE RC Rookie HOF BGS 7 w 9 5 | eBay

I also bought my 2 BGS 6.5 2 years back -0 both about 1k a piece.

There are so few graded versions - all the millennials are going to start wanting them soon...

I know you're not Abra, I was talking about pingbling. He openly accused me of lying. He apologized but I just don't think that's ok. I mean I'd like to be able to defend myself or at the very least earn the reputation as a liar if I"m going to be seen as one anyway.

No comment on Wilt.... I've exhausted myself on that one

But I did draft Shawn Kemp in our all time draft so you should probably vote for me when the time comes. My team is monstrous.

Im not contesting the sales of the card being at $12k each. What I am saying is that 2 recent sales do not reflect a true market value when number of transactions is too small of a sample.

There was an article written on that person who bough the BGS 9.5 Lebron exquisite for just under $100k. He literally stated that overpaying the valuation on an investment does 2 things. It creates the attention needed to protect an investment and secondly it leaves a mark for people to talk about. Both of which contribute to notoriety of the investment. He then goes on to state that he will continue to do the same for other pieces that he adds to his collection.

This same process is used when art goes up for auction. It literally needs to make new record breaking prices each time a piece is sold to garner enough attention and leave a mark so that the next time it comes up on the market, it has legs to surpass last selling price.

Im not question to the legitimacy of the sale. Im aruging the ambiguity of the sales anomaly.

Two sales don't cement the market value for anything. No one is saying they do. There is an agenda on 99% of the posts about cards here. Big value cards tend to have some people looking to protect their investment but that does not mean there are nefarious plots and groups of people moving the same cards around to pump prices.

My comments were definitely not intended to be a shot at you, or any one particulate person really. I think the value of Star basketball cards are being manipulated. I think that the value of vintage basketball as a whole is being manipulated. Basketball has been the sole focus of my collecting for more years than I care to mention and I think that something screwy is going on. That's all I'm saying.

I find it odd you think vintage basketball is being manipulated. Compared to other sports, i feel it's still criminally undervalued. Bird/Magic, Wilt, Julius, Russell, Moses, Pistol Pete, Kareem...all these rookies can be had for peanuts in decent grades.

The baseball side of things has been booming. All HOF rookies are selling for record prices. As an avid Mantle collector, I can't find a nicely centered card without paying a record high these days.

It's possible vintage may just be catching the eye of a lot of basketball fans that aren't into the new stuff or players. Basketball has a much smaller selection to choose from that say baseball in the vintage market.

Nice card. Very nice. It looks better than 9's I've seen and it's probable the prospective buyer made the offer knowing it's likely the best 8.5 out there and potentially worthy of a bump. I've done this on cards before and that precisely how huge record sales happen.

Does that mean all 8.5's are worth 15k? Absolutely not. It means this particular card that represents the absolute pinnacle of the grade commanded a handsome and well deserved premium.

Both of you are hypocrites. In one sentence you protect your 80s MJs and claim fame, then you try and dig at current cards and insinuate fraud. It just goes to add more relevance to the agenda to pump, hype then sell your pieces.

Good luck. Im looking forward to your big sales in the future once you find the person to dupe!! Hey...its just money right?
