Glad it's a no buy card day for me.

Though, it would have been nice if Amed Rosario / Dominic Smith home run in same game would have become a Topps Now card.
But then again, probably not good making a card when their team lost.

Well, I did outline a way to do this.
http://www.blowoutforums.com/showpos...ostcount=11830

Are these sellers selling every base card or are these the only cards they are offering? My scenario would allow sellers to purchase cards at $2 each. If their shipping costs are $2.99, then can probably break even.

I remember that post. Good thinking that one thru. Idk who the seller is, just going off of Joe's comment, seemed like a tough road to go though in general. You have a lot things that need to fall into place it seems with your plan.

I wonder if these people are doing that - if you are Hall of Fame you basically get a 4% rebate from Topps. If you respond by using that rebate to say you sometimes get $2 cards that you can sell cheaply, you are just throwing away the rebate.

I mean, it makes sense to me.

Topps has created the Platinum program. Through a number of mechanisms, either by free cards, or opportunities to guarantee cards, this program enables members to get products that can be turned into tens of thousands of dollars when all is said and done.

A guy wants to be Platinum for next year. To do so he buys 20 of each card at the very generous bulk discount that Topps offers him. This costs him $80 per. He isn't trying to make any money, just get Platinum status, so he sells them at cost/small loss. So 50 cents for the stamp, a penny or two for the envelope, and 20% for Ebay/Paypal fees puts him at roughly a 50 cent loss per card selling at $5.

Assuming this year's TN program will print 750 cards, he is basically buying 15000 cards at a cost of $60000, which would almost certainly make him a Platinum member. If he takes a 50 cent loss on each card he is getting back $52500, for a net loss of $7500.

What we haven't accounted for is that if someone purchases 4 cards at a time from him, he gets $20, and minus fees and the stamp he's at roughly $15, so those cards are only a 25 cent each loss for him. So he is probably not losing as much as $7500, probably closer to $5000. We also haven't calculated his discounts that are pretty much bringing his card prices down to $3.80 or so, so we can take 20 cents off of his losses for every card. Hell, he might even be close to breaking even, but let's call his year a $2000 loss.

This also hasn't even considered the fact that he is probably doing more than just buying and flipping 20 cards per day. Maybe there are some cards he sells for $6 and makes a few cents on. Maybe he is buying and flipping autos as well. But even at a basic 20 pack of every card released, he is coming close to breaking even selling at $5.

For that $5000 he pays this year, next year he gets Platinum status. He will get free cards that alone could cover that loss, but on top of that he will now have the opportunity to reserve autograph cards that will allow him to profit substantially on a quick flip. He spends $500 on a /10 auto of a hot rookie, flips it right away for $750. Every time one pops up, he does this. He maybe now selectively buys his cards, only buying the big selling cards but doing it in quantities of 60 or 80 to ensure that he is able to move them.

Between the free cards he gets, the autos that he buys and flips, and the selective purchasing of cards (not to mention COTM freebies), he is easily able to spend his $50-70k to maintain Platinum status, but now he is also making a profit, not losing money. He can do this in perpetuity as long as there is a TN program. And once there isn't, he's fine, as he is not left holding the bag on anything.

As far as I'm concerned, these guys selling this low are just gaming the system to get Platinum status. And many of them will. And we'll really regret the bulk discounting when we're all left holding the bag for cards we paid ~$10 for that are worth a fraction of that, while this guy gets to loss-lead his way into a pretty nice profit from his Platinum stuff.

Ask yourself: would you pay a few thousand dollars for Platinum membership? Not everyone can afford to, but those who could would do it in a heartbeat. Hell, we have people willing to pay tens of thousands for it. This guy just figured out a way to have Topps pay him to become Platinum. If that's his angle, I commend him for it.

^ the only problem with the above strategy is the assumption that Topps is going to give more people platinum status at all, of which there is no guarantee

I'd bet he's pretty close to breaking even though, so it's a good chance to take. Plus, cancelling Platinum might kill the desire of some high roller people to support the program.

If you go with the theory that these sellers are buying in bulk to get a chance at Platinum based on total spending, then they would also have to buy the autos and relics to even have a chance. Flipping the base cards as fast as possible would give them ready cash that they can use to purchase the next round of autos to get them another set of coupons. Are they also flipping autos in addition to the base cards? They would have to sell them cheap or auction them off to get ready cash. Otherwise, they would have to sit on them for quite a while.

I made Platinum pretty much by buying every day about halfway through the set last year and buying most of the autos and relics. I didn't start selling off my cards until this year and that is through COMC. As of the last check in, I am still a Platinum. I am buying just enough for my two base sets plus extras of rookies and call-ups, and taking advantage of the reservation program. I think you do get extra consideration if you are a loyal buyer who buys every day, or at least the majority of the base cards. Remember, it is a Loyalty Program and Platinum membership is by invitation only.

12. WHAT IS PLATINUM LEVEL?

Platinum level is an invitation-only Program status offered to Program Members who have achieved and maintain Points beyond Hall of Fame in a preceding year. Members with Platinum status will receive special perks not available to other Tier levels.

13. HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR PLATINUM LEVEL?

Platinum level status is by invitation only.
