I think so. Based on what I've seen at my retail stores....stuff was getting bought out well before the hobby box price hike.

You didn't answer the question. All you did was justify buying out entire stores because "people are going to buy it anyways"...

How does it make it more accessible?
It doesn't (or it does, but at a markup cost). I'm just pointing out that if it's going to sell out either way, at least it's available in another form.

Either way, the real enemy is the group breakers, whose hobby box price driving is causing these retail runs.

Disagree but we'll never know. I don't see people buying out stores if you couldn't resell. They'd buy a box here or there to try and get a hit. They aren't buying 10 boxes, to try and pull a Judge, if they can't then sell it. Who knows obviously.

It all comes down to 2 things.

Greed and People with Gambling Addictions.

It is. Something about OP's post struck a nerve, and it really brought out the worst this hobby has to offer.

Agree to disagree but I do think there are more people buying a box here and there than I'm guessing you estimate. Especially those who decide not to pay bloated hobby prices.

No. You are wrong. Many people are buying just to resell. That makes stores sell out faster. There is proof of this in threads all over Blowout.

retail buying for me started with the mega boxes from Bowman this year

I got ahold of those, cracked a few and sold a few and posted about it here. Then when I couldn't find the mega boxes I started buying Archives and regular Bowman. It was so odd. I stopped cause I came to my senses considering the Bowman Mega boxes were in such short supply accompanied by rising hobby box prices retail just seemed to make sense.

Soon realized that was nonsense that I knew before I even began looking at retail as an option. I suppose people are thinking or hoping that others are thinking that if you can't find it on the shelves then it must be HOT!! It's like some sort of supply and demand trick... but it's working cause people are getting upset that they can't find it... or so it seems.

Just curious what your business plan is if you get in an accident driving to those targets for your business and get hurt? How do you plan on paying YOUR medical bills with no insurance? I assume those people you could care less about their feelings will be needing to cover those bills for you. Just a thought

I appreciate the turn this thread has taken in the last couple pages. It's nice to be reminded not everybody here is a greedy dolt solely concerned with obtaining as much as possible for themselves.

Just last night I stumbled upon a display of Bowman Platinum after the other two Walmart stores in the area were completely ravaged. I'm guessing that this particular location had held theirs back for some reason, or maybe were just slow to put it out. Despite knowing how sought after it is and what a hard time I personally had finding some, it never even crossed my mind to buy it all up. I felt weird enough carrying a collector box, two blasters and fat pack to the register. Hopefully the next person to stop in doesn't find it necessary to swipe up the other 3 boxes, 8 or so blasters and however many fat packs all to themselves.

A lot of kids care more about the latest game on their phone or IPad. Baseball cards are boring to them. A lot of people in this hobby got involved when we were kids and did not have access to so many different options (think 80s and early 90s). It made sense for us to re enter the hobby down the road after we had more disposable income to do so.

A bigger problem is full shelves of packs and boxes or not a lot of kids do not and will not have any interest in this hobby.

Essentially there is a structural crack in the foundation of the hobby (as far as kids entering and staying in the hobby) that there may not be a solution available to fix this.

Whoa! I certainly did not mean that to sound like I'm just a jerk who doesn't care about people in general, that only applies to something as trivial as purchasing baseball cards. For the record, I'm not shoving aside old ladies and children to get to them. If someone is there, I wait my turn. If little Timmy Two-tooth meanders up and says "Gee mister, all I ever gosh wanted was some Topps Heritage", I'd hand over what he wanted. Outside of that, if in America, I have the opportunity and means to buy something, I don't think I'm a jerk for not asking all the complete strangers around me how they feel about it. I tip well, I hold doors, I look for opportunities to do something nice for others. There are a lot of 1/1 cards I want, but some jerk bought them all up. I somehow still make it through the day.

Definitely not going to debate health care on here, that would derail the thread. If you'd like to have polite discussion on that, pm me.

You make your living off of retail blaster boxes? They don't seem to get restocked more often that every other week if that... and after figuring in gas and food stops it just doesn't add up for me. Are there highly sought after stars year round that provide such sustainability for such a lifestyle?!

I buy hobby/jumbo, too, and any other product outside of cards that I know I can flip. I wouldn't make a living off of just retail cards, no. But, it is possible to make profit on retail in the long run. The profit may not happen for a year or two. Trying to flip everything immediately is where most people lose.

In the past, I was one of those who would drive around for hours trying to find something. I do not do that anymore, because most things can be purchased at retail cost or even below online.

That's what I don't get... The profit is minimal, let's say you even profit a couple thousand dollars. You're waiting a year or two hoping to profit a few thousand dollars?

You can make more money working at McDonalds....

I understand where you are coming from, but there is one sentence in general where your post goes ALL wrong. The one where you say this is a hobby, not a business. For many on here, it is a side business in order for them to feed their habits. Secondly, please take the time to understand capitalism and how it works. Life isn't always fair for everyone. Upon release, you normally buy or even preorder blasters online, so if you want to buy them, do it there and don't worry if your retail outlet is barren. Does it suck, yes. But I went through it too and came out on the other end just fine and now am one of those people that decides where I spend my money. How unAmerican of me, right?

This sums it up nicely. The sooner people realize and understand the bolded statement, the better off they will be as adults. I would say sorry if that comes across as harsh, but it's reality.

"That's capitalism deal with it" is the common thread here with the "OP is a loser" camp. Where would we be as a society if we care nothing about the opinions and concerns of others? Exactly where we are right now and it isn't very good. It isn't illegal to cheat on your spouse but why don't you do it? Because it's morally wrong despite what you may gain from it. Is wiping out 8 targets of cards illegal? No but you are potentially depriving dozens to hundreds of young collectors from enjoyment and fun. We should hold our actions to a higher moral standard than "it's legal and allowed so suck it up." Greed is what sustains this hobby and ultimately it will be what kills it. Pleas continue justifying gross selfishness and gluttony with the "that's capitalism/America" argument. Because sadly you are right, this country was founded on and thrives upon greed and self interest.

This is on point. I'm so sick of hearing "It's capitalism you snowflake, suck it up", it's such a poor excuse for being greedy.

Bingo. Too many people in this world/hobby/forum are looking out for their wallets and theirs alone.

Well thanks to Bowman platinum I finally got revenge on the douche that opens boxes and puts other cards in them and reseals them. I had no proof that the guy was doing it but I just knew by looking at him he was a scumbag. I saw the empty platinum display when I was in my nearest Walmart and who should come in to return some platinum but mister scumbag. I snuck behind him at the return counter and when he returned the box I went to the cashier and told her to open the box, well let's just say 2010 topps attax is not exactly bowman platinum. They would not accept his return and told him not to shop there anymore.

Is it wrong for a COLLECTOR to "buy all 8 blasters" on a stores shelf?
