or a standing(NO RUN) dunk from the free throw line.
I recall reading in a book that he was able to dunk from behind the free throw line without leaving that half circle. Even though Russell was an incredible athlete, I don't think anyone else in NBA history could do such a thing.

There is so much lore and myth surrounding Wilt Chamberlain.
Every year the legend builds.

He was able to dunk from behind the free throw line without leaving the half circle?
Anybody with half a brain can plainly see that is an exaggeration.

Do you know what evidence exists of Wilt's 100 point game? The picture of him holding up that piece of paper with "100" written on it. There is no footage, just a single picture of him holding up a piece of paper. That is a tribute to how little we know about Wilt Chamberlain the basketball player.

I have no doubt he was a great player, but it amazes me that people spout off word of mouth rumors that they read on wikipedia as if they have a first hand account of Wilt's greatness.

There was this thing called 'radio' back in those days...

I mean the radio broadcast exists unless that was just a sham lol. Does it really seem far fetched that someone who took that many shots and shot such a high percentage could score 100 points?

I understand there is a lot of lore surrounding him, but people use myth to discount him too. It's a lot like Lebron to me, he can't possibly be as good as people make him out to be lol. They're both overrated, they're not gods. But seriously the same argument you have against people praising him who didn't see him play directly applies to you diminishing him even tho you never saw him play! It's the same thing.

Talking of which, I don't believe that Kobe scored 81 points against the Raptors. It's so easy these days to create fake videos. I think it was done in Movie Maker.

easy to say especially when he's your guy but those teams were stacked. and there were a lot of other variables involved in the other guys not winning as many rings. i.e. michael jordan. like i said, easy to say, but not fair.

Continue to worship a man you know next to nothing about.
I don't know why I attempt to have reasonable discussions on these forums.

I have seen zero evidence that anybody here knows much about Wilt Chamberlain other than the most common of knowledge.

I just think that everyone here knows very little about Wilt Chamberlain, which is why in my opinion it is stupid to vote for him in this poll.

I gotcha, so you're allowed to discredit wilt based on the same reasons some people aren't allowed to praise him. makes perfect sense. oh, they didn't see him play but they think he's soooo great. you didn't see him play but you think he's overrated, and that's what counts! got it! And for the record i don't worship the man, i'm not sure he was the greatest of all time, but i think it's silly to discredit him for the things he achieved and just completely discount him based on rumor.

For the 5000th time, I'm not discrediting him. I just haven't seen anyone here show much knowledge on the subject.

You claimed that Wilt played during a time when there were plenty of other 7 footers, which I already debunked with actual facts.

His stats were inflated by being in a mostly white NBA comprised of shorter, weaker players (especially during the years he was most dominant). His stiffest competition was Bill Russell, who was 3 inches shorter and 70 Lbs lighter.

LOL. .. . . . . . .. .. . . There is more concrete evidence that wilt scored 100pts in a real NBA game then NASA actually landing men on the moon. LOL.

LOL

I'm not refuting that he scored 100 points. You have the IQ of a rock.

and you claimed that wilt was the only 7 footer in the league. there were, per my list, a lot of tall people in the nba. he didn't dwarf everyone. and what does a lot of people being white have to do with it? you keep saying that lol. being tall isn't the end all of being a great basketball player. willis reed won championships against him and he was 3 inches shorter too. you still have to know how to play ball even if you have 2-3 inches on most people in the league. like i said, ALL of these centers were gifted in that regard, and they didn't go up against each other every day. they had plenty of games ALL OF THEM against smaller weaker opponents.

Hence my point.

Put Dwight Howard up against Gordon Hayward, and lets see how well he does.

all the players on this list were physically dominant is my point, they all had plenty of games against weaker smaller 'white' opponents. not just wilt.

So you don't concede that Shaq & Hakeem played during an era with far more low post competition than Wilt & Russell?

The evidence is right in front of you but you refuse to look at it.

Wilt was regularly matched against white guys in the 6'7-6'9 range, and yes their ethnicity is relevant. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand that caucasians are for the most part less athletic than african americans.

Was Wilt a great player? IMO yes, but his inflated stats at the beginning of his career are a product of the competition (or lack of) as much as his own ability.
