Will Topps replace Gold foil cards with bad chipping straight out the pack, or not worth trying?

For starters, I picked it up at a local card store for $153 (sticker shock!). We are talking about Flagship....right? There will be more cards for this release in circulation than any other release this year. I swear I saw this for $550 a case 2 months ago?!?!? I like to support local businesses, but the distributors are absolutely raping consumers here...

I typically try to build a master set of base plus the base inserts and am usually quite happy with the numbered cards, inserts, colors, variations, etc. that come in a box. Then I buy retail hangers, hobby single packs, and singles to help complete things out. I will typically sleeve duplicate hotter rookie cards and put them in a box. I don't sell and hold onto cards because I simply like to collect and stick to flagship and update.

This time around I was very unhappy with the overall results. Best card I got was a (one) base Jordan Alvarez RC. My autograph card was very weak. I only got three numbered cards in the whole thing. Two where golds that are never going to be worth more than $1. The third was on the manufactured relic (black color variant of ohtani) that had a large ding in the corner (not that it really matters, it is a manufactured patch). The "used" relic was a cool looking 1985 Ozzie Smith bat slice, but that card is poorly centered/cut. Nothing great in the 5 gold foil or 5 rainbow foil cards received. There were no pink, black, blue, red, advanced stats, vintage stock, etc.... no further color variation, outside of the gold, gold foil, and black manufacture relic mentioned, in any of the packs opened, including silver packs. There was only 1 SP photo variation of a retired player (McGwire) that will never be worth more than a few bucks.

While I was able to complete the base set from the box, there were more duplicates when said and done than previous years. I am convinced the overall number of inserts per pack was smaller than last year. I think I have more duplicates with this release than I did from the 2019 update jumbo I opened. There is absolutely no value at all... I would have done better buying $150 in retail hanger packs.

Yes, I am whining. I feel better now! (not really!) Hope everyone else enjoys their cards! Have fun ripping!
That really sucks. To back up your point, I paid $22 for a couple retail hangers and pulled two Yordan RCs, but the hobby pricing right now can be completely absurd. More people have to speak with their wallets and stop buying. I want card shops to stick around and I support them as much as is reasonable, but there is a point where the consumer has to put their foot down.

Been doing pretty well buying the 1985 HOFer autos on EBay so far....especially considering that they are generally fairly scarce compared to active players.

Picked up Ripken & Boggs both for <$100, and Bench for $42.00.

Have also picked up a 1985 Soto & Vlad Jr. Black for less than $100 each, and a Bichette Jr. Black for $130.

Agreed! Hobby pricing is sure out of whack right now... Obviously I regret buying the jumbo I did. However can't bring it back. Lol!

Unfortunately, this likely also changes my collection strategy for now. No more master set as it is just getting too expensive (for me with what I want to spend on cards). Will probably try to get the 1985 35th anniversary 100 cards along with the base set I already have and call it good.

Although, it is fun to see others pull great cards! Keep them coming!

After last years versions, the reverence patch autos are a pretty big letdown to me. Loved the look of last years, like you really found something very special at very long odds.

Walmart.com has non Walmart exclusive hangers in stock for 10 ea. Better than the 11 per on their exclusive ones...which still haven't even shipped yet...

RUN!

Here ya go.

Within the last 6 months, Ive bought almost nothing from the local shops in my area, and have shifted almost all of my purchasing to retail. Why buy a pack of cards for $6 at a LCS when I can get it for $3 at Target?

There are LCSs in my area that are wonderful to visit and I try to frequent them when needing supplies or checking out their dollar boxes. Im just done getting less for my money at LCSs.

Lets also not pretend LCSs are free from the unethical stuff that goes on in the hobby.

Only 1 left and shipping is $6 unless you spend $35. Bummer.

I just walked up to my walmart when he was putting them out. Put out two whole of those box things they have. Almost bought both boxes. Probably should have. Lots of cards for less then a hobby case

Might be an obvious question, but: Any idea what the print run is on the SSPs? Pulled a Griffey photo variation today and trying to determine how to price it.

Very cool! Yeah I mostly cleared out my Target...took all the hangers and fat packs but just took 1 blaster and left the rest. None at my other Target and no sign of these at my Wallys yet.

Hanger pack odds. SP=1:9. SSP=1:267.

I just miss my old card shop and feel the retail sales from past were smaller because there wasn’t that many locations. That’s not the case anymore. Not trying to gatekeep or throttle anyone’s experience just that it pushed out the little dude in the smaller cities.

Try doing differnt amounts/variables. I loaded 12 and it said...."not available". Loaded 1,...added to cart. Tried 8....added to cart. Got 9 total....paid/checked-out/confirmed.

My 1 case of Jumbo had 1 pink, 1 blue, 2 black, 1 vintage, 2 advance stats, 4 SPs. the autos were really not that good. some serial numbered inserts, manu stuff. the golds were of really no great names. the foils were decent and the gold foils were probably the best. all the silver packs only yielded 2 parallels (none auto'd)

some packs had 5 or 6 inserts and others had 3. So with longer odds and higher print runs hitting something specific in a box/case is not all that easy. lots of the exact same run in each pack so pretty much knew what RCs were going to pop up. If I paid over presale price I'd probably be really unhappy too.

That doesn’t even sound fun brother...with the predictable packs knowing you are in a poopy correlation.

Any good RC counts at least ?

about 7-9 of everyone it looked like. Only took out Lux, aquino, gallen, hoerner, bichette, yordan while opening.

If I saw Lux I knew hoerner was later or the other way around. aquino and yordans were alone but usually the order of the other cards would tell me who was in each pack. 2018 update was like that for me with retail and same with 2019 s2 and update. At least all the hits were right in the middle so really didn't have to look for codes on the back.

If you were able to complete the base set, then all other base cards would be duplicates no?

As a case breaking newbie, what's the best route to go with top RC cards like Yordan and Bo: sell after right breaking while the iron is hot or send off to PSA and endure the couple month wait to sell?
