I understand what you are getting at, but there are distinguishing factors between a true "base" card and their parallels. What my point started out as, was there a difference in the "Artist Proof" and the base card.

I would actually be way more interested in the Artist Proofs (or Gold 1/1's to a lesser extent) if it were the original work. Saying it is an "Artist Proof" and just having it as a framed base card with hand numbering just doesn't seem like that much of a difference to me to pay such a huge premium.

I see 4 types of cards:

- Base cards (direct from Topps)
- Silver framed AP parallels (direct from Topps)
- Gold framed AP parallels (direct from Topps)
- Altered cards (artist and player signed cards, etc.)

All are collectible, in my opinion.

The artist proofs are actually constructed differently and have a front and a back that are combined within the frame. They obviously are not the original work as many of the originals are digitally done and others like Blake's work is done to a much bigger scale and then reduced to fit a card. It would have been nice if Topps had the artists sign them similar to how real artist proofs are done.

But you're in a hobby where for years, a tiny silver stamp on a card would increase it's value literally 100x (Stadium Club 1st day editions) or some shiny gold refractive coating does the same.

Or, take the same card and put a 1/1 stamp on it and watch it fly.

Topps' tradition is to make a small change to a base card...number it... and the value escalates.

I agree with what you're saying, though. However, isn't all of this art uploaded digitally? Is there actually an "original" work?

The guy who has the 2019 Topps Alonso Platinum 1/1 posted here that he had it in with the rest of his Alonso RCs for months before he even noticed the stamp on the back. Turned $6 into $1000 real quick.

The concept of the APs is definitely not new, and the fact that it's handwritten doesn't really matter to most buyers either. It's never bothered people buying Ginter parallels.

From watching some of Blake's streams, he usually does multiple large paintings of each card to try out different color schemes or ideas. Then when he is happy with the artwork, he takes a picture of it and then does any post production such as team names, logos, and player signatures. He has stated that he gets to keep his original works but is not allowed to sell them or use them any commercial purpose.

From watching an Efdot stream it seems he does all his work digitally.

So it looks like in some cases there is physical original work but is the artists property.

That Ted Williams looks like something from a horror movie. Looks like he is being eaten or impaled by killer worms. Horrible.

You are right, in your opinion. I think it looks incredible. We are both right. I bought 2 of them.

Passing on today's Williams, not part of my overall plan for this set, it is "interesting" though. Definitely thought it looked like snot too.

I'm waiting for the first Don C card to drop. I haven't seen one from him yet. Curious what his stuff will look like, and if he's an artist I might get the whole run of.

I thought that Rivera might be the low PR for the set.

If Gooden can "beat" out that card, Doc may have a stay at the top/bottom for awhile.

How is everyone collecting this set? I like that there are so many ways. Personally, I'm going to get every Trout. I'm not interested in trying to get the entire set, and by collecting one player, I'll get to have one from each artist. Planning on putting them all in one large frame. I'll admit, I hadn't heard of any of these artists prior to this, but Ermsy's stuff is pretty cool. I'm sure due to licensing, he can't make the kind of stuff he's used to with these cards, but his style is defintely growing on me.

I really disliked that card at first. But its minimalism has grown on me. Rivera would fit right in if he wore that today in Williamsburg.

I'm in the same boat as you. I am collecting the Trout set. I'll pick up a few here n there that I like designs of...but for the most part its gonna be just Trout.

I'm also gonna put them in a large frame that I already have.

Buying every single release, selling most, keeping a select few for PC....holding some for several months, i.e. Ermsy Trout and Saladeen Griffey...

Ermsy sells artist signed edition copies through his website. Trout sold out but he still has Ichiro. They come with a Topps hologram seal so they are an official collectible.

I believe he got Topps permission to use their brand on the autos but this certainly isn't something Topps is producing for him.

I started out by collecting the first 20 (thought Topps would be doing 1 card by each artist every 20) with the idea of deciding on additional purchases after that. After the first 20 I liked the set enough to decide to collect the second 20.

Once the set got to card 40 I decided I had enough "overall" coverage and going forward would try to complete full sets for 5 of the artists whose style I find fun for the cards. Blake for the portrait style, Ermsy for the weirdness, Baller for the bling, Natural cause they are close to the original card but also has his touch with the triangles, and JK5 for the intricacy.

As I only buy 1 of a card for my PC (not buying to flip) I like buy the 2 card daily pack for the small savings and it will give me some additional exposure to artists that I am not completing full sets of.

And I have thought of putting his signed set together as it would look so so cool but I can't throw $1800 at it but I am sure others can (I already have the Trout ordered)
