Yes, this sucks. Such is the risk of doing things never done before. I for one am still excited to see where the Shohei story goes from here. Yes he won't pitch for awhile, but then he will again. And we will see more 2 way genius. He won't let us down because he won't let himself down.

Yeah, I bet he either signs a short term deal, or one with a ton of opt outs. Makes it more likely to stay with the Angels. Assuming he doesnt pitch, does he move to RF? Can he learn 1b?

Arm fatigue + large drop in velo = that's the key sign of a UCL injury.

Just make him the closer when he comes back from TJ in 2025.

Manfred should let him use steroids. Who would be mad at that honestly.

Sure, they're going to drop. Lots of people got in recently as hype peaked, and my guess is lots of those hands are weak. I'm glad I sold out of my base, and am glad I'm still holding my good stuff. If prices get axed enough I'm excited to add some more good stuff. At a 50% hair cut from here I will be adding no doubt.

This is why you consolidate up. Rare stuff is still hard to come by, and last TJS proved that some very strong hands are in possession of many of his best cards. This sucks, but you have to try to find the silver lining. He's still on the right side of 30 and with a MVP caliber bat. Remember that he would win the MVP this season with zero innings pitched.

Absolutely. Even if he never pitches another inning again, he's easily a top 3 athlete to ever play the sport. The others of course being Rickey and Bartolo Colon.

I'm also convinced that he'll break Bonds single season record if he devotes 100% of his time to hitting.

I wonder if he will continue to hit the rest of the year. They knew of the tear after the first game of the DH but let him hit in the second.

Bo Jackson is probably in that top 3, for the limited time he played pre injury

It's going to be alright guys. Put your cards down and go to bed. He will travel to NY and hit a few homers on the roadtrip. He will figure it out, you will all live, and it won't be as bad in hindsight.

I'm not there yet. Still in shock I guess, but yeah it's coming. As you said, this is a major blow to the sport of baseball. It's like Jordan retiring the first time after 3 championships. The league was a shadow of itself until he came back. When Shohei hits the mound again, my guess is it'll come with similar fanfare and all will be right with baseball again. It's the waiting that will be hard - I think I'm going to begin jotting down a new Shohei want list and keep an eye out for pricing that appeals to me. That'll help me cope.

2 cards I sold awhile ago because I needed to pay some bills and have been upset since:

2017 Mega Box
2018 Heritage Action

I'll be adding others as well.

Right now, leading the American League in HR, 2B, BB, OB, OPS, TB with the bat, and what he has done as a pitcher in 22 starts 10 wins, 15 K's in 130 IP, ERA 3.17, EAR+ 142 leads the league. He has combined WAR of 9.5.

Angels are out of it, does he keep playing to try for the AL MVP? Doesn't seem like an Ohtani thing. Not really a personal glory kind of guy. IMO. On the other hand, he seems to love to play, and loves to earn his paycheck.

If he can hit with a UCL issue, which apparently he can, does he keep hitting? Does hitting have the potential to make his UCL worse?

Surely his advisors must be telling him to hang it up and get immediate TJ surgery. The sooner he gets the surgery, the sooner he can start rehab, and the sooner he is back to helping a team win a world series.

I'm guessing that the Angels are backing away from teh decision and saying, Shohei, you've got to do whatever you want, whatever is best for you. Listen to your personal doctors, and make a decision. The Angels don't want any part of pressuring him to play, and ending up making it worse. With the Angels out of it, there is no reason to pressure him to play. There is every reason to let him do whatever he wants, as that increases the potential that he stays an Angel on a short term deal.

On the other hand, a short term deal with the Angels or any other team, depends on his ability to DH next year.

A lot to think about.

That's rough timing for sure man, ugh. Take solace that they were likely rarer fine 9s and my guess is those will hold up fairly well as lots of holders of such cards are collectors and not investor/flipper types.

PSA 10 Base Bowman Chromes, watch out below!!!!

All your questions can be answered from his first TJS with very high probability.

So if the UCL is a partial tear, does that still mean likely TJ? I know sometimes pitchers will just go ahead and have it done without a complete tear but will it heal on its own without the TJ with an off-season of rest? If he does get TJ might as well get it done right now and I agree, become the best closer in MLB in 2025 and on...Stay hard Shohei you are the greatest.
