I think you guys need to listen to the people here that were around from the first go around of TJS (besides me).

And unsolicited, but I'll say it. This is NOTHING compared to the first time. First time he went under the knife, he had a highly contested ROY award to Miguel frickin Andujar on his resume and that was it. This time is another animal where his second MVP/POY is in the bag, a WBC champ, and a global icon at a fresh 29 years old. I'll be adding.

Yeah, those are some awesome cards. You certainly went hard at the good stuff, and yes it hurts I'm sure. Still quality choices long term though as you know as well as I.

I think he tried that before and it ended up needing surgery. Not sure if its different with a second tear.

Ligaments don't heal well unfortunately. If it is a small tear, they will work on building the muscles around the area to stabilize it. I'm guessing we will hear in the next few days what he will do.

I am no doubt going to add a couple in the upcoming dip to my collection starting with that 2017 Bowman Mega and the Chrome Complete Set card. I have most of the other main RCs but those 2 evade me.

Great perspective, as always. Yes, after the 2st TJ Shohei had that awful year hitting as well and he became an afterthought to most. To those that stayed true, ample rewards were given. Ohtani's resume is like night (2020) and day (2023) at this point. A little darkness will allow some prey to scamper out into our price range. Some big game animals will think it's safe to trot out into the dusk and I'll have my weapon ready. Meaning my Ebay sniping hands.

Oof, yeah the Wander thing is on a whole other level. Shaping up to be a tragedy on a lot of levels. You're right, what a tough month to collect baseball cards it has been. I think I'll go bust some cheap Pro Debut when it comes out in about a week to feel better. The Jacksons are in it, should be fun.

100%.
Also, please watch the Nov 2018 NHK documentary below,
to hear directly from Shohei his mindset when he decided to get TJ surgery.

He basically said that he thought he can still pitch fairly effectively even without TJ surgery, but he would not be happy not being able to compete at the ultimate level, so he decided to get TJ.

In my opinion, his 1st TJ experience will inform him how to better attack his rehab.

I think '85 Topps is cheap enough to go Gooden hunting... My favorite player growing up was Eric Davis and his Rookie is in that set too. Split a box? Lol!

Well I said a couple weeks back I planned on trying to finish my Ohtani collection before the offseason. After hearing this news... I don't think that'll be happening.

A few cards I didn't think I'd get for a price I like now seems extremely realistic. I have a huge card that Goldin receives tomorrow (bad timing) and a few other cards I'll be selling regardless of what happens with prices. Then I'll be taking that money and putting it towards those final 7-10 Ohtani cards I've wanted the past few years. I'm so bummed about this but I think in 20 years it'll just make the Ohtani story that much more incredible.

One thing i'll add.. One was when he was much younger, but that guy named Nathan Eovaldi has had multiple Tommy John surgeries and a couple of other procedures. This year he is 11-3 with a 2.69 ERA.

There's way too many doomers about Ohtani. His prices aren't going to nosedive, talking about dropping 50%

Speaking of MVP.

If he doesn't play the rest of the season...depending on severity of tear and likelihood of further damage during swings.... is he still the clear cut MVP?

If he still bats... it's his for sure.

9.6 bWAR. That's higher than his unanimous MVP season in 2021. Your answer is, it's already engraved.

But it's Shohei. He's probably going to try to win the home run crown

Just awful news and terrible for the sport. With both ny teams sucking, he was the only player I made a point to watch. He will have to see how bad the tear is and decide on what he wants to do. Tanaka never got the surgery the first time, but kept pitching.

He's done the MLB thing for 6 years... likely to win his 2nd MVP.

After this news... any chance he goes back to Japan to play?

I would be surprised if he gave up on mlb. I can't think of a more consequential injury in terms of free agency. Whether they had a chance or not, so many teams were looking at him being their crowning piece.

Man this sucks. On a positive note my strategy of not buying until the off-season looks even better than it already was.. Congrats to all that sold during the past few months

So you think he'd even consider passing up a contract worth well into nine figures to go back to Japan and not make anywhere close to that?
