my understanding is that quality control over at Playoff at the time wasn't great, so a lot of the Contenders autographed rookie cards came out miscut straight from the company, hence the "authentic" grade.

i didn't know about this, but i was pretty well educated from the fellas here at BO about it.

i have the entire rookie autographed set from 2000 Contenders and yep, it's true.

i think just in general, the COVID bubble is pretty much over now, Brady isn't playing anymore, people have moved their money over to the current players, and prices are just evening out now.

same happened with my boy Montana when his rookie went from $175 all the way down to $100.

Brady's Contenders was always listed in the Beckett guide at $50K-80K. i think you can expect it to be more around the $25K range now, but if they are selling for under that, well then maybe $15K as the low.

i never thought it would drop that low, being that it's one of the most iconic cards of all-time. i don't think even Mantle's 1952 card ever really fell that low did it?

good thing is, i don't think the card will drop much more, and will see several bumps in the years ahead.

HBO is making a show on the Patriots (kinda like the Lakers one), Brady is back on tv next season, and then there's the HOF bump in 5-years.

Mantle 52 Topps PSA 8 sold for $2.1M in July 2021. It sold in September 2023 for $972K.

i meant a regular version, raw or whatever. don't they sell for a minimum of $25K?

i don't think even one of the lower grades has ever gone for lower than that has it?

The only PSA 1 Mantle to do under $20k since December 2020 was a copy this spring with heavy tape residue on the front. I’d say the low grades have been flat the last two years. Hard to say for sure given how much the eye appeal varies on them.

Hard to find a numerical PSA Contenders. I see only seven public sales this year for a PSA 6 or higher.

I think that is a good critique of the current market. Bubble is over and now to see where the bottom lies.

Hello everyone-just wanted to introduce myself. I’ve recently begun selling off my vintage baseball and am putting that $ into Brady - mainly rookies. I’d eventually like to get all 44 of his rookies. Recent pickups are: E-X, Gold Reserve, Black Diamond, Playoff Prestige, Omega and Bowman Chrome. I really like the Ionix, Prism and Mystique.
I’m somewhat indifferent to grading company - actually like BGS the most - think because many videos I’ve seen of these cards are in BGS slabs. Recognize PSA is most valuable…now.

Curious to know more what more experienced Brady collectors think of his market. Obviously down a lot since the covid peak-though most cards are. Thoughts on specific cards which are under/over valued?

Besides Jordan I see Brady as the ultimate GOAT. And think many of his cards are great looking.

I think the market has leveled out. Maybe not for the Champ tickets, but most everything else seems to be hanging pretty steady. I have been picking up some rookies since summer as prices have been way down from peak covid.
Personally, I think it is a very good market to acquire.

I think that some of the best to pick up are the same as always, you will just get them much cheaper than 18-24 months ago. look for rookies in his full patriots uniform. low numbered rookies. If you need a rookie ticket, prices are very good right now. a PSA 7.5/9 just sold for 15K and a straight psa 7 with no auto grade just went for 17K.

his Autographics has always seemed a bargain to me.

Mahomes has nothing to do with Bradys market. Brady owned Mahomes as an old man at the end of his career. Just hope Kermit can make it on Mount Rushmore.

Prizm Golds outside of 2012 are not that sought after for Lebron. There are plenty of desirable Lebron TC and BC Gold Refractors from the years 2003 to 2009 to choose from. A better comparison would be Lebron vs Brady 2012 Prizm Golds. Two Brady 2012 Prizm Golds have sold this year whereas a Lebron 2012 Prizm Gold hasn't exchanged hands since 2021.

agreed! Brady never lost to Mahomes in the playoffs and in their one Super Bowl matchup, he did to Mahomes what Montana did to Marino in SB 19...outshone him.

so the idea that if Mahomes wins #3 it's going to drop the Brady market even more, i doubt that happens.

I would agree here. Mahomes does not influence Bradys market. I think the inverse could be true though. the better mahomes does and compares more favorably with Tom, his market will increase.

If he doesn’t win the SB this year, it will be real hard to hit 7. Yesterday was extremely odd play for him. I feel like the media wants him to pass Brady sometimes.

It’s next to impossible to hit 7 regardless. Brady had three by age 28, but didn’t win four until age 34. Mahomes has plenty of time if he can play to 40.

Bottom line is this:

In order to just tie Brady, Patrick Mahomes, who already has a more successful career than most other QBs in history, from this point forward still has to additionally do something no other QB (besides Brady) has ever done, and that is win 5 Super Bowls.

He's a great QB, but I just wouldn't bet on it.

Also, unlike Jordan vs Lebron, Brady was able to go head-to-head against Mahomes. Brady won that too. It will be really hard for Mahomes to surpass Brady in my eyes.
