I have an odd prediction this off season. I think some of his high end HTF cards are going to hit all time highs. This is irrelevant of what team he signs. Some crazy action on his low pop RC Autos. I don't think it's going to slow down. People are buying Shohei the person, not the ballplayer at this point.

See the sapphire base auto going for $20K just now with 5 different bidders above 13k.

And to clarify, besides being a great role model for kids, Shohei isn't going to Wander Franco (allegedly) or Tatis you with a dirty surprise.

Thank you! I was so disappointed when I missed this one in May, can't believe the exact same one popped up again.

This is a /4 RC, but it is a buyback. How do you think it compares to the other Chrome Autos?

It isn't the best picture, but it is from the Silver packs at the Ohtani VIP party. Rather than Transcendent on the shield it says Ohtani.

I think Angels know Shohei is leaving. Reading the article on ESPN about this, it says if all 6 are claimed they dip below the $233m competitive balance-tax threshold. Which would mean that they get a 2nd rounder as compensation if Ohtani leaves.

I'm really hoping he leaves and goes to the Dodgers.

I could be wrong, but I imagine it's the highest grade low number auto of his. It's #'d 2/5. That said, has anyone used Goldin before? Any thoughts on your experience? Also, I legit have no idea on value but I imagine the floor right now is 50k.
As a side note, I have a Topps Chrome rookie auto BGS 9.5 of his that I intend to PC for life. This one is just becoming too big for me to justify holding. I may create a separate post for this, but I figured I would start in my favorite thread.
Open to any and all thoughts. Thanks all!
Timing is everything with high end cards and Goldin. They just closed the door on submissions for their September Elite auction and the next one would be during the off-season. I would sell privately like previously suggested or just wait til a March or April auction when hype is high. Unless he's out for the year rehabbing...

Agreed, that said they said they would get it in the September elite if I agree to sell this week.

I would go to the Burbank show this weekend. IF you dont get what you want in a private cash deal, I would wait until Jan-March to auction it.

It's kind of a silly article, that guy is arguing against a strawman. No one thinks Ohtani will lose popularity or even come close to losing the #1 spot in the hobby. The question is if that 10k BC Auto, is going to average 8k over the next year, or 10k or 12k. I still think the injury hasn't seemed to register yet as he's still in the midst of a historic year, unanimous MVP, and he'll be moving to a better team.

The mystique is going to wash off a bit when he's "just" hitting for a year. Nothing changes that he's the greatest player of our generation and possibly the best since Ruth, but he can still be all those things with an 8K BC Auto or a 20k BC Auto. And when he's "just" hitting he really has to be at the top of the league since expectations are so sky high

Love me some Ohtani, but you might be living in a fantasy world if you think his prices wont dip a little with him "only" hitting next year. While great stats, if he hits 40 homers and steals 20 bags, while hitting .275...prices aren't shooting up with that stat line.

imagine what he could do if he concentrated 150% on hitting.

At peak market euphoria, most cannot see anything but up. He was also not very good the two seasons he was "just" hitting, despite him being really damn good at the plate his first season in the league. 149 wRC+ to 120 to 80

Does he get a bump when he signs his massive contract? Potential new fanbase, name all over the news during relatively boring offseason.

Are we really using 2020 stats as part of a predictive model lol

If it's the most likely destination, the Mariners, I don't think so

No, that season didn't exist, it's useless! Throw it out if you want, the season before where he wasn't pitching he had by far his worst offensive year

2020 is a complete joke. The entire "season" start to finish.

He's entering his physical peak and his underlying batted ball measurements (EV, barrels, launch angle etc) and plate discipline have improved dramatically since 2019. I wouldn't bet against Ohtani in 2024 just because he won't be on the mound.

I joke with my wife that if Sho signs with the Mariners due to proximity to excellent rehab access and driveline, we're moving back. She gives me the side eye cause she knows it's not a complete joke.

Do it! My personal plans right now are to spend June 2024 out on the peninsula...certainly would be willing to amend that Bainbridge or something closer to Safeco if the Sho moves to the PNW!
