Playing in Canada where baseball is a niche sport isn't going to help his market. If he goes there they will probably be trying to trade him in two years.
Your lack of knowledge about baseball in Canada is hysterical....Ask anyone in Seattle if the Blue Jays are a nice Niche fanbase....Play with the Dodgers and the dodgers fans love you....play with the Jays and an entire country loves you.

As a dodger fan I have accepted that he will not be a dodger.

Unfortunately has never translated to hobby success though.

No one said they are comparable in the hobby. But if performance is a significant factor in the card values and popularity of players, than their relative performances are relevant.

Stop trying to derail this thread with misinformation.

Canada is an entire country... same population as California. Dodgers have more than 2x the fans of Toronto. This probably closes that gap significantly though! Just didn't see this one coming and doesn't make much sense TO ME.
Hopefully good for baseball!

He has good speed, but he also had fewer stolen bases than Freddie Freeman last season -- 23 vs 20. Fangraphs says Freeman had more baserunning runs than Ohtani last season -- 5.1 vs 3.4.

I follow Ohtani. The team he comes with is something I just deal with.

Well once Yordan plays a full year and hits 50+ hr, more people will care. Until then he's a top hitter who doesn't play enough, can't run, and can't field.

The hobby is fickle and fluid, my friend. A hot player one year is a nobody the next.

I have a nice Ohtani auto rookie in my collection, btw.

for sure, but you are coming after Ohtani here, bring Yordan to the fight is not the flex you think it is.

LA population is about 12% Asian. Toronto population is about 30% Asian, with about 13% Japanese/Korean. The Asian community here in Toronto is massive.

He would make massive money on endorsements up here, and baseball is in no way a niche sport in this country. He will be the face of baseball in the entire nation for his entire contract. The Jays are a massive team across this country

That's nice, but your comparison is to Yordan. Last 3 years Yordan has 4 triples and 2 stolen bases. Ohtani has 22 triples and 57sb. Yordan DHs because he's a one dimensional player who can't do anything else well. Ohtani DHs because he pitches. There's zero comparison.

If you can’t see the issues the hobby has with Yordan, there’s no hope for you.

Yordan has showed up when it's mattered most -- in the postseason, baby:

Career in the postseason: .295/.393/.556, 244 PA, 12 HR, 41 RB, 2.25 WPA

Ohtani in the postseason: zilch

And Canadians in general are just super nice. I can see why culturally he would want to be around that.

Again, has not translated to hobby success for Blue Jays players. So I’m not sure how Ohtani would get anything close to the bump in Toronto that he would in LA or New York.

I see an all-time great postseason performer. I see a World Series champ. I see a franchise cornerstone, along with another epic postseason performer in Jose Altuve.
