I believe that “Flagship” is a moniker reserved for the paper base set rookie card. In that case, it would be 2018 Series 2 #700. You might find an argument for people claiming Update US1 as well.

S2 700 is his true flagship RC. Part of the reason why the US1 is selling for more is cause Topps update is like $4k for a case and novice collectors think "update" is preferred due to the us175. I think you should collect both but 700 is the purer of the two on my eyes

Yup. Not only that, but Ohtani's Series 2 is just a better looking card to boot.

I think Update hype will fall off a bit going forward. 2019 Series 2 was firmly better than 2019 Update, and 2018 Series 2 is arguably better from a rookie perspective with Bat Down, Gleyber and Ohtani 700, the only 'true' big time rookie in 2018 Update is Soto (granted that's a good one). Don't get me wrong its not that people will lose interest in mainline rookies, it's just that Update in particular has some undeserved mystique merely because of US175 and it's really just that mainline is mainline and sometimes among the three Series the release one is better than others. Sometimes Update is the best, sometimes not.

Sure, Topps generally does produce less Update, but not by massive margins.

Hell, 2018 Series 1 was lowkey fully loaded with Devers, Albies, Buehler and Flaherty rookies.

I like the update/update chrome picture. It's one of his best rookie photos. It looks like he's pitching right at you. The series 2 is ok but it's airbrushed and seems like they touched up his face.

Like you said Update/update chrome is short printed compared to series 2/topps chrome. Seems people are treating the update series as something on it's own and not a continuation of series 1/2.

Either way, I think people should be picking up both. He's going to be pitching and hitting from the start of the season. He's definitely way undervalued compared to his counterparts.

Nice! Picked up a card recently to go along with this one. Will post the picture once I receive it. I have not sold a single Ohtani yet despite the prices being up since I purchased them.

I think its subjective. I own both and I like the TU US1 image. The S2 image looks weird (photo-shopped) to me especially his eyes and hat. Both US1 and #700 will do well in the long run. I went heavy on US1 because I liked the image better. It is better to embrace both imo instead of picking one over the other.
