At 71 years of age shouldn't he be playing with his grandkids and not doing advanced alterations to baseball cards?

....especially if it was a card coming from Dennis Pevarnick. At a minimum, all cards submitted by known card molesters should receive a 2 to 3 second blacklight pass/scan

Indeed, when their business purpose was to catch altered cards, that might have made sense.

A guy like Dennis would never have his submissions actually scrutinized. If PSA assessed the friends and family members submissions as thoroughly as they assess the general public's stuff, most of this type of material would not get through.

Count me as someone who strongly feels the grading team in 2019 was more than qualified to catch this stuff. This is simply the type of BS that has gone on since day 1 at PSA that makes it seem as if they have no idea what they are doing.

And nobody needs a blacklight to catch recoloration if they are actually looking at the card. Blacklights, like rulers, are for guys who do not know what to look for.

If the shoe fits....

Besides, blacklights will also catch repapering, various oil- and paste-based fills, and bleaching/artificial lightening.

Yes, but if you caught those, you would have to reject the cards and upset your friends.

Ah but most cards do not need to be looked at for those things. Most of the people who submit to PSA and SGC are not submitting art projects. The guys who do advanced doctoring never have their cards looked at that closely therefore blacklights are a waste of time and space.

BODA is finding an endless run of doctored cards from the guys who have threads dedicated to them not because they submit so much but because very little of what they submit gets rejected.

This card was purchased by Ebay buyer ID bbcinv (Dennis Pevarnick) from Ebay seller probstein123 as a PSA 5 for $202.50 on July 23, 2019.

Same card was consigned to and sold by Heritage Auctions as a PSA 8 for $5,280.00 on February 23, 2020.

Yellow circles are print, fiber, or chipping identifiers.
Red boxes identify:
1) ink or spot removal on front resulting in removal of yellow ink
2) green ink added to type in several letters
3) Many spots removed or minimized from entire back of card

Not disputing that these Hogan cards shown are the same, but isn't there what appears to be a "cloud" on the top back atop of "No." on the PSA 5? I see no evidence of it on the PSA 8. Was that removed too and not noticed by the fellow comparing the cards? Or are my eyes deceiving me?

Yes it was removed. It is ink from a wet sheet transfer. I doubt that corndog missed it as much as he was focusing on 3 other alterations done to the card.

There are also 1933 Goudeys and a 1952 Berk Ross.
Too time consuming to go thru everything.

Heritage will know exactly what he submitted.

You're not really wondering, are you? If you run an auction house like Heritage you are taking lots of consignments from lots of guys like Dennis.

I think the progression goes something like this: TPG grader to card molesting dealer to AH employee.

As i've said many times over the years, the unholy alliance among card doctor, TPG, and AH. What a world. The flip sanitizes alterations and gives everyone cover.

Do you think the number of altered cards in the hobby in 2022 would be less if grading had never gained wide acceptance? I'm inclined to think yes, certainly among non-star vintage anyway. I can't imagine card doctors hacking up modern serial numbered cards en masse either.

Yeah and it is prolific in the hobby. Without them supplying the cards the auction houses would be filled with virtually nothing higher than NM and have endless quantities of high grade appearing cards in VG holders due to minor wrinkles or hints of corner wear.

No question. There's no way someone would be chemically treating, flattening, and hacking up 1933 and 1934 Goudey commons without TPGs dishing out 8s and 9s.

Added all of the outed cards to the Altered Card Database. https://www.tiffanycards.com/altered-card-database

Working on adding the cards submitted by known card doc. Although there is no evidence to prove that these cards were altered, but there is a high probability that they were. Therefore, I am going to be adding them to the list, to allow people to have the info to decide for themselves if its worth their money.

This trimmed card has not been offered for sale that I am aware.
The card and accompanying photos are straight from the PSA certification database.
PSA values the card at $2,200.00.

This one received a 2 grade bump.
The bottom edge has been trimmed and excess ink transfer has been removed/minimized on the back.

PSA Cert # 45019536

1933 Goudey Eppa Rixey #74

Was a PSA 6, it's now a PSA 8.

PSA Database link: https://www.psacard.com/cert/45019536

Pevarnick purchased the card from Ebay seller probstein123 on June 10, 2019 for $305.00.

Purchase:

Trimmed at bottom:

Same card front as a PSA 6 and PSA 8:

Same card back as a PSA 6 and PSA 8:
