And there’s always the possibility of a strike next year as well.

And yet he's still going in the hof. A strike hurts the Tatis/Acuna/Soto/Vladdy group way more.

Baseball striking out would be the most MLB thing ever. Imagine these clowns thinking not playing baseball the season after a pandemic is winding down and people are dying to get outside. The game dies a little bit each time but the next one haha.

He needs to have a lot more great years to hit the type of numbers that put him in that category. If he can't play full seasons he's not going to hit those numbers. I'm just saying that it's possible that he doesn't finish his career at the level of current expectations and there is trending evidence of that.
Even before Trout's latest injury, this was my feeling as well. It has nothing to do with being a Trout "hater" or anything like that, but his prices assume a projection of Top 5 All-Time player (Mt. Rushmore if you add one more face) and with his recent injury history, it's becoming clearer that may not happen.

If we were to be honest, as GREAT as he has been, perhaps a lot of his value is wrapped up in the fact that during his run, every elite player has fallen off a cliff while he has not.

Examples, in no particular order:

Joe Mauer
Ryan Braun
Troy Tulo
Bryce Harper
Evan Longoria
Kris Bryant
Andrew McCutchen
David Wright
Prince Fielder
and the list literally goes on.

"what if we double down on our current strategy of making the game less accessible?"

Guys, its a calf injury, its not a back, wrist, shoulder, achillies. It sucks that he's missing 6-8 weeks, but its not 6-8 months.

Unfortunately, this is a trend now with Trout. It has been 5 years since his last full season. It can be spun any way, but even in 2018 season, he basically missed a month.

by the time he returns, his 30th Bday will be right around the corner. he has been injury prone for 5 years and history shows that most players do not become more durable in their 30's. It is sad that he will most likely not be ranking higher on all time lists if this continues.

The Angels need to get him out of center first. He has been carrying too much weight for that position. there is not a good track record for 240 pound CFers. too much pressure on joints and legs. pop him in left for a couple years, then first, then DH.

Trouts situation is almost reminding me of George Brett. Injuries every year derailing a great player. As Great as Brett was, without all the nagging injuries he could have been better.

But is that from the injury or is that just another example of a card with a sky high market cap and too many copies floating around to sustain that current price? I'm not dogging trout, I think he's the best player in baseball, but I think we're going to see similar dips from every high pop high market cap card.

US175 Pop report

PSA (9,597 total, 5,318 10's)
BGS (6,319 total, 4,110 9.5's + 228 10's)

That's 9,656 copies of the 2011 Trout Update RC slabbed gem mint or better and each one is worth +$3K-$4k? If there is a panic sell because of injury, the Trout RC will fall even further.

The same thing is happening with Luka and Mahomes on the basketball/football side.

It will be interesting if this is a long term trend in high dollar base RC's or a result in panic selling from injuries

He's missed time in part because the Angels were out of it so they didn't bring him back / shut him down.

If crypto keeps crashing you'll see more panic sells.

Two months ago PSA pop reports for US175.

Total - 9,288
10 - 5,253

The population in the wild is still very large and untapped.

And will likely continue to grow. At some point, raw card supply will run out, pop reports will be much larger, supply will catch up to demand and a longer term equilibrium price will be developed. Assuming Trout continues to be the player he is, and understanding US175 is the modern day 89 UD Griffey, I still have trouble understanding how this card will hold it's current value in the end.

Low pop cards are down more than Trout.
Lebron chrome refractors have a pop of 130.
Luka silvers are only pop 2000.
Tatum silvers pop 700
Simmons silvers pop 150

Keep thinking it is just high pop causing this.

Market can't even handle to keep a steady price for one year on super low pop lebrons.

The way he was bashing his helmet into the ground was alarming. Looked like he was having a roid rage outburst.

It was a grade 2 calf strain after jogging on the base path. Highly concerning

That has been mentioned. Obviously the Angels are going to take an overly cautious approach mid season with their franchise star to prevent loss of any additional time.

Lots of years still on his contract. No reason to rush.
