Yeah, I saw stuff like that but nothing, in the limited search, that stopped halfway.

Ran into this ridiculous Griffey collection at a show a few weeks back. Forgot to post till this thread got bumped. There’s some monsters lurking in there.

Another view that cut off some of the other gems in the case.

Great pickups!

I wonder how many super scripts are just sitting in commons boxes? Whenever I see a random box of commons at a show with Upper Deck MVP in it, I inevitably find a super script. Usually a common player, but you never know.

I was happy to find one without the smeared serial number. The dot-matrix style UD used for a couple years was not good. I was eyeing a Bonds Radiance but the serial was smeared and I just couldn't get past it.

96 and 97 Finest are among the best. Awesome gold ref, top card of the product imo.

Especially nice having the coating. I do think the print run of these gold refs (whatever it is) should be differentiated between peeled and unpeeled, as they are distinct collectibles. There are only so many out there with coatings intact, and for me it’s with-coating or bust on these.

Yeah i had to show some restraint because I really wanted one with the coating but have close to buying without just to have one. Glad i waited though!

I'm in the rare group that prefers peeled. The peel was designed to protect the card until it got to the collector, who then was supposed to peel it and enjoy the true beauty of the card.

I can see that since they do pop better sans-peel. I’m the type that wants it how originally issued (I look at this almost like a vintage Star Wars figure in the package…it is “unopened” as issued in a sense…even though those were meant to be opened and enjoyed too!). But beyond that having the peel is just part of the aesthetic of these finest cards for me at this point- it gives the cards part of their charm, which tbh I thought was missing in some of the recent Finest Flashback sets like the 1996 one that just came out, the cards do seem a bit…naked without the peel (outside the w/peel inserts they made rare). Because im so used to the peel on them.

When we say things like “prefer with peel”, that needs a little context. If someone held out two cards- same card one peeled and one not- for me to pick which one I prefer more…it’s essentially nonsensical to prefer the peeled one…I can always take the w/peel and just peel it! But not the other way around. So it makes logical sense to prefer an unpeeled version but not a peeled version. It need not have been like this though: if, say, peeling a coating after decades being on the card would result in damage to the card somehow (splotches or something), then it would make sense to prefer the peeled in the above scenario. But I’m not aware of that and don’t think doing so damages the card.

So in an absolute sense it doesn’t make sense to me to preferred peeled over unpeeled, but it does make sense from the perspective of pricing, to prefer the price a peeled one over an unpeeled (former generally lower), as well as availability. It does make sense to chase peeled ones for those reasons alone.

In terms of the market, I think we do see unpeeled going for higher amounts, as they should for scarcity reasons (and can always just make it peeled), but I’m surprised that differential isn’t more than it is. Personally I would value say an unpeeled PSA 7 or 8 even higher than PSA 10 peeled. I also think all the pop reports from grading companies should distinguish between the two (not a big grader and not sure if they do or not), as they are distinct collectibles.

(sorry to distract from the Griffey thread, this could be its own topic)

Yep, it's personal preference. I understand those who prefer peeled. I'm just one of those whose Star Wars figures are all out of the packaging.

But hey, every card I peel makes your un-peeled more rare. You're welcome.

But remember, it may have left the factory with the peel on, but it also left in a pack wrapper. Both were specifically instructed to be removed by the manufacturer. Heck, thebpeel tells you to peel it...on the peel.

REALLY wish I still had these.

They were consecutive numbered - but can't remember if it was 27 and 28 or 26 and 27.

Picked up a mislabeled 1998 Donruss Collections card. It is actually a Prized Collections with a print run of 560, but was labeled as a Leaf.

Found an odd one I forgot I had that I pulled back on 1999 and am hoping someone remembers more about it. It’s a 1999 Topps Chrome Early Road to the Hall Griffey that is labeled as a refractor but is not a refractor and not numbered. It’s a known error, but I don’t recall how rare it was. It’s a pop 1 at PSA but that could just be from folks not knowing they have them. Is this actually rare?

This set is exclusive to Series One packs with Refractors serial-numbered to 100 copies.

NOTE: Some non-refractors mistakenly contain the "Refractor" notation below the card number.

Thanks. I remembered most of those details and found that as well, but what I don’t recall is if the error was rare or fairly common. The PSA pop report suggests rare, but it could just be because it is a common enough card that isn’t graded often.
