Their desire to not trade players and not trade a 1st round pick indicates they aren’t going all in for this year.

As far as the “rolling with a rookie QB” and “not working out since Big Ben” the reality is they tried that once, with a horrible coordinator and way too many moving parts offensively. So I don’t think it would be wise to second guess going with a rookie QB or that they are thinking that either.

Personally I don’t want Aiyuk, thought I understand their desire to get him. They have George Pickens and a bunch of unproven doods or just doods behind him - and even he is relatively unproven as a consistent performer. But like you laid out, it’s a long term commitment at a secondary position when your primary position is up in the air/potentially costly starting next season.

They still have enough offensive talent to evaluate the long term viability of Wilson/Fields without committing long term to either Aiyuk or Pickens. Najee, Warren, Freiermuth are more tha e enough taken to surround the QB plus Pickens. They are just very thin at WR behind Pickens and seemingly want to address that now.
Good post, appreciate the reply. But on the Rookie QB thing, they have been looking for a quality backup, and later on a replacement for Ben for 15+ years through the draft.

Not just speaking of Kenny Pickett. You had Dennis Dixon in the 5th in 2008. Landry Jones in the 4th in 2013. Josh Dobbs in the 4th in 2017 and then immediately to Mason Rudolph in the 3rd the next season.

Pickett was a 1st round investment and that didn't work out. But they have also failed to find and develop a QB since Ben in 2005.

Solid...

I don't know how Berry is going to pull it all off considering the Browns are somewhere between $60-80MM over the cap in 2025 and $17MM over in 2026, but he seems to have a plan in place to hold the talent all together until it blow up all at once.

Browns now have 13 players that make over 10M a year after signing JOK (they were just talking about it on the radio locally)… tied with Philly I believe

Teams can figure it out

Talking Steelers here. As much as I hope they overpay for Aiyuk it won’t stop them from getting creative with other guys

Browns also have almost no draft talent from the last 3 years (so long Michael Hall). It's Dawand Jones and that's about it. Eventually this strategy catches up with you, but until then it's about riding the primes of Garrett, Ward, Njoku, Cooper, etc as long as you can and hope Watson can put it together enough to give you a chance.

Not really the point but OK… and you’re even picking some older guys… it’s also riding JOK, Delpit, and eventually Jones, Emerson, etc…

You can always get around the cap if you have ownership willing to stroke a check

JOK got one today for 25M just handed to him. That’s how you get a below market overall cap hit

Catching up to you is relative to how deep the owners pockets are. That’s all I’m saying. If you have liquid cash? You can buy whatever you want and still be under the cap

He’s not coming here.

It’s becoming more and more apparent he’s been masterfully playing the Steelers and 49ers to bleed every cent he can from the 49ers.

I'm not saying it's a bad strategy, it beats the hell out of finishing last every year with no talent, it's just one that catches up with you once the guys that we drafted from 2017-2021 age and you have nobody to replace them. Not gonna stroke a check and find another Myles Garrett out there.

I'm good with it. Beats the hell out of the 'Dians being a first place team but refusing to go all in every time they are there.

All I know is I remember Mitchell Schwartz

He was going to the first draft pick to get a second contract since Joe Thomas…

And we messed it up

Now they all get one. I’m here for it

I’m OK with this as well as Niners fans have become arrogant as hell since Purdy

Browns fans have been the same and they don’t even have an adequate starting QB.

Unless you count the Browns fans that jumped ship to the Chiefs.

It’s true.

We can commiserate. 2023 Joe Flacco is better than any QB the Browns or Steelers have this year.

Falcons should trade Kirk to the Vikings.

I resent this. We've always been arrogant. Being a top NFL franchise does that to a fan.

I doubt the Niners are paying one cent more than they ever wanted to if he stays.

They traded DeForest Buckner for the same reason. Their contracts are a masterclass in managing the cap and fielding a good team. Lots of flexibility built in.

I don't think Aiyuk or his agents have done anything other than turning down places he could go where the team would lose and he'd end up getting cut at some point.

It feels like Aiyuk and/or his agents have overplayed their hand. You can't say "I want more $$$" and then turn down the contract the Pats offered. And then you can't also say "but I also want to play for a winning team" and then turn down the Browns, who went 11-6 last year.

Let's not forget that Aiyuk is under contract for this season and can be franchised for two seasons beyond that.

The 49ers don't have to do anything.

They can simply wait him out and see how many regular season paychecks he actually want to lose.

I hope they do that. It takes a weapon off the field and potentially poisons moral/the locker room/stirs up the media.

Word is that Niners have their best deal out and the Steelers have their best trade package/offer out.

Probably one or the other.
