good points on the low grade really high priced cards. submitters would be smart to have a min grade and if it doesnt make that grade, just go with authentic.

I have very serious suspicions about many very high grade cards. I know there were MANY call out threads years ago. many UD Ionix in high grade are known to be trimmed. the technology was so good PSA/BGS couldnt pick up on it.
Yeah I've seen all the trimming stuff with PWCC, etc. I have another theory that's pretty obviously correct too but not "proven" - PSA stops handing on 10s arbitrarily when they have too many, or too many people are submitting, or for whatever criteria they see it.

Grading really is kind of a racket. There's just way too much variance in it and they almost certainly do that ^

What does this all mean? Big picture wise. If we don’t even know if a player signed the card despite being a pack issued auto or certified

Or disagreeing with the grade….that’s certified by what is supposed to be a reputable grading company

I agree, pop control is a real thing. look at cards like the 80 rickey henderson and 75 brett. i doubt we will see many more 10's of those 2 cards.

plus, they know people will resub over and over and over to try and score that rare 10. its like free money for the grading companies.

it is a racket. i do think it is better than the wild west of the old days when you had to buy sight unseen from magazine ads

it is all about trust. and short memories. how quickly most people have forgotten (or just decided to ignore) the trimming scandal.

and all the autograph scandals

and the WIWAG scandal

and Mastro auctions

it goes on and on and on

Nothing. I know you didn't remember the whole auto discussion or did, or whatever. But that auto scandal happened right after we had it in this thread ironically - where the guy decided to not live anymore let's say. That one.

Just like everything else in the world it seems, people have goldfish memories and forget quickly. Did that whole auto scandal hurt the prices of autos? They've gone up.

Even the after-market autos which you personally dislike, they've gone up too. Even the ones we both agree are fake or probably fake, or sketchy. I've seen plenty too. They sell. And they've gone up with the rest.

Yeah that's exactly it. It's a necessary evil or overall good. It's definitely some b.s. and PSA is inching further and further towards monopoly. For sports cards, they effectively are at this point. The cards we see in BGS holsters are just legacy graded effectively, and people either don't want to pay PSA to regrade it or think they'll get a worse grade.

The numbers are staggering for what PSA grades, and they're dominant for the TCG stuff as well, but at least CGC is up there. They bought SGC and control them and BGS has had pathetic numbers for awhile. So whatever they are doing, they can do with impunity now...tying in to my response above - no one cares really. It is what it is. We came to a similar conclusion and we've talked about it - Conditional rarity, owning the card, not caring about the grade as an end all be all. It is what it is.

Giant image, but posting it for a reason.

1. I had this card in hand obviously, I owned it. It has a tiny little speck of white in the top right corner (dark blue/black colored area). No idea what to look for in terms of centering, but it looks good to me. Surface looked good.

It could easily be a 9. And if it was a 7 too, then PSA said so. Idk. Not quite sure on that one, edges were clean, corners were great for a 2000 card. Seen worse 9s.

2. I sold the card for 9.5k. eBay says 11k on sold, oddly. But it was 9500.

Spoke with Davey about it, kind of sold it mid-convo, but wanted your opinion on it. It's finalized and at the authenticator now I believe. Glad I sold it, I think it was worth it. But the market overall has gone up a lot too, other cards in this same vein jumped a lot in price.

Now I'm looking to get a few cards and limit my budget to roughly 50-60% of the proceeds. The pack autos from 2000 and these specific autos have gone up significantly from 6-12 months ago. So it's tough out here.

Now that looks like a fair after market auto

At an 8, then of course it’s easy to say with any 8 how it should be up or down a grade

Let alone .5 lol

7.5 or 8

8 or 8.5

Basically impossible to have anything definitive

It’s not like PSA comes with a detailed report, comes with absolutely nothing

An 8 of that card is like $2,500

Good for you on the sale but the after market auto adding $7,000 is just ridiculous

Why would it even add that much when lots of rookie autos are way less than $7,000?

Signed in 2000 compared to a card signed after he already had 7 rings lol

Nah, you're looking at the actual SpX /1250 card. This is a proof which is signed and inscribed obviously, every single one but that one was authentic - and they were selling for ~5-7k range depending on the inscription.

That was 6-10 months ago when I was looking and trying to buy. One was the HoF 2028 inscription too, I think 6.6k sold on auction from PSA, which had that stupid controversy about not putting "HOF" on inscriptions before getting in.

You’re right! I was looking at the wrong card

When did this one come out/serial number?

2000 threw me off

the psa 8 BC refractor sold last night as well. $45,000 BIN

i feel like that card may have gone for more had they made it an auction. feels like with it selling in a day it possibly was a little underpriced?

2000 refractors are going nuts right now. doubled at least from last year i would say

Since you already completed the base set, what in the world did you pick up?!

Don’t tell me it’s a (gasp) parallel?!

A showcase firsts /250 BGS 8.5 recently went for $7,600

Other than that the base showcase prices seem somewhat normal?

A PSA 6 went a few days ago for $1,580

A PSA 5 buy it now for $1,250

An authentic for $1,090

Another 6 for $1,313

All recently then a PSA 8 July 25th for $4,019

the one yesterday went for $5,999 bgs 8.5
one on sept 26 went for $7,999 psa8

I don't think the BGS 8.5 and PSA 8 actually sold for that. That was just the list price, OBO.

The last three sale prices of the base Showcase that I can find are

9/25 BGS 8.5 for $2,873
9/26 BGS 8 for $2,150
9/28 PSA 6 for $1,580

There's currently a BGS 8.5 listed on Fanatics as BIN for $3,399

I don’t think it’s showcase specific, every now and then I’ll see some rookies that are just super high out of nowhere for some reason. Then future sales are more “normal”

But idk what’s up with those high ones, especially with listed ones/other recent ones much lower

I mean that showcase firsts BGS 8.5 /250 for $7,600 seems about right

Meaning a regular showcase BGS 8.5 should be much less

Even that $3,399 seems high, but that’s common for a buy it now instead of an auction, more often than not anyway

From here, probably just see what the next few sales do

Hopefully a PSA 8, or 7 come up soon

that could be. usually there is a line through the BIN price on completed sales on ebay indicating the BO was accepted. I didnt see that line through either of those sales?

The BGS 8.5 ($5,999) just hit 130 Point and it says sold today for $4,500. That's a really strong sale if true, with the 8.5 sitting on Fanatics for $3,399.
