That's interesting that you shared that Penny Tribute card. I pulled that same one back when the inaugural release of SPx first came out. SPx was a unique product, both in its technology and its marketing. In 1996, $5.00 for a single card pack was virtually unheard of. But they were really cool cards, plus the possibility of an MJ Auto was a fairly new concept, so a roll of the dice for $5 a pop was tolerable... at least in moderation.

The day SPx came out, I found one shop in the area that had it. I think I bought about 10 packs. Most were pretty forgettable. But one was different. When I opened it, I realized there were two cards in there. This was way before decoy cards were invented, so my heart kind of went pitter-patter thinking of the possibilities... a single card per pack product, with MJ Autographs, and I've got a pack with two cards.....

Well it ended up being that Penny Tribute card, along with this MJ Record Breaker card. No Auto, but still a pretty unlikely pull from a single pack.

And how could you possibly be disappointed with an MJ card where he winks at you??

^ Never get a chance to pull the autograph redemption cards (and wouldn't be able to redeem them at that time anyway, as they could only be redeemed within the USA back then), but thanks for putting up the image of the pack package.

With that said, was blessed to have acquired this 2nd-hand a while ago. Many contain bubbly autographs.

The corresponding COA card and the hologram aren't shown intentionally.

Seen this before but it’s such a great example. I took a real shot in the dark buying mine since the photos weren’t the best, but the sig turned out to be bold and nearly perfect.

Love your cards, love your stories. Here are all of my Kobe rookie season cards. I got most of them in the 90s.

Wow, that's an interesting tale. Love hearing stories of freak packs like this. What you think, it was a stuff up at Upper Deck, or an intentional surprise?

Also, I don't quite understand the pack ratios with redemption's (trade card) at 1:1,294 but then Penny Auto at 1:1,345 and MJ at 1:34,560. Does this mean actual Auto's were inserted into packs? I always thought they were redemption only...

Really nice work here, I've always wanted to pick up this Auto, but every example I've spied has looked faded or bubbling on ebay pics. You did very well indeed!

Impossible to say for sure. A Hot Pack perhaps? Those used to be a thing. Never saw or heard of anything similar since.

On the auto, I read that as all autos are redemptions, with MJ's being about 1 of every 27. But they say one card per pack too, so one never knows......

They are redemption only.
The separate stated odds are for Penny and MJ redemption respectively.
